This presumably unreleased studio outtake contains an abridged version of Shotgun Blues by Lightnin' Hopkins.
It was taken from a badly damaged 78rpm metal based lacquer and was played once in order to preserve the audio.
This studio outtake contains a guitar introduction, one verse from the song, and a guitar wrap.

Dang, that's quite good sound quality from an instantaneous disc in such bad shape. Quite an amazing recording.

I like the slower version better too. That big chip on the edge is good evidence about why center start records are a better idea then records that start on the outside edge .

I was made in 1949 and released in 1950.

Do you have a source for this? The LOGICAL date would be 49, but I saw multiple sources cite 48. I also noted where it would be easy to misinterpret the date given in the Dixon, Godrich and Rye discography, however that book didn't not preclude a 1948 recording date. I would like to get it figured out : )

This disc came from legendary blues researcher Mack McCormick, who was a friend of Hopkins and (apparently) even wrote a song or two for him. After McCormick's death it made its way to me through Kurt Nauck. Due to the fact it was so badly degraded, no one seemed to want it very much. @@MarkAtnip McCormick didn't write any songs. More likely -- Lightnin' sold him ownership of the songs for hard cash, just like did with every other record company.

@@codex3048 That doesn't surprise me. There is a haze of legend that surrounds McCormick. He was an interesting character to say the least. I have seen a couple of sources that say he "might" have written material for Hopkins, but I haven't seen any songs named.

Very cool, and thanks so much for sharing and uploading! Of course I’m only guessing here, but do you think the studio sped up Lightnin’s early recordings for release? It seems like they may have, based on this. The 68bpm snippet you have here sounds much more natural, meaning, much more like Lightnin in his 60’s era rediscovery period, say at the Ash Grove, which you can hear on Wolfgang’s Vault. I’m thinking Aladdin may have sped Lightnin up because they thought a quicker tempo sounded/would have sold better. What do you think?

I don't think they did, because both recordings are in the same key/pitch. If they had sped up the recording, the pitch would have gone up as well.

How do you feel about the idea of electroplating very old lacquers as a form of preservation? I’ve never seen anyone else suggest this, but I like the concept. Of course, it’s likely a one time deal, and would likely destroy the original in the process. But it would also perfectly preserve that original cut for as long as the metal part could be preserved.

I suppose it could work, but it would be an expensive way to do things. I will query some of my archivist and record production industry friends and see what they say. Thanks for the rabbit hole : )

@@MarkAtnip interested in whatever thoughts they may have to share on that idea. I’d rather see something like that done to priceless old acetates to save them, rather than have them sit in a vault flaking off or leeching palmitic acid after 70+ years only to eventually go unplayable.

@@MarkAtnip The monetary value doesn't equate at all into this. You do whatever it takes, even if it costs $1,000+, to preserve the media. People that think this way are why these records are long gone and why irreplaceable things get lost forever. When you own rare historical things, you are also inheriting the responsibility to care for and maintain said item. It's like the redneck that had the prototype of the NASA lunar rover just rusting away in his backyard in a scrap metal pile thinking it could be chopped apart and made into a ATV.
