I have to admit that's the most info in the shortest time I've ever seen regarding mic'ing a cab. No muckin about! That room mic trick was naughty, I'll definitely remember that one!

This is a Gil Norton method - I learnt this from Sean Genockey back in 2007. I use it every time and it never fails to get a great sound.

I position the mics where i think i will get what i need (knowing your mics sound is a plus) I just record a pluck on a muted string and zoom in that tells me wich mic is behind move the mic then i flip phase lower the amps volume get my heaphones tight with a bandana and fine tune the position it's a pretty quick thing but i only use two mics

Will have to give this method a try and the distorted room mic trick = nice! Looking for plugins for auto align and ended up here. I use a few different methods, but this gives a different perspective. Thanks for sharing!

I wish I had the time in the studio to do this. Budget rarely allows for that kind of time for the projects I work on, Auto Align by Sound Radix does the job for me though. When I started multi micing guitars I can now hear the phase problems on my old projects. Very interesting and informative technique though, must definitely give it a try..

I totally know what you’re talking about, but: there are those people spending thousands of bucks for guitars, amps, cabs, pedals, strings and cables, and then on the other side of the glass us engineers can’t spend two minutes for moving one mic in relation to the other? I tend to force the band to coffee breaks for doing this noise cancellation trick, whenever I could… I typically generate the noise just by cranking up the players distortion pedal. Then I‘d boost my headphones to max, so I don’t have to touch the mic pre gain…

Great video, never saw re-amping with pink noise like that. Great 👍🏼 I like Api on guitars a lot, since recently I used the Fairchild and it’s very likable on guitars I agree 😊 At least I have the same re-amp box but have to save money for a beautiful console like that, nice 👌🏼

I have to say I can’t imagine going through all the trouble to do that rather than just making sure the capsules are all lined with one another. Overdriving the preamps on the room mic sounds fucking cool though, 100% going to try that out.

🤦‍♂️It's the quickest way to get them in phase 🤷‍♂️ A speaker isn't a flat surface, so which part of it would you "just make sure" the mics are aligned in relation to ?
@godofspacetime333
@godofspacetime333 3 ай бұрын
@@DaveyMulholland dude lining the capsules up will get your mics in phase within like a hundredth of a millisecond, you think using your ears is going to be more accurate than that? And faster?

And obviously we’re talking about the mics being perpendicular to the plane of the speaker. Getting pedantic with the topology of a speaker cone will get you no better results.

How about we put each of those three microphones on a different speaker? Each speaker may sound different but each microphone also sounds different.It's just an idea that could solve phase problems What do you think?thanks for sharing.

I feel like Its actually pretty weird trying decipher whats in or out of phase for guitar amp. You have to apply it to a mix as it’s not black n white; it’s more subjective in certain cases if phase is like wrong or out. Alignment has more subtly than just dipped / 180 degrees w Amps bc the mics are all facing the same direction and are close.

On the room mic, I didn’t get whether you compensated for the phase like you did for the 3 amp mics…if not, are you effectively creating reverb there by letting the room mic phase drift from the others?

What headphones are being used here? I've used a few pairs to try and position mics in the past but always end up going back and forth to the control room because my cans are never isolated well enough.

I use KRK KNS8400. You don’t have to go full airplane turbine level with this. I often even do this witch a rather quiet level of noise, just barely as loud as the guitar later on… the outcome will be the same, level does not matter for phase…

Does playing on one amp and then using the DI to re-record ok another amp or using the DI to re-record with more mics cause phase issues due to timing ? I haven’t used a DI before and wonder if there is a meaningful time shift overlaying DI over the same performance . Even if there is a toke shift from overlaying a DI over the same DI.

I understand everything going on her but when it comes to panning and stereo image within your daw what do you do. He has 3 mics ont his one preformnace, are they all stereo per mic and stereo panned around, are they all in mono and panned around, should you record all 3 mic sun mono and pan those all left, and then do another take and do the same to the right side
@LittleELGATO
@LittleELGATO 5 ай бұрын
Yeah so basically for a stereo image you would record these 3 mics then sum it into one track, so it becomes a mono guitar track, pan it all left then double track with another 3 mics, sum that into mono and then pan that right! So in the end you only have 2 guitar tracks with the full tone you want

@@LeeGee First, others and I have been doing variations of this for decades. Second, finding that first “sweet spot” is far more effective if one if listening to an actual guitar playing through the cab, so that the sweet spot represents a musical choice. 3rd, in the mist basic versions of this technique, one can just use the amp hiss to align consecutive/sequential mics relative to the first mic.
