This week I’m on the Amalfi Coast in Italy doing some street photography (and landscape photography) with my Lumix GX1 - a micro four thirds camera that is a decade old and cost me £50. It's a camera I love, so check out how I got on :)

"Never question what you're drawn to. Just shoot it." is still the best advice for street photography that I've ever heard. Both coming from you and The Photographic Eye. Even if other people don't end up liking it, the point is that it made _you_ think, and it got you into the process, and it got you shooting. That's what matters the most.

I enjoy watching the few seconds before each shutter click -- it's fun to see the visual shift that sparks you to capture the picture (such as the arm moving into the sun at the 5:38 mark). I'd appreciate a video where you pull a bunch of moments like this and talk about what was catching your eye. Cool video. Always fun to see budget gear doing its thing.

One of my favorite cameras of all time was one of the GX1's predecessors, the GF1. It had amazing face detection AF for the time. I took to shooting it at waist-level with the 20mm on the streets of Paris because I could trust it to grab faces that were in frame. It looked like a tourist camera, too so it wouldn't freak out Parisians. What a great package.

I’ve had a G9 for 4 years (paired with an Oly 12-40 2.8) and I adore it. Was thinking about a Ricoh or similar but already own the Lumix 20mm. I just can’t justify the mad prices on these smaller cameras lately for what’s going to be a one-a-month camera (if that)

@@MarcosCodas yeah MPB is asking $600-$700 for a gr i which is pretty expensive, I got mine for $410 on MPB because there was dust on the sensor that I cleaned, worth every penny it goes with me everywhere!

@@PlzReviveMeBro ever since I got my iPhone 11 Pro I haven’t been able to financially justify the purchase of a point-and-shoot type camera. I use the G9 for work, but for everything else, the addition of the telephoto lens on the 11 Pro and the color science have really won me over. They’re the reason I switched from Android and the only reason I’m still using an iPhone.

I don't normally like presets, but I have to say that yours suit the 'holiday in Italy' vibe 100% perfectly! I liked the phone shots from last week, but I think I would use the £52 camera and the other £1300 would pay for a holiday in Italy rather than waste it on an iPhone.

That 48MP sensor makes all the difference. I don't believe how good it is. That 2x crop of that sensor... Surprisingly good. The exposure is always spot on. I think I'll just use an ILC for telephoto stuff on trips.

James, I absolutely love your channel! It is one of the few I can binge for hours. Many channels are really good but too many are absolutely crammed with facts and tips but without personality. Your self proclaimed 'boring' videos do end up working because of a little waffling (as you say). Keep it up! I do like the new budget, gem, bargain, fun.... cheap (or whatever) 'series'. Sure, all the new fancy Z8, Z9 top of the line cameras packed with cool fancy features are alluring but seriously, what n00b or hobbyist working a normal day job can justify a $6000 - $8000 setup!? Not me but some can. Anyway, I'm waffling now so again. Keep it up! Thank you.

When I was in Amalfi in 2002, on my honeymoon, all I brought was a Canon ELPH APS film camera, and I got some lovely shots. When I returned for my first anniversary in 2003, I brought only a Sony DSC-U30 2.1 MP fixed prime lens digital camera, and again got some gorgeous shots. You do not need an expensive camera to take memorable photos. The DSC-U30 is one of my favorite cameras of all time. It was the size of a large pack of gum, had a 33mm f/2.8 equivalent lens, a 1/2.7" sensor, and could shoot an entire week (sans flash) on two NiMH AAA batteries. It even had a little convex mirror on the front sliding cover to help you frame arm's length selfies. Imagine if Sony or anyone, really, made a modern equivalent!

Was in Italy recently with a current gen Fujifilm and a LUMIX GM1 and ended up liking a lot of the LUMIX shots. I really enjoyed pairing it with the 85mm equiv f/1.7 stabilized lumix lens. Still quite small. I have the pancake you use here (1st gen one so maybe even older, got it new over a decade ago) but I do find at normal focal lengths I really prefer the Fuji. But being able to carry the GM1 with a longer lens as a second body because it's so compact was really cool.

I picked up a Canon 6D from MPB last year. It was a fantastic buy. One of the smallest and lightest full frame DLSRs. Pick up a used Canon 40mm 2.8 lens as well and you are good to go for a fraction of the cost of a new full frame mirrorless Canon kit. You'd have enough change to get to Positano and back a few times! It has a fantastic quality sensor that renders images in a more "film-like" way than most cameras, helped by the relatviely large pixels on the 20MP sensor. This may sound pretentious, and it probably is, but I think it's a great camera that was always overshadowed by the 5 series Canons.

I got a Lumix G6 (used from MPB, 150 €) and can relate, these cameras are good enough for great shots and small enough to carry with you often, without attracting too much attention. The only thing I sometimes miss is a faster and more reliable face/eye detection, but I'm not going to spend 2,500 € on that. Oh and btw, I always carry two spare batteries with me ;)

Panasonic used to make some fun cameras, the GF1 with 20mm was (& still is) great to carry in a coat pocket when out & about although these days I tend to carry a GM5 with 12-32. There has been a shortage of new models recently & secondhand prices are rising too high in my opinion as digital just are not built to last as long as the old film cameras & it is difficult to get some repaired. I really enjoyed this video, such interesting photos, the chap on the beach with the plank was in the perfect position, bet if I had waited all day in that spot he wouldn’t have appeared.

I used to have one of these, but I just didn't love it that much, eventually sold it. Years later I picked up a GX85 and it solves most of the problems I had with this one, it has a viewfinder, it has stabilisation on the sensor, and it can shoot at super fast shutter speeds so you don't necessarily need an ND filter, at least not for photos, the video's better, there's a little less noise, its a little sharper, it has faster AF and a higher hit rate, its actually great, but they still sell for a lot more than 50 pounds, but it is everything I had wanted at the time I originally bought this GX1. I just wish it had the 20mp sensor, but I like the look of the pictures so I suppose it barely matters. I do wish they had been quicker about getting the 20mp sensor into more cameras, mft used to be all 12mp, then they were pretty quick to make them all 16mp, but when the 20mp sensor came along, they got stingy about it and continued to release multiple more generations of 16mp cameras. Back when I originally had the GX1, I thought they'd have gotten to 24mp by now and stopped there, and I still wish I lived in that timeline.

A few months back, I picked up an old Olympus E-PL2 in great condition, shutter count just under 3K, for US$30. I use it with my vintage primes (28mm f2.8, 50mm f2, 58mm f2 and 135mm f2.8) and it's a blast. The only thing i'm not so keen on is the lack of a viewfinder, in the really sunny Philippine weather, but a cheap folding sunshade for the screen helps out with that. A cheap used Olympus VF1 to use on it would really make my day!

One single shot was enough to show your photografic genius, which I adore! And it demonstrates, that also an old and small sensor is capable of generating ART. Why did you not allow the other images to be more than touristic snapshots?

My first camera was a Panasonic GF1. I still have it in a box somewhere, just need to see if it still charges up:) The 20mm was one of my favourites as well!

This type of videos make me realize that I don’t need to buy the newest just go out and shoot. I’m still using my Panasonic LUMIX G85 with a Leica 25 mm F1.4 and I love the results

Brings back memories of my GX1, and it's weird 'double shutter' sound, seemingly a slight shooting delay too. I found it quite annoying, and by comparison, preferred my GF1, unfortunately sold to get the 'better' GX1. The 20mm lens is a gem though...
