Let's not forget that Stephen Hawking was also the only person to ever play himself in all of Star Trek. The universe will not be the same without him.

His life was a triumph of man through adversity, he has been an inspiration to many others. Rest in peace Professor.

The day of Pi. The day of Einstein's birth. The day of Hawking's death. A lot to think about and amazing achievements to remember and celebrate on March 14th.

Great video on a very sad day. I've started reading A Brief History of Time to my 9 year old tonight. He wanted to, I didn't think he was serious but we made it through Carl Sagon's introduction and the first few pages of the first chapter before it became far too past bedtime! I had to stop and explain various bits and bobs but he wants me to carry on! What is great in those first few paragraphs is the idea of science being a cumulative exercise, how Ptolemy built upon Aristotle and Copernicus built further. My son said maybe he can build further when he's older. I had to hold back the tears.

Like Professor Merrifield said - the fact that Professor Hawking passed away is sad, but in 1963 he was told he had but two years to live. FIFTY FIVE YEARS LATER he passed away! And what a life he had!! We are all sad to see him go, of course, but we are blessed that he was able to live those fifty five years and give us the amazing things he did. Things that we are *still* working on - and will be working on for generations to come, no doubt! R.I.P. Professor Hawking!

Nature made his body suffer a casually cruel, arbitrary and pointless death lasting decades. Implacable, undaunted, with such politeness and such flair, he made (and articulated) the vital connections between the infinitesimally small and the incomprehensible big. He gathered together the disparate, flailing strands of theoretical physics after the war, and gave the whole field a burst of creative energy. And that, in turn, gave us modernity. R.i.P.

I think the best story I read or heard about Stephen was from someone who went to an university math class with him, the prof had assigned 5 problems on a Friday to be completed for the Monday class at 11:00 AM, the student & a friend worked all weekend and only managed to complete 3 of them, they ran into Stephen Monday morning at 8:00 AM and asked how he did, Stephens reply "I haven't started yet", by start of class he had completed all 5...

You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got. And at one point you'd hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her eyes, that those photons created within her constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever. And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives. And you'll want the physicist to explain to those who loved you that they need not have faith; indeed, they should not have faith. Let them know that they can measure, that scientists have measured precisely the conservation of energy and found it accurate, verifiable and consistent across space and time. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they'll be comforted to know your energy's still around. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you're just less orderly. Amen. -Aaron Freeman.

I have so much respect to Ed Copeland and Merrifield, they boost up my love to science, especially to physics. And all this happen throughout difficult times in my personal life and when I was working in my final undergraduate thesis. So I regard both of you as my mentors some how in everything related to physics. Thanks so much to both of you.

A friend of mine today told me sometimes we think of our loved ones somewhere, up there, in heaven, looking down on us. Well, Stephen Hawking is somewhere, up there, in the greatest supper massive Black Hole in the universe. I'd like to think that he's now finally on his way of solving the greatest mystery of all: quantum gravity. He was born on Galeio's 300th anniversary of death and died on national Pi day and Albert Einstein's birthday. Makes me think the universe has a sense of humor and believes in some special magic.
