If you can afford a trolling motor with a spot lock capability that is the best way to target small pieces of structure, however there are times when you want to drift slowly over a larger area and whatever speed you drift at it is often faster than you want.
Enter the drift chute. This is a parachute like cone that you can deploy behind the boat to catch the water and slow your drift down. They work in the same manner as a parachute catches the air to slow the descent of its load.
Unfortunately, the cheap drift chutes are not much better than nothing if you are working offshore in a reasonable sized boat.
Then I found this chute. Compared to the cheap chutes, this one is enormous. I got the 9ft chute (nearly 3m) for my size boat. I was tempted to get the next size up at 12ft (nearly 4m) but I didn’t want to overdo it in larger seas. Too much chute with swell coming in from the stern can make things difficult so I stuck with the recommended size.
It comes complete with ropes and a float for the retrieval rope, just purchase and deploy.
I bought mine from Blue Bottle Marine. Just go onto their website at www.bluebottlemarine.com and search for “Sea Drift Anchor”.
