Wondering how to remember all your dreams on those nights when you have a ton? What's the best way to dream journal when you have a crazy amount of dreams?
In today's video I suggest a different approach that might enable you to remember more dreams when it feels like there's too many to even write down. This might not be the best way to remember your dreams on nights where you only have two or three dreams to recall, but it may be a more effective dream journaling technique for especially busy nights packed full of dreams.

Instead of the single-sentence approach, i prefer keywords. They can also be organized afterward.

After the first couple of times I ran into this problem, I made a deal with my subconscious, that dream journaling is important and affirms my commitment, but time is often limited -- so recalling/recording just the two or three most important/most interesting dreams is good enough (or even one dream, if time is tight), since after all anything I really _need_ to consider more closely, that might get missed, is sure to come up again in the next few nights. I find it's more important to seriously consider what I've recorded, than to try record absolutely everything. And if I spend all my time just writing down "things", I may no longer have time and energy for actually thinking about it.

My handwriting is terrible, so I avoided journaling for a long time. Eventually I started a.txt file on my computer, and would type out my stream of conscience(with time stamp). I noticed recall got better, and had my first lucid experience roughly 2.5-3 months later. But since I work early in the morning, I usually have to spend effort through the day repeating my dream to myself so I can write when I get home. For a while, I used a dictation app on my phone, so I could turn it on (screen facing away to avoid light contamination), and I would just talk about the dream. I found that really helped me, and listening to the playback triggered more recall. I stopped using it over a year ago when I gave things a break, but now that im journaling again and getting lucid, I think a dictation app can really help “get the info out of your head before it’s gone”.

Big fan of both of these. I used to do voice recording, but I use journaling chiefly for record keeping rather than recall, so I typically retain dream memories and then journal them in a word doc on my computer for convenience. I keep pretty long term records as a result. I switched from voice recordings to word docs in November of last year, and have been maintaining records ever since on my laptop. I also keep an Excel spreadsheet of all my lucid dreams and associated metadata, dating back to when I started practicing in October of 2020. Dream recall is foundational and extremely important for lucid dreaming. I hope it's working well for you.

I have a voice recorder and use it when I wake up after the dream or later if I remember something,,,that way I get as much information as possible.

Does anyone else go straight into sleep paralysis whenever you die in a dream or lucid dream? I use this to my advantage by using that sleep paralysis to easily start a brand new lucid dream

For me dying in a dream usually wakes me up, but I found that the easiest way for me to get into sleep paralysis is definitely from within a lucid dream, by telling myself to not move at all when I wake up, and then waking myself up and waiting for a few seconds - then I'll be in sleep paralysis.

@@Tipharot hmmm interesting, 90% of my sleep paralysis are because of dying in a dream or my dream collapsing. Before I had sp i was completely scared of it but now I look forward to it because of its benefits for lucid dreaming

Im a pretty fast typer and already do this approach more or less, but audio recording is interesting. I usually find that talking wakes me up too quickly and its harder to coherently speak vs type and edit

Yo mat I wanted to ask somthing. I LD a ton but it seems like you don't need to be in REM to dream. For example when I do wild I can wake up whenever and get a very long dream, upwards of an hour. But at a young adult that goes to church I tend to get very sleepy and just yesterday I got into an LD at church. I woke up tho because someone woke me up. But that got me thinking if it's possible to LD out of REM sleep.

One thing to note is that if you're sleep deprived, you'll often enter into REM almost immediately the second you fall asleep the same way you would if you'd woken up in REM previously. So if you're regularly not getting enough sleep what you're experiencing is pretty normal but you're likely still in REM for almost all of those dreams.

@Tipharot I do agree with you on the times that I do wild in the middle of the night. I get around 8 to 9 hours of sleep a day also so I think sleep deprivation is ruled out unless my sleep quality is absolutely terrible. But I've noticed when I'm bored and have nothing to do I get sleepy and in the sleepiness is where I can LD right as I fall asleep. In not sure if that answers anything though and who knows there might be some other factors involved that I dont know about.

@@TimTkachev Morning naps from what I know tend to have more REM sleep than say, early night sleep, so a decent shot that you'd enter REM there. Also, yes, you can actually have lucid NREM dreams. They exist. They aren't terribly common though as NREM dreams tend to be more difficult to recall than REM sleep dreams, and less vivid and detailed overall from my understanding of them.

I used to write my dreams more, now I don't do it very often. but I want to do this again. there was this dream once I just remember like a short sentence so when I read is like 2 or so lines of text :p normally I just write as quick as possible anything I remember so I don't forget without any order so then I start rearranging the parts later if I remember some are out of order also, does it help with lucid dreams if you read old dreams?

also speaking about lucid dreams I remember these 2 times. first dream I remembered there was this series on history channel called "stanlee super humans" (however is said in english) and one of the episodes there was this guy that could exit and re enter the same dream and such. so when I was lucid dreaming I remembered of this episode and tried to do the same. and bam! I exited the dream and couldn't go back lol the second one I remembered there was this short wall that was all destroyed and then I noticed I was dreaming and said myself, hey i can rebuild this wall like magic so i lifted my hand like casting telekinesis and the wall was fixed

I dont use screens with blue light during the night I wait till I get up in the morning to wright them on my pc dream journal, I sort the dreams out by the date I have them witch would be the next morning, I dont wright down the boring dreams witch I have most of the time, I only keep track of the ones I actually care about, witch is rare unfortunately for me.

Hey Matt I was wondering normally when I have sleep paralysis i instantly want to wake up but I’ve watched some videos on how to get a lucid dream with sleep paralysis is imagining walking up some stairs while in sleep paralysis a good way to get into a lucid dream ? p.s still haven’t had my first lucid dream 😭 hope that makes sense 😃

You really don't need sleep paralysis to lucid dream. This is a pretty common misconception. You can practice techniques like WILD without ever entering sleep paralysis, the main thing is just to ensure you're in REM. @@Tipharot One thing I'd love to see addressed more is consistency. I started recently, within the past couple weeks, comparing people's conceptions of lucid dreaming practices to the reality of lucid dreaming practices by comparing a recipe to a skill. A lot of people that end up on other platforms downstream of KZfaq do things like switch techniques often, or are frustrated with a lack of success after less than a few days of trying, and this is because they have this approach of follow these steps, get lucid quickly. I contrast this a lot with skill training, sports, or playing a musical instrument, where one learns through consistent practice to improve their abilities over time, and that is a big part of lucid dreaming itself as a skill. It's one of those things that a lot of beginners unfortunately miss when they try and learn about lucid dreaming. Looking forward to listening to the upcoming vid on Friday.

Nobody talks about how great it is to have no memory of a dream or nightmare during a sleep. Instead, everyone on KZfaq is busy voicing their opinions as to why not and their personal take on how to fix "the problem." Who are you guys to say we need fixing. From what I am experiencing, having the ability to sleep peacefully, and undisturbed is a far greater spiritual awakening. My mind is an absolute machine throughout the day and at peace throughout the night.
