Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Did you know that the largest Powerball jackpot ever won was a mind-blowing 2.04 billion dollars? That's the equivalent of an average American working for 30,000 years. Sounds good, but there's a dark side dating back to the Old Testament. From funding America's birth to winners finding a tragic fate, get ready to explore the shadowy past of the lottery.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

I won $5000 in a scratcher at the age of 8 years old bc I seen a pretty paper stuck on the fence. After reading the instructions of this paper game I seen it was a winning ticket. Took it to my father and boy was he happy! He took me school clothes shopping, to wet and wild and just spoiled me lolol

I’m glad that you were spoiled with the money, that’s super cute. Some parents would not have done that so I’m glad out of any 8 year old to find a winning ticket it was an 8 year old with loving parents who didn’t have to use it all to pay bills off slot anything either

I used to work at a gas station and there was this guy who would come in a few times a day and get scratchers. He played a lot! He ended up winning a million dollars and came back and gifted everyone that worked in the store $400 each! It was so nice of him and we were all really greatful! I still see him around town! I won 20 grand on a scratcher 8 years ago. It was a blessing for me. 25% taxed straight away, but can claim it the next year. Some of it. The first thing I spent it on was donated to a cause. The earthquake in Nepal happened that year and they needed help badly. Maybe that is the way to release any "curse " winning big. Never forget the humble beginning.

My friends mom won 43 million in the lottery. It was such a surreal year after. From news stations camped out in front of your house to people coming out of the woodwork looking for money to buying new houses and cars. Eating like Queens and Kings in any restaurant we wanted. The mom amd dad went to every Superbowl the Patriots were in and some 27 years later still living the high life.

@@solene2014I think she was talking about the original commenter’s friend’s mom who won the lottery. I do believe in the past Bailey has donated to specific causes and even urged us into action about certain true crime cases. She may do some of her own donations and whatnot privately too but idk. But the comment you responded do was just kind of insinuating that lottery winners are bad people if they don’t make some crazy donation. But I think we need to hold corporate billionaires to that standard more than private citizens who got luck.

Unfortunately in Florida for that guy Shakespeare who won, everything is public record, (it's why slow news days always go through Florida arrests to find the next Florida Man because all those arrest cases are available to the public). The Sunshine Law makes lottery winners vulnerable. I feel like in the case of lottery winners, they should be able to choose whether or not they go public.

My dad had an acquaintance in the 90's that won somewhere around $10million in the lottery. He got a lump sum of about 55%. Everyone came out of the wood works. Those long lost cousins he never knew of, that now wanted him to fund their business ideas. Family and friends expecting him to fund college for their kids, vacations, dinners out, etc. New homes, renovations, lavish gifts. Within 3 years he was flat broke. The cherry ontop was all those people who felt entitled to his money disappeared shortly after the money was gone. My dad got an update on his a few years after the money was gone and it was that he wished he never won the lottery. He felt totally alone and used. He felt like he was in a no won situation. If he didn't give money to anyone, they would hate him. He spent it all foolishly on them, and they ended up hating him anyways. Very sad situation.

What îs odd? That the woman wanted to enjoy the money she worked and saved all her life? As long as it was her earned money, she owed nothing to anyone. Especially close to death, I believe that the wisest thing to do is to make your last days more beautiful. The woman didn't steal from anyone, it was her money and she had every right to use it however she wanted. If somebody wants money should work for it, not wait for the inheritance.

I don't play the lottery. I watched my dad play it for years and never won a thing. The amount if money he spent on the lottery, he could have been a millionaire from the money he spent. Love your Dark History videos.

Bailey, Plum Island! It’s right up your alley. It was a research facility here in the U.S. where they were testing diseases on animals. Some of the animals escaped and shortly after, an entire town next door came down with the known cases of Lyme disease. That’s right, the U.S. made Lyme disease, go us!

Unfortunately here in Georgia you are required to publicly announce. I think that's crazy and I don't understand the reason for such a thing. You should be able to claim your winnings without all the publicity. 😮

My guess is once the lottery started being set up by private companies instead of the government, the extra money that didn’t go to the winner(s) went to the CEO and other employees. It’s paycheck money instead of community improvement money now.
