At the end of her summer visit at Noras (the grandmas) house, Mimi (the girl) almost drowned in the river due to a storm, so her father (who already had a challenging relationship with his mother/the grandma) took her away and never let her visit again, despite the beautiful relationship Mimi and Nora built during that summer and how happy they were together. Mimi also lost her memories after almost drowning, which explains why she didn't know exactly what drew her back to her grandmas place after she died. Her memories about her grandma and her friend Renaud return gradually throughout the game, and this is basically the big reveal that they never saw each other again afterwards.
