Early in the 2nd decade of the 20th century, an event was staged by former champion Tommy Burns. It was to determine the "White Heavyweight Champion" who was expected to challenge champion Jack Johnson for the title.
What took place remains a legend in Canadian ... and all of North American ... sports history.

Wow, that is some story, with its twists and ironies. Jack Johnson credited Burns for offering Johnson a title shot, even if Burns received $30 000 and Johnson $5000. But this incident in Calgary is something I had never heard, and I can understand why any boxing fans would want to forget such a tragic event. Thanks for bringing it out, ET. 🙏💎

You didn't mention that it was actually the 1st ever title defense of the new White Heavyweight Championship. Started that belt off with a cursed fight.

Good point. I also forgot to mention that McCarty's mother was native American..
