Theres to many forces at work that controled Dempsy vs Will's not fighting. Alot of ignorant people claim that this is another black mark on Dempseys career. Dempsey could fight any style he wanted & no oppenets at 10 round s could do anything about it., except for Gene Tunney , who undoubtedly was fortunate to escape the long count. Denpsey had tremondous chin & heart i dont think Dempsey was afraid or not confident if he had to , to fight Harry. Wills . The fight might have gone either way , but Dempsey had no weakness , except him being little past his prime.

Jose Urtain heavyweight champ of Europe in the late sixties and early seventies was a champion stone lifter in his native Spain before becoming a boxer. He was a good puncher but was easily outclassed by Henry Cooper and others. Maybe with an American trainer and better sparring he could have gone further. In physique he greatly resembled Rocky Marciano but not in the ring.

There was a story of how Muhammad Ali was looking for a European opponent and went to Spain to watch Urtain fight, Urtain scored a knockout and Ali went into the ring and started being Ali, making a racket, challenging Urtain to a fight, etc. Urtain supposedly grabbed Ali and military pressed him over his head. The fight never happened.

Carnera was also in the romp Mighty Joe Young! by the time Willard lost to Dempsey he was way past prime and enjoyed the good life too much and read too many newspapers telling him how unbeatable he was. Baer was incredibly fast as well as naturally strong, but was a tragic clown never meant for the fight "game".

Cus said you couldn’t hit the man however if he was punchdrunk, then that means he got hit hard and often or a little bit throughout his entire career it’s probably the latter because he fought 300 times. If these guys were fighting in today’s day and age, they would be rich because if you fight 300 times in boxing and you make 5 million per fight then that’s like $1.5 billion that’s more than what Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson made. It makes sense to me. The audience doesn’t really think about the greatest fighter of all time being the guy who doesn’t throw punches he just can make people miss all of their punches, and that’s not exciting. Nobody came to see one guy, throw punches, and the other guy just tried to evade the punches the whole time for 15 rounds or 100 rounds or whatever they used to fight . But that’s what he did so that’s why they took away his belt? I mean if he doesn’t get hit he doesn’t Luz right? That’s what Cus always said if you don’t get hit, you don’t lose it, but it’s not as simple as that you have to exciting and hit with bad intentions. Cuss was talking about breaking ribs, and stuff like that.

JERRY QUARY WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOXERS DURING THE 60S AND 70S ERA. HE WAS A WELL-SCHOOLED AND TALENTED BOXER. UNFORTUNATLEY, HE MADE SOME COSTLY PUGILISTIC MISTAKES IN THE RING AND HE WASN'T ALWAYS IN THE BEST OF SHAPE FOR SOME OF HIS MATCHES. NONETHELESS, HE DID MAKE HIS PRESENCE IN PROFESSIONAL BOXING BOTH MEMORABLE AND EXCITING. THANK YOU FOR THIS INTERESTING WALK DOWN THE PUGILISTIC "MEMORY LANE".

Sam would surely have beaten Tommy; but even if Tommy had won the fight and earned another crack at Johnson, there's not a chance in hell that Burns would have been the victor! Not a chance! Tommy would have lost to Jeffries and Fitzsimmons also imo.

Totally wrong. Liston did not enter the top ten until THREE YEARS after Marciano retired. At the time of Marciano's retirement Liston had a little more than a dozen pro fights and had just got whipped by former middleweight Marty Marshall. I doubt Marciano ever heard of Liston at the time of his retirement.

There are several reasons to suspect something, but no 100% reliable account has come up yet to prove Dempsey's gloves were "loaded".
@rokmin8550
@rokmin8550 21 күн бұрын
with all due respect, fighters with "loaded" gloves are as old as the hills and still persist today. Willard indeed may have been very strong (as was Primo Carnero and we saw what Louis did to him) but that doesn't always translate to a big punch. Personally I think a prime George Foreman would have put Willard away in the first round.

Ketchel made a deal with Heavyweight champ Jack Johnson to just fight an exhibition but Ketchel tried to knock Johnson out knocked Johnson down Johnson got up and hit Ketchel so hard it knocked Ketchel out cold and Ketchels front teeth stuck in Johnsons glove...Ketchel killed by a jealous husband 😮
@ET-RAMBLINGS
@ET-RAMBLINGS 17 күн бұрын
The fight was legitimate in that the title was on the line, but Johnson & Ketchel did have an "understanding" that it wouldn't get too rough. Ketchel was friends with Johnson, but his impulsive behavior (in and out of the ring) got the best of him, and Johnson (as you point out) made him pay dearly for it.

Good point, John! Willard was very durable, and Dempsey would have had trouble maintaining that pace had the fight gone on for many rounds. On the other hand, Willard was already severely damaged, and more beating could have proved fatal if the fight continued.

Hi ET, this is Chris LaForce. Thanks for sharing this emotional tale from Ketchel's early years. I read about it long ago in Fleischer's book, but your version nearly had me in tears. I want to add that one story Nat (and Mr. Mora) told about Stanley is evidently NOT true. This was the supposed exhibition between Ketchel (then called "Kid" Ketchell) and Tommy Ryan in Butte, Montana in 1906. Ryan was also briefly in Montana in 1903. While working on my upcoming biography of Tommy Ryan, I pored through every page of every Butte and nearby paper from that time, and found no account of a Ryan-Ketchel match. It was actually scheduled at one time in early 1906, however. I love your channel, keep it going!

Thanks, Chris! And, thanks for the info regarding "Kid" Ketchell and Tommy Ryan. Your own book, the Choynski Chronicles, covers the turn of the 20th century boxing scene, and employ a very rare combination of encyclopedic level information wrapped up in understandable (and exciting) prose. Please let me and viewers of this channel know when that Ryan book appears!!

It had been said by Willard, that Dempsey had an iron bolt in one of his gloved fists that broke many bones in Willard's face. It could be true given Doc Kearns, Dempsey's manager was not a man to be trusted and could have been behind this.

Dempsey lost the title in 1926, not the following year. As for the headline, "Willard could have killed Jack Dempsey!", it seems to me that barring the introduction of firearms, Jess would have had a hard time living up to that billing.

No plaster of Paris on Dempsey's fists, just tape, hard knuckles, and a "tiger's" instinct for battle! That story was really noticed the first time coming from an embittered ex-manager, Doc Kearns. Doc was a great trainer/manager of fighters.After Dempsey and Kearns split up their manager/boxer contract, Kearns would sue Dempsey numerous times out of our spite and hard feelings. He wrote his autobiography long after he retired. He stated that Dempsey had plaster of Paris on his fist that was put on right prior to the Willard fight. Williard's manager was present at Dempsey's taping of his hands, as one of Dempsey's reps was present when Willard had his hands taped. Jack did not have to cheat to win. Kearns would cheat, but not Jack. Kearns story had no witnesses, other than himself, and no one mentioned this until years after the fact. Just a leisurely investigation can turned the Kearns plaster of Paris accusation.

A 'lion's instinct would be more accurate, as tigers don' t naturally like battles and try and avoid them if they can. Male lions on the other hand fight on a regular basis, fighting being their primary role, their bodies are 'engineered' by nature for this.

What on earth was Ingo doing eating @ a restaurant so soon before the fight? He may have eaten something which "disagreed" with him : this may have been due to some dirt in the kitchen or some ingested herb Ingo reacted with: I suspect it is all conjecture, BUT his pre-fight preparation seems to have been too relaxed, to put it mildly...compared with [say] Usyk. Anyhow Ingo, you are remembered with affection: RIP amigo.
