I’d love a non-fiction vlog! I spent 2023 reading science fiction/fantasy and am aiming to widen my horizons this year. Wild sounds so good that I’ve just bought it as an ebook. My latest Waterstones purchase was “Where are the Women? A guide to an imagined Scotland” which focuses on women’s contribution, past and present. It’s written by Sara Sheridan and published by Historic Environment Scotland.

Loved Idol, Burning. Gave me insight into a world I know nothing about, 'Oshi's". I, too, love a short read. Those are often the ones which stay with me in my thoughts.

Non- fiction vlogs sound like a brilliant idea, don't think I have seen any before!. And your first anthology might be the February book club pick for the Literally Dead Book Club hosted by booksandlala. It was a horror anthology and the cover looks familiar, couldn't find the announcement, though.

I just read Never Whistle at Night and it was excellent. There were a few I didn't love (which is expected in an anthology) but so many of them were so spooky and well-written.

I have read some of out there screaming and it’s awesome! I want to get a copy of Wild, but I’m also searching for Chinese and Japanese lore retellings in English because I know so much about the more ‘popular’ mythologies in English.

Definitly! I plotted it out and wrote a quarter of it but then I signed a deal for another historical (fantasy) novel and had to focus on that. I’m editing it atm and as soon as I’m done it’s back to the highlander romance (I cannot research two time periods at one I’ve learned aha). Thank you for asking!!!

Jean, I'm only 2 minutes in and I'm already writing a comment because you said 1/2 price sale!!! WHAT?! I wouldn't know what to do, where to look lol XD Books are very expensive here in NZ, and we never get huge sales 😞 Secondly, I also love horror and am not into gratuitously gory stuff. Love old school mostly, like M. R. James, Algernon Blackwood, etc, J-horror movies, and Jordan Peele and Guillermo del Toro are my favourite directors. 🙂Amazing just how scary something can be with no/minimal 'gross-ness'. I count on Libby to experiment with books and authors nowdays, and am very fussy with my purchases, but I did recently buy the gorgeous and lovely Manga, 'Witch Hat Atelier', and pre-ordered 'Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands' and 'Sunbringer', the sequel to the superb 'Godkiller' and I'm very excited to read these 🙂 📚📚📚

I am also in NZ, and can concur. Was shocked how affordable books are when I was visiting the UK. I want to support book stores but find $30-40 paperback book too expensive given the volume I read. Thank goodness for the Libby App!

@@karenmiddlebrook5069 Hello there! Yes, some Manga can be cheaper with us being closer to Japan, but yeah novels etc are crazy prices. Yesterday I bought Rouge by Mona Awad with a book voucher, and that was $39 for a paperback. I love my physical books, and would love to go to a Barnes & Noble hardback sale in the US. So cheap! Libby has been amazing, and I can get through a book really fast on 2x speed just as I go about my day 👏👌📚

This is wild. Is it a general cost of living/wages are higher? Or is it perhaps tax? In the UK at least we don't pay tax on books.
@ladyfox6705

@@JeansThoughts Cost of living in NZ is very high. Food costs a LOT, and we definitely pay tax on books 😞 I think also that items are generally expensive because so many things need to be imported, and we are a very long way from other places down here at the bottom of the world. That's why I (and many of us bookworms) were very sad when the Book Depository UK closed down, and went NUTS buying up books because BD was tax and free international freight. I think I bought over 20 books, some are also very difficult to get here (or you just can't get here at all.) Lovely country in many ways, but expensive, yes 😢

Also lack of bookstore "vibes". My hometown in the UK has one of the most beautiful Waterstones, with a lovely Cafe overlooking the store. Sofas, and coffee etc.

I’m not into the romance books, but the blurbs sound a lot like Mills & Boons from back in the day! Do they still make them?? 😂 I miss our old The Works. It used to have a couple of floors of books, then they moved across the road into another building and now they only have one wall of books (by authors I’ve never heard of) the rest of the shop is crafts and games. Quite sad for me!
@JeansThoughts

Aha I love Mills and Boons, they're still going strong, although thankfully with improving diversity of stories and characters. I will say I did my Works order on line, they definitely didn't have all of these in my local store :(

@@JeansThoughts Weirdly, when I was a little girl. I knew 2 Mills & Boons authors. My friend who lived across the street from me (we lived in military quarters, she lived in a thatched cottage surrounded by fields and oak trees) her mother and grandmother were both writing for M&B. I wasn’t really aware of what it was back then, but we’re talking the 70’s and they were well known. They both used pseudonyms of course. Which is a shame as ld like to check out what they were writing all those years ago! I used to see (and hear them!) using their typewriters in their office. To this day hearing a typewriter reminds me of their home 😁

Aha I mean disagreeing with the capitalist system does not mean we don’t live in one or that individuals must give up small purchases. It’s about larger change like campaigning for public ownership. At least to me 😊
