Currently using a hoop frame, but planning to get a slate frame for a project I have in mind

I find hoop frames to be useful for travel purposes, as one can fit in my purse. I like the slate frame for special projects, such as something to be judged at an Arts & Sciences faire.

Rarely use a frame but now need to use a slate frame for a special project. Have watched three of your presentations now and they are wonderful. Are tressles still available for purchase and if so where?

Thanks! I don't know about tressles, but I would suggest looking for an embroidery stand to hold up your frame. An example of an embroidery frame can be found at Michael's at www.michaels.com/adjustable-craft-stand-by-loops-and-threads/10232941.html?r=g

@@LynneFairchild thank you for the reply. I was hoping to go 'the more traditional' way and to search for tressles to use with the slate frame. I own (but have never used) the Needlework System 4 floor stand with the frame clamp. Absolutely the rave of those who use stands and so will go with that. At last it will be put to good use. By the way, it can be used for slate frames if the mortises and tenons are flat and not rounded.

There are still trestle stands available. Our company based in the US makes both custom trestle stands and slate frames. We have a website at TFWoodcraft.com and an Etsy store under the same name.

The candle and window lighting pictures are showing tracing the pattern onto the cloth, not embroidery. both women are holding quill pens, which used to have most or all of the feathering removed.

You are correct. The scene shows women making patterns at their respective stations prior to embroidering the fabric.

I don't understand why a scroll frame would not hold the ground fabric as tautly a slate frame--the rollers hold the fabric tautly in the vertical, & lacing the fabric to the stretchers provides the horizontal tautness?

In my experience, the slate frame provides tension from all 4 sides of the frame because of its stability. However, the scroll frame lacked tension with the roller bars, regardless of how tight I tried to tighten them. For me, it's an issue of keeping the roller bars (and the fabric rolled on to it) stationary. It's more difficult to do counted embroidery stitches on loose fabric.
