For anyone who couldn't figure it out, he meows because he was in "Cats" on Broadway at the time.

Sadly, Charles William McGowan passed due to complications during kidney surgery 9/5/2013. The 2014 Tony Awards program listed him in tribute on its In Memoriam page.

Makes me sad. He was such an amazing dancer and so cute too. Probably the best male dancer in the movie. RIP Charlie. I'm sure you inspired a lot of little boys, and girls, to dance.

He was a patient of mine for about 6 months before the surgery. Everyone loved him. He even mentored the guy in the room next to him as he was going through the same things Charlie had once experienced. We were all upset when we found out he passed away and they left his room empty for a few months afterwards. He was just a great human being. Whenever "Beat It" comes on the radio I say "Hi Charlie " because he was in the video.

This was the high point of the movie. All that moaning and barking and crying, the tiresome Cassie soap opera, and suddenly there's two minutes of actual musical theater. Very sorry to hear he died -- and so strangely?

Notice that his shoes are silent until about 1.28, at which point they suddenly become tap shoes.
@goawayleavemealone2880
@goawayleavemealone2880 Жыл бұрын
That's not unusual, watch any version of one of stage productions or even a video of "Anything Goes" which is a very tap heavy number and you'll see that it's very possible to walk and dance around in tap shoes without actually tapping.

such a shame...the show on stage was genius...the movie just didn't capture that broadway magic like the movie of Chicago did.

Most Broadway shows to movies are like that live shows are better Annie is a good example stage took place during Christmas time movie 4th of July and they added a character in the movie where he didn't exist on stage took out about 2 songs

To me it's perfect. Singing in musicals is non diegetic, meaning inside the actual world of the play he's not singing but simply talking and expressing emotions. So here it's like he's just still talking, the transition doesn't need to be all winded and built up because it's not a break from the scene, it's happening inside it.

I loved musicals when I was a teenager, both theatrical and in films and this film was one of my top favourite. Back in 80s I sang in several amateur chorus groups and did some musicals myself too. I used to watch this film repeatedly and didn’t feel any problem ...I liked the way the song started w/o instrumental intro, it would have been more conventional and concert-like w an intro.

Nope. Nope. Didn't link to this version. I understand bailing before cutting to the backstage action, but the end has to be the most insensitive transition since (just for lack of another handy example) Trump's inauguration speech. ;-)
