Fun fact: with UCLA having played at the Coliseum until 1981, and USC having won a shitload of Rose Bowls, both teams have a winning record in the other's stadium.

As a Utah fan, I have no idea how I went down the KZfaq rabbit hole enough to be watching this. But I will say while we have had difficult losses to both teams over the years and good wins over both teams over the years, I have always had tons of respect for the UCLA team and fans. The UCLA fans show a lot of class. When the UCLA fans got off the bus and the first thing they did was put flowers on the 22-yard line to honor our murdered players it left many of us in tears as a reminder that our humanity and brotherhood off the field is more important than the moments of rivalry on the field. UCLA fans aren't so entitled that they expect that due to the name and tradition of their school and their ability to write big checks that means they are somehow owed conference championships and national championships. UCLA fans don't expect coaches to do the impossible and come in and turn around an average team into a national championship team in one or two years. On the other hand, a certain contingent of USC fans are just nasty, spoiled, entitled, arrogant brats. I feel bad for any coaches stupid enough to take the check and prestige USC dangles in front of them because even if you take an average team and manage to go to the PAC-12 Championship and only lose two games in the season - both to Utah, one time only by 1 point, and you managed to stay in the Football Playoff conversation until the very end of the season, you will still have some very vocal fans already calling for your head. USC fans have zero patience and zero understanding that building something real takes time. If we at Utah had fired Whittingham before he had a chance to build his program we would never have had any success. If football is only about tradition and money, why even play the games? Why don't we just start a bidding war for the national championship trophy and let the team that is willing to pay the most for it have the trophy? The only reason most people enjoy college football so much is precisely because you can't buy the national championship or be given the trophy today simply because you were the best 50 years ago or 150 years ago. Sure, for some reason money and a programs success from prior years does give certain programs a significant unfair advantage, but even with that unfair advantage at the end of the day every program still has to prove it where it counts - on the field. Some teams have the name and the money, and some teams have an incredible ability to build something with very little prestige and almost no money. I will always find the latter more impressive. And even if your players really are dominate, what have the fans themselves actually accomplished that makes them think they have earned the right to not treat other fans as human beings when we are not actually in competition? It may come as a shock to them, but there are things that are way more important than football, and there are times when it is more important for us to come together as fellow human beings. I'm sure there are plenty of USC fans that think this is just sour grapes from a jealous Utah fan, and I'm sure nothing I say will change their minds. But this year we actually lost to UCLA, and we beat USC both times, so the team this year that should bother me more is UCLA. Also, I know USC is leaving the PAC-12, but in theory so is UCLA. With USC, my feeling is the way they are doing it is rewarding their nasty, selfish behavior, so in general I hate that bad behavior is being rewarded, but on the other hand I know I am with a bunch of PAC-12 fans who are saying, "Good riddance. I hope the door (doesn't) hit you on the way out." Getting rid of USC is honestly probably worth the loss of money and recruitment opportunities they gave to the conference. With UCLA I have the exact opposite reaction. I believe they have earned some good fortune and deserve it. Whether or not it will prove to be good fortune after taking into account the travel, etc. remains to be seen, but if it does prove to be a good move for them I wish them luck. I would absolutely love to see UCLA dominate the Big 10 in as many sports as possible in the near future - especially football and men's basketball since I actually watch those. But UCLA will genuinely be missed. Yes, both USC and UCLA leaving are destabilizing the conference, and as a Utah fan I have enjoyed being in a stable PAC-12 for a few years. I am definitely sad about UCLA contributing to that destabilization, but I also can't fault them for making the move that they think will be an amazing opportunity for their program. I admit, I kind of am hoping the Cal Board of Regents votes to block the move because that is absolutely the best outcome for Utah, and as much as I respect UCLA my first loyalty will always be what's best for my Utes. I'm also not completely convinced a move to the Big 10 is the dream those making the decisions think it will be. Sure, at first there will be more money, but sometimes sacrifices a program makes for more money today can result in less money in the future after taking into account the travel not only for the players but also for the fans and also taking into account that there is a certain power that comes from being a big fish in a small pond that you lose becoming a small fish in a big pond. I'm not convinced the Big 10 is really that much bigger of a pond in terms of competition than the PAC-12, but in terms of prestige and teams that have prestige it is certainly different. UCLA will probably not have as big of an adjustment because they haven't been trading on their prestige in the PAC-12 as much as USC has, but USC could be in for a real shock. USC has enough power in the PAC-12 to make sure they never have to schedule any games that are likely to be in the snow. They won't have that power in the Big 10. USC stole many of the best players and assistant coaches from other teams in the PAC-12 using their superior brand recognition and superior budget knowing those players will not be making a huge adjustment because they will still be playing in most of the same venues. However, in the Big 10 suddenly they might be on the other end of that trend when The Ohio State is using its superior budget and superior national recognition and storied tradition to steal all of USC's best players. That may not sound like a big deal now, but if it continues for enough years that USC starts having regular losing seasons their program may lose a huge amount of its prestige and marketability, and next time it comes to negotiating with a conference they may not be in as strong of a position and that decision to take money today could theoretically result in less bargaining power and thus less money in the future. Sure, it's probably unlikely something that extreme would happen, but it's also certainly not unprecedented. Like I said, I think this is a bigger problem for USC than UCLA. This is because USC's strategy is to build its success on being the big fish in the pond, and that strategy doesn't work when you aren't the big fish anymore. UCLA has clearly built other strategies beyond just trading on their name recognition and budget, so they have practice making alternative strategies for success work for them. Anyway, I doubt anyone will ever read any of what I just wrote. I mainly wrote it to get it out of my system. But if any UCLA fans do read this, know that I'm pretty sure most of the conference has a ton of respect for your fans and your program, and although we will miss you we wish you the absolute best in your new conference once you get there. It does hurt the rest of the conference that you are leaving, but I think most of us understand that while we hate it you have to do what is right for your program and seize the opportunities when they come. What you have built has a lot more substance than the USC program and has impacts both on and off the field. USC has a lot of flash, but at least for now that substance is really missing. Any program should be able to do well with a big budget and name recognition, especially when you are able to poach everyone else's hard work. Even if it succeeds, that strategy will never be impressive or earn my respect. It's the programs that are able to take the 2 star recruits and teach them discipline and skills and transform them into 4 or 5 star players, and that more importantly teach all of the players to be good citizens OFF the field that are actually creating anything of value, and at least right now UCLA seems to be doing a really good job of that. There are very few rivalries that I as an outsider to the rivalry can say one school/team/fanbase clearly and consistently outclasses the other side of the rivalry, but in the UCLA/USC rivalry I think there is a very clear winner, and it is UCLA. Sure, I know some people will say when it comes to a football rivalry all that matters in the end score. Although what happens off the field really is more important, the score does matter. I have no idea from personal knowledge how both teams looked decades ago, but I can say for all of the hype that always seems to surround USC even when on the field they are putting out a subpar product, in our years in the PAC-12 I can also solidly say I haven't noticed that USC has significantly outclassed UCLA on the field, either. Sure, there are some seasons/games where one team has clearly been better than another, but overall both teams have had up years and down years, and both teams have had years where they have caused us Ute fans a lot of anxiety. So while I'm sure those who are blinded by USC's flash will disagree, from my perspective UCLA is an equal competitor on the field, but both on and off the field their sportsmanship and class completely eclipses USC.

An astute commentary on The Cross Town Rivalry. My father played at Stanford, my older brother played at USC, I played at UCLA. My brother and I are retired College and High School Football Coaches in our eighties. Of course the annual shoot out is big in our respective families. While we kid each other and have bragging rights for one year, we both know it's all in fun. All of us in the coaching profession know that USC has a tradition of buying the skill position players resulting in year in and year out having the most physically talented team in the nation. However, bought and paid for athlete's often display lack of character i.e. OJ and Reggie. USC "fans" most who have never played a down of college football, ignore the quality of character and justify the "just win baby" attitude exemplified by a former USC assistant coach by the name of Al Davis. Kyle Wittingham and Chip Kelly have built programs from the ground up. Hats off to both. Unfortunately College Football has embraced the "Portal Transfer System" effectively creating a semi-pro situation and a new Portal recruiting season. This is detrimental to the sport I love. The silver lining is that USC can no longer control the weather as they did with Notre Dame playing at home the last game of the season last Saturday in November but playing at Notre Dame in early October so the poor little SoCal boys wouldn't get cold! Hats off to the Offensive genius Lincoln Riley for bringing half of the OU team including a Heisman Trophy QB to LA, only to lose twice in the same season to the Utes 😂. The PAC 12 WILL be fine with Utah, Oregon (Nike $), Oregon State, Washington, WAZU, and maybe a resurgent Tree Team.

@@snakeydoo The real TL:DR - From a Utah fan looking in UCLA fans and players on average show tons of class, which matters even more than winning. But even if you just focus on winning, over the years we have played both teams and on average USC hasn’t looked significantly better than UCLA on the field, either. In fact, on average I tend to be a little more scared of UCLA. It’s funny that I even predicted that USC fans would say this was just jealousy of a team that is better than us, conveniently ignoring that UCLA beat us this year, and we beat USC twice. If it was just sour grapes, the team I should be sour towards is definitely UCLA. I certainly wouldn’t describe USC as being “back on top.” Not only did they lose to Utah twice, but if USC had played Oregon and Washington this year I doubt they would even have made it to the conference championship game. They made it because they lucked out on scheduling, not because they are good. If that’s a USC definition of being back on top I’d say that’s a pretty solid commentary on how long it’s been since they have actually genuinely been on top. Don’t get me wrong, they put a decent team on the field this year, but there’s a huge difference between being decent and being “on top.” There is a team on top right now that has shown a lot of class over the years, and I wish them the best. That is Michigan. It may be hard to understand, but showing class and being on top are not mutually exclusive.

As of 2018, USC has never beaten UCLA in football in the Year of the Dog. UCLA’s first team was fielded in 1929. The teams did not play each other in 1934. UCLA won 13-6 in 1946, the teams tied 15-15 in 1958, UCLA won 45-20 in 1970, UCLA won 20-19 in 1982, UCLA won 31-19 in 1994, UCLA upset USC 13-9 in 2006, and UCLA won 34-27 in 2018. Heismans, I’m re-adding and recognizing Reggie Bush’s Heisman and he should’ve never returned the trophy. When Pat Haden says, “ we expect us to be great on the field and off the field as well.” What he basically meant was Reggie Bush should have been great at NOT being caught off the field like he was at NOT being caught on the field. Every team was paying for players and the one good thing that may have came from the NCAA hypocrisy with Reggie Bush is the NIL rules today. Reggie should have his Heisman Trophy reinstated by both USC and the NCAA at least by USC in defiance of the NCAA hypocrisy. What do you think? UCLA/USC Rivalry aside, what do you all think?

When the hypocrite Pat Haden says "What happened at the end of Reggie's career was not good," he fails to mention it was HADEN who moronically extended Clay Helton, arguably the worst coach in Trojan history. It was HADEN who spurned Chris Petersen, it was HADEN who didn't have a clue what an athletic director is supposed to do. And likely it was HADEN who wanted the next piece of work--Lynn Swann--as his replacement. Haden did more damage to USC than Bush ever did.

C'mon man nobody in LA cares about college football like that. Only time I ever saw ppl wear USC jerseys was during the early 00s. I dont see that shit anymore only time I remotely see USC or UCLA stuff are bumber stickers or license plates with the logos but that's it. Only football jerseys and football talk you get here is NFL, and even then its Raiders,Cowboys,Rams and 49ers.
