Re-uploaded in 4K - From the Academy-Award nominated film, A Clockwork Orange - In a futuristic Britain, Alex DeLarge is the leader of a gang of "droogs": Georgie, Dim and Pete. One night, after getting intoxicated on drug-laden "milk-plus", they engage in an evening of "ultra-violence", which includes a fight with a rival gang.
In this scene, Alex and his Droogs interrupt a rival gang as they attempt to gang-rape a female. Under the backdrop of a theater as Rossini's overture plays, the rival gang is about to succeed when Alex shows up and challenges the rival gang leader to a fight - the naked female runs off. Mind you, saving the woman was not Alex's goal - he just wanted to perform some of the "ultra-violence."

It's filmed like a bar fight in a Western, it's more comical than scary. I suspect Kubrick wanted it this way to reflect Alex's childlike state of mind, to him it's all just fun and games. He can't see that people are actually getting hurt. The last shot of the fight is quite disturbing though, with Alex and his droogs beating the other boys on the ground. It's reminiscent of the ape men in 2001 beating a rival to death with bones.

Likely what Burgess was going for originally. Kubrick does an excellent job at translating Alex's unreliable narration while cutting out 99% of the dialogue.

I first saw Clockwork Orange when I was seventeen, and loved it. Then years later getting to meet Malcolm McDowell at a film convention. Nice guy with time to talk to his fans.

Filmed in an old English vaudeville house created by Fred Carno who started the career of Charlie Chaplin. It was torn down the year after this filming in 1971.

Makes one wonder if ole' Charlie ever saw Clockwork or any other Kubrick picture. If indeed so, I wonder what his opinions of Stanley as a filmmaker were? I know Kubrick counted Chaplin as one of cinema's great artistic geniuses and firmly believed the best of his movies would stand the test of time. Chaplin lived to 88, dying in Dec. 1977, so, in his lifetime, he would've had ample opportunity to see all but three of Kubrick's 13 full-length films. Did one of the seminal pioneers of cinema recognize brilliance in Kubrick?
