A Conversation on Mental Health, Psychiatry, Psychotherapy & Islam with Dr Abu Eesa ‎
00:00 - 05:34 Introduction and bio of Dr. AbuEesa
05:54 - 09:59 How did you get involved in psychiatry?
10:00 - 12:09 What is impact of psychiatry on your mental health and how do you deal with it?
12:10 - 17:10 Trauma and cognitive reframing with the Quran and Sunnah
17:11 - 22:56 Surah Al-Kawthar, Prophets Yaqub and Nuh as examples of reframing
22:57 - 26:18 Why is there a mental health stigma in the Muslim community?
26:19 - 28:56 Hamza's mental health, exercise and salawat
28:57 - 29:43 Tangent: Hamza Stuyding psychology then philosophy
29:44 - 33:47 Exercise, food and ibadah in the sunnah as a means to protect mental health
33:48 - 40:36 Given the transient nature of scientific conclusions and our pixelated understanding of the brain, including new advances in cognitive psychology, is it wise to rely on psychiatry as a final solution to mental health?
40:37 - 45:30 One must exhaust naturalistic explanations and causes before seeking non-naturalistic/super natural causes (jinn/sihr)
45:31 - 48:51 The need for the community to be connected to Allah
48:52 - 53:24 Destructive doubts, duaat and the need for a spiritual programme and the importance and impact of your friends and social environment on you mental health
53:25 - 55:19 Dr AbuEesa's KZfaq channel and connecting with him
55:20 - 01:01:20 What Islamic and best practice protocols, behaviours, routines, etc., would you advise to protect our mental health?
01:01:21 - 01:02:04 The need for practicing professionals in this field
01:02:05 - 01:04:42 The prophetic practice of acquiring medical and scientific knowledge from non-Muslims
01:04:43 Conclusion and Dr AbuEesa's new academic essay

Salam - I wanted to make a correction around 15.41. I was speaking about Aam Ul Huzn (year of sadness) for the Prophet (saws). I misspoke when I said his grandfather died that year! I meant to say his uncle Abu Talib. May Allah subhanawatallah forgive me.

@@shabanatasleem3532 I had no idea what Mirpuri is, I just googled it ("mirpur"). Fascinating ! May Allah bless you people from Kashmir ❤. My best friend's sister is arab from Algeria and she married a Kashmiri. I see. She did not take yous seriously yet you were right, ahead of your time, very brilliant allahumma barik. You being a mirpuri muslima makes you a woman of honour. She did not listen to you but her Creator Allah chose you to be muslima and He listens to you. People who belittle you do not know your true value, but Allah does. Don't worry, I understand you, it happened to me, I am a black muslima from Senegal ! This discussion is indeed essential and long overdue. Though it may deviate from the current topic, I hope you consider reaching out to Jordan Peterson for a dialogue. It appears that he might benefit from a deeper exploration of the range of Islamic philosophies and the diversity among Islamic scholars.

The cognitive reframing I heard of before once. The example given tho was of watching a movie and maybe you called it boring as you gave it the wrong meaning and a few years later in your life have you watched it again you would have given it a different meaning. Which sounded kind of fair. However when you said give it the meaning that Allah intends that just blew my mind!

Great video as always, thank you Brother Hamza. I would like to suggest, can you please use darker shades for the background? Though I mostly only listen to the audio, but sometimes I like to look at the screen, at those times a white screen is really intense and taxing on the eyes. So I think it'll be better. May Allah bless you and you continue to make these enriching videos.

16:20 whilst I understand the gist of what he's saying, I think we've become too sanitised and clinical in the way we approach how we describe the Prophet ﷺ. Let's not let our guard down, our Adab falter, our impression change and especially our language be controlled by western models. Whilst he ﷺ was human, he was the best of creation, the first of creation (see hadith relating Adam and exegesis of scholars), he was created from light and so it stands to know he is the best of light, the seeraj as we know, after Allah being 'Light of the heavens and the earth'. This illuminated soul ﷺ is not like other humans. To state he had 'human psychology', is a disservice to his ennobled psychology. His model and representation of behaviour was and is unreachable, and yet it is still our example. Not a soul can match his mindset, emotive states, expressive states, loving states, forgiving states and so on. We forget the sunnah is not just what he said and did, the third most important element which overly sanitised modernist thought has oft neglected, is the sunnah of his spiritual state, that is... HOW HE WAS. We've become so hoodwinked by Western models, largely Jungian, Freudian occultist and plagiarised thought models, faux science and clinicised academia, the language that goes with it, that we've forgotten our sacred language and the way we address things. Aside from that, I'm only a quarter of the way through admittedly, but come biased, as I've been studying the models of psychiatry and psychology, their origin and inception, whay they stand for and the degenerative history and the current intent behind the powers that be that run these institutes, how they creep into every day language and manipulate the masses for over 20 years. There is no khayr, period in their models and adapting them, or attempting to use them with reframed Islamic ideas, thinking we can randomly pick and choose, label something Islamic or even haphazardly try and find needles in the haystack of the huge body of work of ilm al nafs and tarbiyaa models, the compendium of tassawuf (whether one likes it or not, it stands firm as a far more valid science than psychiatry and psychology) models, and even basic fiqh knowledge which in and of itself absolutely annihilates much of the quackery associated with the labelling and supposed stigma of mental health disorders. If there is a supposed epidemic it's because hook, line and sinker we're buying into it all. Trace back 200 years, trace back even 50 years and 98% of the supposed mental health issues did not even exist. So, I'm sorry to say, the Quran, the Sunnah, the Scholars, the huge body of work of our tradition still has every single answer you're looking for, we're just too lazy or unwilling to shut up and listen, obey and settle down, along with the myriad of outright distractions at our fingertips keeping us from absorbing the light of Muhammad and the light of Allah's religion. Psychiatry and psychology have an inception of darkness. Things that start impure, with that intent will remain so. There is no end khayr in them both. There will only be madness and mass hysteria.

Jazakallah khayr for your opinion. I would advise you speak to students of knowledge like Muhammad Tim Humble and Gabriel Al Romani and mashaykh like Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem, Sheikh Hazem Rajeb and the likes. They work closely and collaboratively with me and always advocate to exclude a mental illness before proceeding with Ruqyaa. Allah subhanawatallah knows best.

Clearly you have not seen the suffering of individuals and their families with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-partum psychosis, OCD, substance use disorders or psychotic depression and suicidality. Just like other organs, the mind can become disordered and therefore requires treatment. We use a holistic approach that incorporates psychological therapies and medication as well as social and family interventions. As I mentioned in the interview, I have treated mashayakh and their family members. Mental health issues have always existed. There is evidence from the Quran and sunnah. Those who consume interest will stand ˹on Judgment Day˺ like those driven to madness by Satan’s touch. That is because they say, “Trade is no different than interest.” But Allah has permitted trading and forbidden interest. Whoever refrains-after having received warning from their Lord-may keep their previous gains, and their case is left to Allah. As for those who persist, it is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever. Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from leprosy, madness, elephantiasis, and evil diseases." حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ وَالْجُنُونِ وَالْجُذَامِ وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الأَسْقَامِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) Ali ibn Abi Talib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The pen is lifted from three people: a sleeping person until he awakens, a child until he becomes an adult, and an insane person until he regains his sanity.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1423 Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani May Allah subhanawatallah guide us.

Your credentials went straight out the door when you quoted Albani, a well known fabricator and non authority, a self proclaimed scholar with no ijazas, no formal training or isnad. Listing fake concocted DSM conditions doesn't give credit to your argument either. It does give rise to how hoodwinked you are by an occultist field espoused as science when it is anything but. It's the most disastrous humanities subject at the helm of lies, propaganda, hijacking of religion and morality in society posing as the saviour. Muslims who indulge in it are feared to be already too far removed from orthodoxy and proper Islamic tradition to even see their misguidance into throwing themselves into the delusion that they can treat a single soul.
