Rev. Rob Renfroe, newly retired clergy from the Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church and continuing President of Good News, took time to visit with me about the dynamics of neocolonialism in the church generally and The United Methodist Church specifically. We cover some important history for understanding our present moment with respect to African United Methodists participating in next year's General Conference, as well as frustrations more broadly with misunderstandings around how we have navigated the culture war's imposition onto shared ecclesiastical life. Rev. Renfroe explains the reason why he has chosen to remain within the UMC and what his hopes for the future are with respect to Methodism, especially as it pertains to the majority world (not the United States of America).

Another great interview. Rob's analysis and comments about where Africans are (Bishops, leadership and people) were very helpful - we miss a LOT of that information and nuance from far away. May God be with the African church as they decide their future. He has certainly been blessing and honoring their faith and witness!

One more reason to love Rob. He was our pastor for years and played an integral part in my husband's spiritual maturity and helped our marriage get much stronger after a tough period. He also taught us what love looks like. Clearly, he puts this into practice in his retirement too. I'm so glad he is helping other churches navigate the nonsense in the UMC.

I thought Rob was no longer UMC, he was promoting and spokesman for the Global church. I'm confused. Explain

Also, is pension fund money being inappropriately used to bring people over to the liberal camp? That's adds to the importance of accounting properly for how pension funds are being handled.

Schism is a sin. It is most often brought about by spiritual pride winning out over love. Wesley knew this, which is why he remained an Anglican all his life. All sides in this UMC contention need to repent and seek forgiveness, no matter how the matter ends up.

One cannot create schism when an organization has ceased to be the church. Leaving is just an acknowledgement that the UMC chose to follow a different gospel. Namely, that of leftist power.

@@plainspokenpodThat sort of comment only makes me more convinced that the root cause of this UMC schism is more political and cultural than truly theological.

@@jeffreyulrich3592 I think that's an unfortunate interpretation, as it makes you unable to hear the point I'm making. Leftism is a spirit of the powers and principalities of this age. It denies a biblical anthropology, hamartiology, and soteriology. It is materialist in nature, as well as hedonist. It flies in the face of biblical principles. The political and the theological do indeed overlap. If you think one realm can exist without being in dialogue with the other, you are in great error.

I’m sure your denomination is rethinking (vacinnations ). The politics seem to have hurt UMC.

The southern strategy isn't a myth. People who worked for Nixon have talked about it openly. "States rights" shorthand for racist segregation. From wikipedia "1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater won his home state of Arizona and five states in the Deep South, depicted in red. The Southern states, traditionally Democratic up to that time, voted Republican primarily as a statement of opposition to the Civil Rights Act, which had been passed in Congress earlier that year. Capturing 61.1% of the popular vote and 486 electors, Johnson won in a landslide." It isn't a myth or a conspiracy theory. Its a fact.

@@plainspokenpod hahaha did you seriously just link me a PragerU video as a source? Bwahahaha! Wow. So despite being a pastor you never worshipped Jesus, you worshipped Rush Limbaugh. Now I understand how you think tho so thank you for that.

@@nothingelse1520 In 1981, Lee Atwater famously discussed the Southern Strategy for 45 minutes, so Carol Swain is ill-informed. But even without being caught red-handed, it is common sense. Why are all the KKK hoodlums conservative?

I'm guessing that the UMC pension funds alone are worth $Billions, not to mention the value of real estate. Do you have a figure for the pension funds, or are they secretive and/or guilty of not accounting for the funds well? The love of money is the root of all evil. Many should realise that wealth can't be spent in hell.

@plainspokenpod Yeah, he sounds judgmental, and as he stated, uncaring. These are not fruits of the Holy Spirit Christ-like behaviors.❤
