Meet Mike Foster, he came to purchase the 355SBC I have for sale. After several negative experiences trying to find the forever engine for his Chevy Blazer, will he be satisfied with a Gold’s Garage engine?

Our fascination with Engines. They talk to us. They usually (though not always) make us smile, bring us together, and prompt conversation. 🙂 Thank you for this, Alan!

Castrol GTX Classic is a good oil with proper amount of ZDDP in it. What I like about Castrol GTX Classic is that it doesn’t start to separate and bubble until like 11,000 rpm. My old man told me this and that I should run it in my street bike back in 2006 I bought a new Suzuki Gsxr 1000 and my first oil change I switched to Castrol GTX and the power gain was noticeable instantly and after hard hits up to 185 mph the oil in the sight glass would have the tiniest bubbles almost not even noticeable and the oil would be flat across the glass. With the synthetic Suzuki oil it would have so many large bubbles the oil was barley visible in the sight glass at all. So my buddy had a 600 same year and make and he switched and it was same result. I pulled 15k+ rpm’s. So in my sbc 5-7k is nothing but I know that oil is lubricating well and staying in liquid form better.

I like that oil but it has a ton of detergents in it. I sent a sample off to Blackstone labs, the zddp is good but it has enough detergents for a diesel engine. Valvoline vr1 has more zddp/phosphorus and less detergents, Lake Speed Jr is a Licensed Petroleum Specialist and he covers both of these oils on "The Motor Oil Geek". I sent both oils of these oils off for my own analysis and mine and his results were nearly identical. Castrol classic will cause more wear long term compared to vr1 due to the high levels of detergents which kill the effectiveness of the zddp. I've been in the machine shop business since '85, 6 days a week. I've built and tore down thousands of engines of all calibers and the engines that run the vr1 seem to have little wear overall. Keep in mind, Driven gp1 oil (formulated by joe gibbs racing, Nascar) is even better than the vr1. I run it in all my expensive engines. The Castrol will work but if you're gonna use something with that much detergent, diesel oils are quite a bit cheaper and their formula is similar to the Castol classic. I just had an analysis done on Rotella t4 Diesel oil and it's similar to the Castrol, the Castrol does have a little more zddp but diesel oil is less than half the price of the Castol Classic where I live. We have some circle track guys that run Rotella in their roundy round cars.

Alan,you ever have problems with the spark plug boots or wires burning because of the headers,how do you avoid this? Thanks
@goldsgarage823626 күн бұрын
Good question, thanks David. As long as you keep the wires or boots from touching you should be ok. Adding good wire looms to keep them separate should help. If you do have tight clearances between the header and boot, you can purchase insulated booties that fit over the last few inches of the wire and the spark plug where it is close to the header. We use them on the race car. They are a little clumsy to install, but they work fine. We also use special 9mm racing wires that have their own insulation for the full length. Hope this helps. AG

Mr. Gold, did you ever build a destroked small block?
@goldsgarage823626 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question. If you mean a 302, yes. but if you mean a 400 block with a 350 crank, 377, no. A 377 is a great combination for high RPM power and HP/cu.in. but the 3.75 stroke will still work better on the street i think. Maybe someday. AG

Gota get better mics. everytime you rev the engine up it sounds like a new high pressure toilet flushing in an empty bathroom.
@ironmike74216 күн бұрын
Stop complaining. Everyone knows that the engine will sound like that when you rev it up. I don't see a problem with it at all. If that's the worst of your problems, I would say you're doing great.
