When I realized I was the last descendant of a multigenerational family of farmers dating back for hundreds of years. I watched it all fizzle away after my dad died. We sold all the farming equipment and a large portion of the property to pay for old farming debt. A few years later the bank took the farm house because of additional debt owed. Ever since then I’ve wondered what to with that land I inherited up there near Ocala. Ten years later I started my own cattle ranch not knowing much about cows or how to do it. I had my eight acre inheritance that was just an empty pasture. I purchased a ten year lease on the adjacent property and now operate on 16 acres, plus I got four more at my Aunts place next door. That gave me twenty acres to work with. I started the project last year in August of 2020 and work out there ever spare moment. Every chance I get I’m out there on my days off my regular day job. First thing I did was get a permit from the county for the construction project. Next thing I did was install a power pole for electric to the well pump. Then I trenched 800 feet to the well - and dug it three feet deep and then laid the 800 feet of electrical wire. I installed a 1 hp in ground jet pump and called the county for an inspection. I passed and called the electric company the next day to get service. After that I piped 400 feet of irrigation and hooked up two water toughs. I knew I couldn’t let my heritage end with me. I had very little knowledge about anything I was doing but managed to successfully get it all done. I built the breaker box and the weather head. I got the codes from the city and the electric company and built it according to their specifications and the county codes. I thank God for the strength and am still very thankful. I didn’t spend much time on the farm growing up. I was taken away as a young boy when I was about eight years old to live in the city where I grew up in Clearwater. I visited Anthony often, but never stayed that long. Now I plan to retire up there. I purchased seven heifers in October, 2020 and moved them next door to my Aunts property next door and finished the electrical to the well. She’s always loved cows and grew up on the farm. They are about a year old now and I still keep them there. I’ll breed them after they’re close to two years old. After I got the well running I bought more cows. I got eight pregnant cows, a few steers, a couple more heifers and a bull. I’ve been blessed with six calves this season. I had four in March and twin bulls calves in June, four baby bulls and two heifers. It’s all been an extremely exciting experience and I know my papa and my dad are proud looking down on me knowing I’ve busted my butt every spare minute I had to keep the farm going. Now I have twenty six head and another pregnant mama due soon. I did most everything myself with very little help. I didn’t let anything or anyone stop me, not even covid. I got it on Christmas Eve and was back to work the next week in January… felt like the flu. Now look what I’ve accomplished with the grace of God. I could of never done it alone. Even though I was by myself… I always had my papa or dad to guide me as I just followed with my gut feelings.

Great video and sorry about the calf...we have tons of coyotes around us along with bob cats (N.E. Texas)..we just brought home our first bred beef cow - 2 mos. bred - angusxbrangus mix...6 yrs old...new to cows...we won't be having a herd...just raising meat for us on our homestead...she should calve out in May next year...and will set up a nice paddock out of one side of the barn for her to have safety having the calf... we have 9 rescue horses on our 27 acres...just have the cow 1 week today...so she is a bit skiddish being lone cow, new people, and property...but she is doing good...bucket training her on cubes and she comes and follows us pretty good...we raise laying hens and hatch out chicks...raise cornish x chicks and butcher for good meat...raise meat rabbits and hoping for a good breeding as soon as the weather can cool down some...got a couple of gilt pigs that may be ready to go to slaughter by December...and now added some beef to our table...gowing veggies and have some fruit trees...canning and freezing...living a clean life...like your channel!

now what u need is 10 goats, just looking at the pen where the bulls are,only thing is left is tall weeds, the goats will eat them weeds down to the ground then return too eat any new growth over a few times killing that weed, leaving more space for grass to regrow in. we got a few goats last year to keep the weeds down in our hog yard, its mostly a paved area but weeds still sneak up around all the barns etc and now with the goats there the weeds are gone.

Dude Hey! I'm your South African subscriber here...I have a few questions...Would you recommend starting a cow cal operation from bottle calves? If yes, is 20 heifers no bull manageable for one person? : assume all the machinery, milk, grass and grains is an abundance.

Yes, or borrow a bull from neighboring farms... I just don't want to deal with a bull YET!
@FarmandHammer4 жыл бұрын
If you are wanting to start a beef cow calf operation, I would not start with bottle calves if you can afford to buy heifers or cows. If you have limited money to spend, then bottle calves are the cheaper route. Not to mention the bottle calves are much more docile when full grown. Yes 20 should be manageable for one person!

Nice video of that, nice lookin animals, your black cow there the one was about to get after you, those are the ones that are perfect for predators but mostly for coyotes.. cuz we had a cow like that once, but sometimes there pain in the butt especially when it involves their own baby's after so many hours of after having it. So I'll say she's a good protective mother of her young. & #2 that's the problem with yearlings there worst then cows on times of getting out of the gates..lol #3 but that's the part of farming is there's always something needs fixing or checking before being used again. And last but not least sorry for your calf there, my guess is that she could of been out eating a little ways so she wasn't able to protect her baby? Or there again some cow's some, don't care about there young like they should be. But inerways good work.👍 and good

Where do you find people selling black angus cross bottle calves or just black angus bottle calves? Also how much do you pay for them on average?
@FarmandHammer4 жыл бұрын
They are hard to find but in my area you just have to drive around and ask the dairy farmers if they know of anyone breeding their Holstein cows to beef bulls. If you try to buy them on Craigslist you will end up paying much more than market price. Most dairy farmers would rather you come pick them up than have to haul a few to the sale barn every week. So just ask around and eventually you should find some. Most dairy farmers in my area are about to retire so they don’t want to raise anymore dairy heifers to keep. That’s why they breed with beef bulls.

Have you ever thought of taking the calve that's sucks on things or other calves and separate it to see it will stop?
@hayleypaigereviews67443 жыл бұрын
That would cause really bad stress for the calf, they need to be with others as they feel safer and they need the stimulation from having others around them (especially if they’ve already gotten used to being with other cattle) Separating the calf from the others could cause the bad habit to get worse or could lead to additional bad habits developing...it could also lead to behavioural issues.

Would you ever have a problem with someone asking you for permission to come and roam your field in search of mushrooms? How would you respond to that? I love studying the local farms and ecosystems , also foraging wild mushrooms (not just the magic kind)! I won’t trespass, but I’m not sure how to approach these good, hard working people. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
@FarmandHammer4 жыл бұрын
We don’t have any mushrooms growing in the fields but a lot of the woods in Missouri have some mushrooms in the spring. Most farmers probably wouldn’t mind if you asked for permission to walk through their woods, but it all depends on the farmer. Some don’t want ANYONE going on their property and others don’t care as long as you ask. Worst case you ask and they say no. If we had some timber, I’d check it for mushrooms too. But sadly we don’t hardly have any timber on the property. You might have a little better luck asking some hunters if you can check their property for mushrooms.
