Wwofing (World Wide Oppoortunities on Organic Farms) is a wonderful network that matches volunteers with farms in need of extra help.
Through woofing you get to experience how locals live, learn new skills and meet likeminded people.
If you are interested in learning more on how to grow veggies, care for animals and look after land while traveling, Wwoofing can be an incredible experience.
In this video I share a very small glimpse of my experience working in a Wwoof croft the Scottish Higlands.
This croft in particular was growing excellent Scottish Tea. I had no idea tea could grow in Scotland but apparently if cared with incredible persistence and patience it can.
The farm just launched their blends of tea last week, you can find it here: tullochtea.co.uk/

We have yet to build something that will stand up to the goats! They are experts in demolition! I like your thoughts about animal products. More of us need to see how food is produced. We feel okay about using eggs from the chickens that live here, but we do share some with them. They would pile up and rot if we didn't take them. I completely agree about other animal products, though. The food-from-animal industries are horrible for the animals and the planet. And thanks for sharing your music!

Great video Marina, very interesting to hear your views on dairy and eggs. I do not eat meat or dairy but I do eat eggs and I have convinced myself that it is o.k if the chickens are well cared for and they are properly free ranging but if I am totally honest I do have a little niggle in the back of my mind about it. After hearing your view on it may be I will give it some more thought, 👍. You are very industrious and talented I am sure that farm will be missing your presence around the place. Glad to see that you kept the wellies 😂 Thanks for another great video

Those are some well behaved Nubians, and congrats for getting out of your comfort zone and taking part to all of the realities of a dairy farm so you could try to understand this reality. Although (sorry for leaving a comment publicly here, Marina) consuming animal-based produce and products such as dairy and eggs from a place like this farm you were at doesn't promote animal cruelty/intensive meat industry AT ALL, on the contrary, it is the only chance we have as a society to go back to a more balanced, humane, and local food industry. Feeling like it's not right to eat or use animal produce is a respectable personal moral value, but it is also based on a big misunderstanding of the symbiotic relationship humans have with the land and other beings we have evolved with over the last 10 000 years, especially with goats and chickens (ok I'm kind of biased here). That being said, it is a decision people can make today thanks to this privilege we have of being able to consume items that travel thousands of miles for a few bucks, putting pressure on farmers all around the globe for Northern Hemisphere consumers, investing in monoculture and crops that kill this precious soil of ours to which animals play such a substantial role in preserving too. But maybe people who don't consume any animal products are centuries ahead in terms of cultural and economical values, and humanity will evolve towards that. And we can all discuss and disagree all we want (it's not like I just rambled for 10 minutes), it all ends up being a personal decision, and it's quite amazing we live in a world where we have the privilege of choosing how we want to live.
@WildSheGoes
@WildSheGoes 6 жыл бұрын
I agree it is a privilege to choose not to eat meat and I'm grateful for it. It's also true that not eating meat does not make our food footprint necessarily smaller, but, as you know, I always talk from an ethical point of view first. The environmental impact for me (at least in this case) comes second. As I said in the video I think that if you are going to eat dairy and eggs than they better come from a small holding like this, however if you have the choice to NOT eat them than I don't see why you should. To me loving the animals and supporting their exploitation are just two things that don't go well together. But I agree, we could be discussing this topic for days and days and still not find a common ground and that's ok. The fact that people are posing themselves questions about what they eat is already a step forward in the right direction.

Your beliefs coincide with my own in regards to the consumption of dairy and meat. It has been four years now and my health hasn’t been better. The only area I semi struggle is finding good footwear ~ I’ve heard good things about a company called xero from a number of well known KZfaqers, plus I hike and run a lot and I’ve also struggled with blisters ... I hear this brand has zero drop with wide toe box , so I’m kind of hyped as to how they will perform. Oh, I’m wooofing next summer and hope to share my skills in a similar fashion . Thank you for sharing this experience and I hope you’re having fun ~ G x

Ooh, lovely vlog and SO interesting! I have a few questions of course! 1. Do they teach you skills like milking and building before you start or are these things you happened to know already? 2. Is it purely a volunteer job or do you get paid something for it? Or is it in return for being able to stay on their land? 3. You mentioned Odie doesn’t like goats! Does he come with you into their area or stay outside? What does he do while you are working and if you do leave him outside, how safe do you feel he is on his own? Or if you take him with you inside their area does he react to the goats or vice-versa? And finally - not an official question but I’d like to send you one of my books to read if you ever have the time. Do you have a postal address I can send it to where it might reach you someday? And if so, would you like a copy in English, French or Italian?! Thanks for another lovely vlog! 😊 🐶 🐾 xxx

Hi Tabitha! Here we are: 1 depends on the farm, some do require you to already be skilled, some don't. Most of them are happy to teach. 2. Yes it is mainly a volunteer job although some farms do offer an allowance (especially for long term or skilled woofers). You usually work up to 6 hours a day 5 days a week in exchange for food and accomodation. 3. Odie barks at the goats so the mum goats would charge him and he would get even more upset. Very funny to watch. He would come with me everywhere a part from the chicken and the goats field. He wouldn't do them any harm if he did but I it's better not to stress the animals! As for the book, thank you so much, that's very sweet I didn't know you wrote? In any case, I won't have any address for quite a long time I'm afraid as I will be in the Outer Hebrides for the next few months. Glad to know that you are better Tabitha!

I respect your principles! But if we only ate pasta (which is just wheat flour) we would have to cut down half the worlds forests just to grow enough wheat for everyone! Plus all the pesticides they use on wheat fields is terrible! Eating a lot of pasta produces a very high level of body fat which in turn makes hot days so unbearable. I eat a lot of organic free range eggs and yogurt and I am very lean and the hot summer heat barely bothers me because I have such a low percentage of body fat. You are drop dead gorgeous and even more beautiful on the inside! I would not change a single thing about you! I am just adding to your intelligent debate. I wish for you to keep evolving your awareness and wisdom. It will only grow over time! Congratulations on who you are : )

Chicken lay eggs even if they are not fertilzed, would be wastefull to just let them rot.

After gastric bypass surgery meat don't taste right anymore. And the fact life needs to be extinguished for my food is disturbing me. After the animal is killed the rotting process starts.. that idea alone is enough for me to quit eating meat. But eggs I have no problem with because the chicken does not suffer needlessly.. as for leather products my jacket is made from an animal that died of old age 🙄

Hens lay 300 eggs a year, the closest wild relatives of domesticated hens lay 13-15 eggs a year. Domesticated hens are physically and a lot of the time mentally exhausted and die faster than they would if they laid 13-15 like wild hens. And as a person who is capable of understanding that every creature deserves basic respect and right to live, you don't need to have any points and reasons to stop eating eggs, it's just wrong and twisted to slay hens because you want some fucking cake or omelette.

Unfortunately the dairy and egg industry are best-friends with the meat industry, one could not exist without the other. Although at first sight it might seem that you're not harming animals when you only consuming produce, you are only helping to support the meat industry. It is a real shame how little known this issue is, but there is a lot of info online if you'd like to know more on the topic!
