A Deep Dive Into The Furby Fandom

Love them or hate them, Furby - the nostalgic toy from the (late) 90s took over the US and the rest of the world by storm. People wanted the fluffy robot so badly that they fought each other in stores, scalped them online, and the government was concerned that Furby was a spy or at the very least, a national security risk.
Yet, many people were especially creeped out by Furby, so rumors about the fluffballs being evil, haunted, and possessed started to spread. Add lost media, early internet websites, and weird video games to the mix, and you get a perfect recipe for creepypasta. Or horror video games like Tattletail. Thus, people found creative and horrifying ways to destroy innocent furbots and even made their own fandom for Furby haters.
With every iteration (And there are many!), the number of straight-up bizarre controversies and urban legends surrounding Furby only grew. Remember when we all thought Furby could actually learn words? Yeah. That was a pretty fun hoax, or was it?
However, as Hasbro stopped Furby's production and their mainstream popularity veined, they got a second chance online. The Furby Tumblr Fandom (Furblr) is a dedicated and accepting community - with a whole lot of drama, scams, and questionable content. And also, creatively modified furballs that ranged from body horror creations like My Little Pony oddbodies to the Long Furby that changed meme culture forever. Even fake Furby knockoffs like Peepy or a Hamtaro lookalike robot are adored and have their own fandom on Tumblr.
So, hug your nostalgic plushie (or Furby), get some popcorn, and let's jump into the wonderfully strange world of Furby and the weird tales of its undying fandom.

Pretty sure the parents didn't like it since it could teach their kids that abuse leads to bad behavior. Which could make some kids realize that their parents are abusive. That is the only somewhat logical reason I can think of as to why it wouldn't be liked. I'm sure some people were Karens though and didn't have any real reason

People back then were terrified of all forms of electronics and kids entertainment because they didn't understand technology. Furbies are a weird thing for me, because I definitely had one as a child, but not because I *wanted* one. It was a gift and it was neat for like a month and then relegated to the back of my closet. But now as a fully grown adult I almost want one again. Mostly for the modification trend, making a custom furby sounds like a fun project.

I knew about the Furby presence on Tumblr, but I didn't realise how seriously they took it. I thought it was just a few "unhinged" people who really leaned into the Furbies being "scary", like the famous "Long Furby". I assumed that Furby customisation was a thing, but didn't realise how deep it goes! And I've *never* seen an anthro Furby before. Sooo cute. Edit: I take back every mean thing I have said about Furbies. I have changed my mind. I am now a part of the Furby hive mind.

Though, I know I've been involved for too long when I would hear you say a certain fact and think "well, no, that's not how I remember it!!" I'm glad my fandom drama post was a helpful tool for this video, too. How strange it is to see such old posts of mine again! I've been relatively hands off in the fandom due to graduate school (I can now safely say from personal experience that, no, no furby fan over the age of 25 is normal!). But seeing this again actually drove me to tears. Furbies got me through a really difficult time in my life, and it was nice to take a trip down memory lane. Eyes fall off a teddy bear? He's blind and this smaller dog plushie is his guide dog. Honestly I have more fond memories playing with my damaged toys as a child than my undamaged ones. The diva and baby changing are 'particularly hard to watch: the diva visibly struggles not to change while the baby sounds completely terrified. It didn't scare younger me exactly, I mostly just felt bad for the poor thing. Also, this video has Undertale and Deltarune music in the background, which is awesome.

love this video! way before the furby fandom became popular in 2019 me and my friends made furby videos on youtube in 2013-2014. i was 11-12 years old and was, as an undiagnosed autistic kid, a walking encyclopedia for furbies much to my parents’ dismay. i was also known as the weird furby kid at school and was ostracized and bullied harshly but thankfully i had an online community around the same age as me to back me. furbies weren’t that expensive to buy in bundles on ebay and at thrift stores back then so i had over 30 at my peak and would take the fur off of some of them and try to fix/mod them. i was able to obtain a kid cuisine furby a couple of years ago and it’s my pride and joy lol

You are far from the only autistic person in the community take me for instance I’ve only ever been involved with the community through watching their KZfaq videos and commenting on them but I am autistic as well as being blind also as soon as I started watching the community on KZfaq a bunch of my friends in my autism special class got interested because I tried to keep it a secret but one of my other friends named Martin walked in on me while watching community videos and he was like oh my god what is that and I told him and I thought he would keep quiet about it because I was afraid of being bullied but he started spreading the word and instead of being bullied I became one of the most popular kids in my class of only six send the word spread to the rest of my schools special Ed department and believe it or not I am sure every autistic individual in my hometown knows about the community fine now and we are all loving it! maybe not every individual in my hometown but at least all the guys in my class and the neighboring class room which is approximately 15 of us I don’t know if they spread the word to the rest of my schools special Ed department as well but I secretly hope they did! because this community is truly amazing! also I am sorry about the typos those are caused by my speech to text software which I use because I have trouble with manual typing

Those audio clips you played of a 2005 furby glitching just re-traumatized me hahaha. I woke up multiple nights to those sounds and to the "I can see you" and "feed me!" and a high pitched "WAAAAA" (like a baby crying.) I ended up begging my mom to let me keep it on the couch at night instead of my room. She said no and just thought I was playing with it in bed when I wasn't supposed to, so I buried it in the bottom of my toybox. Next time I looked for it, it was gone. I've never seen it again. To this day my mom says she doesn't know what happened, but I think she got spooked and got rid of it when I was at school one day

Love the video but as a furby customiser myself it is a bit of a shame most of the customs in the video are posted without credit which is a little disheartening since people reposting images of what is a form of art without credit is one of the most frustrating things that happens because people don’t tend to consider the amount of work that goes into them! Also I feel like you’re missing a huge part of the fandom! After the tumblr fandom died down a little 2018-2021 saw a huge fandom boom on Instagram! The Furby fandom was huge on Insta and had a lot of drama and trends etc. there was a lot of development especially for the customisation side of the fandom!💖 but I do get that it’s harder to research fandom history on Insta than tumblr!

Great video! I came in having little knowledge of furbies or any kind of fandom. And I left entertained and informed. It's always fun to see someone talk with that much passion for a subject. Btw, before this I had mostly heard of current furby trends by Matt Rose, a guy who does voiceovers and because of his furby horror story readings also various extents of ehm... modifications (he made a long furby. But he also made furby risotto once. It was a fan's request).

This was a fun listen. I was a high schooler who was terrified by her Furby still talking when the batteries were removed. This was also during the "Blair Witch is totally real" era, so let's not take chances with a talking toy with no batteries. I remember tossing it in a drawer in the dining room, where it probably still is 20 years later. Look forward to more content from you, subscribed. :)

The community labeling certain Furby glitches or malfuctions as disabilites or chronic illnesses such as MSA and blindness is really interesting to me - I imagine a not insignificant portion of the Furby community have disabilites and chronic illnesses similar to some Furby malfunctions, and maybe having a Furby that has one of those traits and showing it love and care helps those struggling, and helps them realize that they themselves are deserving of care and love.

Furbies were a cool part of my children’s childhoods. My oldest, 21 now, had two. My twins, 13 now, had two as well. By the time my twins got them, you could feed them and care for them using an iPad. Loved that feature. The first re-released Furby my oldest got, glitched out and turned mean. It was some sort of common problem, apparently. We sent them a form, and customer service helped us send his back, and he got a new one. Done through ToysRUs at the time. I just remember how the guy treated my child, who was maybe 6 at the time. He spoke mostly to him over the phone. My son, who was very mature always, just loved that and never forgot that interaction. My nephews will be getting my twins’ old ones for their birthdays soon. We believe ever child should have a Furby. Sorry for running on….this brought back good things for me. 😌

Little did I know that the poor thing would be banned from the house and had to stay permanently at my grandparents' place, they hated it so much 😆 Also anyone else remembers having to lock it inside a cupboard to finally get it to shut up, only to be greated by a joyous "C'est la fête!"
