Spanning 2900 acres on the eastern edge of Las Vegas Nevada, is the Clark County Wetlands Park. The heart of the park is a 210-acre nature preserve. Here you can escape the city of Las Vegas and walk amongst the trees, streams, and ponds. There are miles of both paved and unpaved trails at the park for you to enjoy. More than 300 species of birds and 70 species of mammals and reptiles have been identified at the park. The wetlands park is shaped by four different water sources: urban runoff, shallow groundwater, storm water, and reclaimed water from the Las Vegas Wash.
The Las Vegas Wash is twelve miles long and empties into Lake Mead. An average of 200 million gallons of reclaimed water passes through Las Vegas Wash and wetlands daily. The Las Vegas Wash contributes approximately 2 percent of the water level to Lake Mead. Due to the increased amount of water runoff through the wash over the past several decades, erosion was becoming a significant problem. A series of water flow control structures have been built to slow down the flow of water. Additionally, the sides of the was have been stabilized with native plants and construction debris.
Clark County Wetlands Park has a wonderful nature center that opened in 2013. There is a 10,000 square foot exhibit gallery at the center, with lots of interactive displays. The Clark County Wetlands Park is free and open daily during daylight hours.
