The time is finally here! We just got started planting corn. This is the first of a series of videos about planting. Today I’ll give an overview of how the planter works. Go ahead and ask any questions you might have and I’ll do my best to answer them in upcoming videos. Hop in, let’s go for a ride!

It’s mind boggling to realize how much engineering , manufacturing and labor is required to put a box of cereal on the breakfast table. This is knowledge that should be explained in schools so that folks would have appreciation for America’s farmers.

Everyone thinks that college is the only way to earn a living, and it's damn sad.
@larrydaniels6532

What is being shown is a small, almost insignificant amount of the totality of the engineering, manufacturing and labor that is needed to put a box of cereal on the shelf. First of all, field corn is primarily used for animal feed. Secondly, the value of a farmer's crop would be nothing if it was not further enhanced - oats, wheat, corn all need massive investments to get to a product the consumer can use, billions of dollars that food processors have made to convert raw grain into a consumer product, add to that the substantial advertising, transportation and a host of other expenditures and you can see that the farmer is only a part of a very complicated chain. It is a bit like asking what is the most vital organ in your body- the brain, the heart, the lungs? Eliminate one and the others are doomed. The truth is that each is relying on the entire system to function as a whole!

@@c.shoefish Er, I would have the video would have reinforced that college would be a really really good idea to understand, make the best use of, and innovate in farming. College without hands on experience and dirt under your nails? That would not be farming.

Dude, field corn is primarily for animal feed, ethanol, and high fructose corn sweeteners. This is not sweet corn, I'll bet Bloomberg knows the difference! I can also guarantee that if Michael Bloomberg put his vast knowledge to the task of farming he would surpass almost everyone else that is farming, he didn't become a billionaire by being stupid, his intelligence would be rewarded in whatever endeavor he chose!

I moved back to my hometown in June and started working at the local Co-op in July. That is as close as I've ever come to row crop farming. But I've always found it interesting and I want to be able to help local farmers and possibly learn to operate the equipment first hand. I'm glad I found your channel and I have subscribed to learn more from you!

Hey Carl...Great video today! I have never been a farmer and for some reason, now retired, I’ve developed a liking to farming videos. Of the ones that I’m subscribed to you just gave the best step by step process of how that planter works. Others show you the planter machine, load it and that’s it. You have a gift of explaining things that make perfect sense. John Deere should start throwing equipment your way to demo. Keep doing what you are doing! Looking forward to your next video.

Raised on a farm many years ago and long before this technology. Most of the time you didn't know you had planter problems until the plants came out of the ground. I agree with Dennis that all the channels show what is done but you told and showed us how it is done. I'm 100% smarter now.

@markwheeler202
@markwheeler202 4 жыл бұрын
Things are a little different from when I helped my dad plant soybeans with our two-row planter back in the late 1960's. I saw on a seat at the back of the planter and would raise and lower the planter with a lever. Marker arms would show where to drive on the next pass. Our planter was actually equipped to do check-row planting (Google it - fascinating). This dates to back when horses were used to cultivate corn, so that you could cultivate in two different directions. The wires had knots on them that triggered the planter to drop a seed such that each row lined up with the preceding rows. I can't imagine how much work that would have been, but farmers back in the day took enormous pride in their efforts.

Hi. Sooo, it sounds like self driving tractors have been around longer than self driving cars? So much technology involved. I assume you input info, like the size of the field, then that corn planter computer tells you what? how many pounds of corn to place in those yellow canisters? You were pretty precise on how many seeds were going to be needed. What counts the seeds? How long have you been using this technology? I assume the technology pays for itself in better planting, less wasted seed n better growth n yield of a field? Yep looking forward to more videos. You are a great teacher !! N lucky to have a great cook that delivers!! Peace to you and yours

Thanks Carl amazing techno in that cab. You make it look easy. Hope it all goes well and I am sure you have a few clues on what to watch out for when its not working properly. Here in Aussie we call those missed rows in a crop Fox Runs.

Hey Carl, this was awesome! I cant believe how automated it is. Your dad must be beside himself when he compares to how it was planting corn when he was your age.

Thanks! It’s a lot different for sure. Dads had a box with 12 orange lights that would flash to indicate that seed was coming out of all the tubes.

Great video! Very, very cool presentation on today's planting technology. This, from a guy who learned to plant with Dad's Oliver 88, and a John Deere 494A. Best we could do was find the right plates for population, keep checking visually to make sure the drive chain and fertilize feeders were turning, and fight the manual steering to plant the (4) 38" rows as straight as we could. Therein, was both the challenge... and the art. ;)

Things have come along way. I started running a planter in early 70s on my farm. Forced out of farming 2012 but still involved working ground and operating a combine in the fall for farmer ive rented the farm too. Run combine since dad put me on one about 1965 i was 10 enjoyed every minute of it over the years. Planter basics are still much the same but electronics have improved alot. Wish could still plant some enjoyed the mornings of crisp air and finishing fields as you go. Try the best you can is all anyone can ask.

It’s great that you are still able to be involved with the farm work. It’s a brutal business financially and it’s always sad to be forced out. That’s why I am working for someone instead of farming full time with dad.

Really enjoy your videos. Really explain just enough for people to learn without being confused and enjoyable even for people that know what’s going on. Would really like to see you do a live stream sometime. Question on your tillage. Do you change the angle of your ab line each season ? Or just enough to break compaction?
@dodgebrothersfarmandranch9206

Thanks for the support! We do about the same angle with tillage each year but we go the opposite direction. Last year we went 3 degrees left this year we are 3 degrees right

Very thorough and good in depth description of how a planter works and Thank You for that. If you work with air seeders maybe you can describe how they work versus a planter. We use lots of them in Canada for wheat and canola I believe and from what I read they cannot seed large seeds? Not for row crops either. The seed population must be done by a variable speed electric motor seed wheel? I am a Power Engineer and like technology and you are very knowledgeable. Thanx.

Carl thanks for the video’s. I learn a lot but watching them. I’m a young farmer just getting started in farming. How big is your tractor and what size of planter are you planting with. How many acres do u guys farm. What do plant more of corn or soybeans. I see you fertilizer tanks on the back of your planter.

Did you really put this video up at 2 AM? Thank you for your dedication! Looks like ideal planting conditions. What an amazing piece of machinery! Acres per hour? Obviously there is prep time prior to heading out, right? How is seed and row separation determined? guessing row is fixed and seed by hybrid type. Number of acres to do? Pounds of seed? What soil temperature and moisture do you look for? Not clear on how seeds are metered from tank Do you listen to radio or music when planting or listen for key sounds that all is running right? How do you keep focus with so much automation? Do you have to tip the caterer for job site delivery? I just feel your excitement for this time of the year.
