A few tips on identifying naturally toned coins vs artificial toning

What does real toning look like versus artificial toning? I found two coins with similar toning, but one if these things is not like the other. I attempt to give a few pointers on things to look for when trying to identify artificially toned coins. Thanks for your comments, subscription, and suggestions.

Thanks for the info! It's crazy how creative people are getting when creating AT coins. Some of them are really impressive, but experienced eyes can usually pick them out. After being active in the toner world for a few years, I think I've worked up good eyes to pick out the AT coins. And from my experience, it looks like NGC is the way to go for graded toned coins. PCGS is straight grading way too many AT coins and it's hurting the toner market. Thanks again!

@@TheCoinGeek Thank you for your vids! I just think numismatics is such an incredible hobby that should be valued by so many more people. History, art, precious metals, investing, the hunt, the people, the stories, and the list goes on. I'm 35 and I really wish my dad would have got me into this much sooner - and spared me from wasting so much money on basketball cards haha! Take care and keep the vids coming!

Thanks for your information, I have start to sell coins and never thought coins could be counterfeit, I was told to take 1976 Bicentennial quarter I never try to sell anything that wasn’t legit. Have anyone seen this coin as a fake?

I had somn coins i was looking at sitting on my wood stove, my brother started a fire not seeing them. When i got homn the coins wern darker and one looknd rainbowish. Are they ruined?

Are the quarters at 1:06 stored in a Wayte Raymond album? The older albums tone coins well because of sulfur content.

Yes, that is the old school Wayte Raymond style album. I still love them when I see them.

@@TheCoinGeek I noticed that your profile pic is an Athenian "owl" tetradrachm. Ancient numismatics is very different from US numismatics. Most notably, ancient collectors hate slabs. That's because they resent NGC for imposing the Sheldon Scale on ancient coins. Traditionally, ancient coins were graded on a different scale from US coins. In addition, NGC does not guarantee the authenticity of ancient coins. Ancient numismatics is an academic field in which collectors are historians and expected to read Greek or Latin. Hence why ancient collectors believe slabs are unnecessary. What is your view on the ancient coin hobby? And what is your view on slabbing ancients?

Is there a difference between toning and tarnish? Do tarnish strips prevent toning?

Toning is just the coin collector word for tarnish. It sounds nicer, and sometimes people like it. There are some anti toning materials (including silica ) that people use to prevent toning.
