I'm 65 years old and I want to share the way I see the topic of toned Morgans. I started collecting in 1965 and in those days virtually all coin reference material was in the form of black and white photography. There was little if any attention given to toned anything and in fact a rainbow toned coin back then would have been called some type of 'fluke' or oddity. They simply weren't nearly as common as they are now. I remember as well a famous magazine cover with a colorful morgan with a stratospheric value at the time of the late 1970's or early 80's. That event, to me, seemed to trigger something because it was from that time on that "rainbow" coins became a topic and over time have grown nearly ubiquitous. It is much like a fad but I find it difficult to believe that these coins existed naturallyt before the late 1970s or early 1980s. That's my assumption. Furthermore, based upon my conversations with scientists and engineers about the topic, most "think" that it is impossible to tell 'cleaned' or discriminate "questionable color" based solely on the chemistry and optics. Sure, shiny coins are discernable but I have yet to be convinced that anyone can resolve the tarnish/color issue simply by "looking" at metal that has undergtone a chemical process. According to the experts I spoke to, they didn't know of any means to do so without dpossibly destroying the coin in the process. One expert suggested AI may help resolve this but that will take time. If and when that does happen my guess is that many coins will be discovered to have been doctored, at least until some new means to doctor coins comes up. The way I see it the color doctors are likely in command at this point. I simply hope they don't over 'do - it' and destroy things for the rest of us.

Great video, thanks! Where do you get most of these toned coins from? How do you know they've been naturally toned? I love toning that's authentic. But I'm not a fan of artificially toned. Beautiful examples! Well done! 😊

One note I would make is when using great collections archive you can only go back 1-2 years at most to determine the value of the toners especially with this entirely new market

Very excellent video discussing how to actually evaluate Toned Morgans (and other coins). While I still disagree about the premium, not that currently "the market hasn't spoken" but that it won't always command a ridiculous premium and will settle down over time. Only time will tell though. Keep up the awesome vids!videos!! :)

I appreciate toners and understand the likability, however I much prefer original non toned coins in older holders! With that being said, I am not in the business so I collect/buy what I like not what others like and will pay for. As far as investments, what’s hot today may not be hot tomorrow! As you said, the market will dictate and speak for itself. Another good vid, thanks for the input, now if I come across toners at good prices, I’m a buyer!

My problem is that I am not big admirer of toned coins. Don’t get me wrong I do like rainbow toning, but not the dark toning. I also don’t like the premium that toned coins command as most are out of my price range. Thank you for another good informational video.

In the past I really didn't like toned coins, but lately it is starting to hit me. I like some toned but I also don't like some like too dark and so on. It is kinda hard for me to tell what they are really worth besides in a PCGS or NGC holder.

Thanks for sharing, In Canada I sent in beautiful toned canadian silver dollars for grading(ICCS) the toned coins are grading alot lower then my blast white silver dollars. I really like the nicer toned coins feel canadian grading is to hard on the toners,I have some awesome high grade toned canadian silver dollars with grades of Au50-Au55. If I clean them the grades would be MS62-MS65.

What about getting something that was reholdered that was a CAC. Obviously the new PCGS doesn't have the sticker, but I have a CAC #. How is this done?

Did u take a picture of the original coin with the CAC sticker on it? I did that 2 years ago and sent the coin and picture to CAC in the new holder and they re- stickered for $6. You must be a cac member to do or use an authorized dealer.

Study the color progression found on the websites I provided and study coins that have straight grade and which haven’t. Either on eBay or sites.

Well done. An interesting video . . .quite informative. I did some articles for Coin World and Numismatic News 'back in the day' that started the ideas of color progression. If you want to dig a bit . . . you may find what has been called "the greatest Morgan Toner ever" . . . . "BagBurn". Had it for 11 years . . .just sold it privately. It set a record for a common Morgan toner.

It was easy to find when I searched it. Wow I agree it’s maybe the greatest toner ever, it has a perfect color progression from top to bottom. The fact that it’s a 67 is important to me as well. To be the greatest ever the grade also needs to be really high How the hell does it not have a Trueview though hahaha

I'm predicting the day like in Star wars in the future mankind will pay for groceries, services, and spaceships or trade with not only collectible coins but also rare earth metals like any niobium tellurium or germanium. The Droid cashier asked what will you be paying with today? I reply we have thrity eight ounces of carbon on the account. I've been buying half dimes, 2¢ pieces and civil war commemoratives that are in the range of 30 to $50 that I plan to clean and coat them with black ruthenium or rhodium to retain their premium collectible value then put these coins in circulation among traders.

"damaged, ...And partially that;s true." . tastes change, and tarnishing cannot be easily undone without permanant damage to luster. Doubt the craze for toning will prevail. Who can say what the tarnished coin will look like in 50 years. Personally i doubt it will get nicer.

So toned coins were not popular back in time. I hope cleaned coins go through the same process. Not harshly cleaned. They look mostly eye appealing.
