The Detroit Pistons have likely been terrible most of your life, despite being one of the more successful franchises in the earlier days. Here's a winning organization fell from grace over 20 years.

I’m a pistons fan and I can say basically every fan has given up. Cade, Ivey and Duran have been solid young players, but for some reason Monty Williams would rather play Kilian Hayes than Ivey and we have traded for and signed every young center that has been a bust in the past 6 years. This team is doomed for like the next 4 years.
@Odysseus1999
@Odysseus1999 6 ай бұрын
The problem with you guys is you’re so young and you don’t have anybody scoring next to Cade. Your front office is just really bad at drafting and making moves. They’ll look like they’ve gotten it together and then the front office delays the rebuild by making a stupid decision. Making dumb draft picks, trading away assets for Blake Griffin or money, hiring and firing head coaches, etc. If you just picked well in the draft and didn’t do so many trades and built a culture around your guys, you’d be okay.
@PTBIC
@PTBIC 6 ай бұрын
Nah the drafting isn’t the issue it’s the free agency and coaching, Troy Weaver makes ZERO real moves in free agency and Monty Williams is just out there coaching like it’s AAU in the long run a few trades will help but rn Weaver and ownership is just watching it happen because weaver didn’t want Monty and the guy who did the owner does not care about the team

In the modern NBA the players have more control than ever as far as where they want to play. This means that cities that most people wants to live in like Detroit, Orlando etc will never be able to attract a top tier free agent and their best players will leave in free agency ASAP or if they stick around for a huge contract then they will force a trade. If you are a fan of a team thats is a city that ballers just dont want to live in the your future is going to be a very rough road.

Yeah that Isiah Thomas game 6 in 1988 is too quickly forgotten by people nowadays. When rewatching the game on ESPN, after the third quarter, IT broke down, and after eventually collecting himself, he said "I'm sorry, I just... I never watched this..." That shit hurt, man.

Idc if anyone thinks I’m old, I don’t remember the first two championships but i was alive and the 2000s weren’t that long ago. Any real basketball fan who is a student of the game, no matter their age has at least watched the 2004-2005 finals just to see the renowned defense of that squad. Hardwood classics has the games in full so there’s no excuse to not know about those teams.

I grew up in Detroit starting watching the NBA in 2002 we had a great team then they were so dominant i had to pick a new team to root for it seemed like they were winning everything then in the late 2000s they did a 360 and have never been the same since it's a shame to since the pistons actually moved to Detroit (instead of way out in Auburn Hills). The little Caesars arena would be absolutely rockin if the pistons had a winning team

While the Pistons have stunk for 14 years, I feel like this doesn't really examine why. What's ironic is that after the Bad Boys era and the Wallaces of the 00's, the Pistons had an identity as a team that played tough defense and found value in players other franchises had given up on (Ben Wallace, Chauncey, etc.). They then spent the rest of the decade drafting big guys that absolutely did not fit that mold: first Darko, then Greg Monroe, then Drummond, with only Drummond being even a competent rim protector. They also had several seasons where they felt like they had to spend money in free agency and ended up drastically overpaying the market to get guys like Josh Smith. Stan Van Gundy took over and prioritized defense, making them competitive at that end, but at the cost of offense and pace, and the team continually signed under-sized shooting guards instead of signing or trading for a pass-first point guard. At the same time, the Pistons for a decade were stuck getting the 8th pick, drafting 7-9 six times between 2010 and 2020: this meant they were consistently getting stuck outside of the top 2-3 prospects and kept drafting players with obvious flaws like non-shooters (Johnson and Hayes) or players with potential but obvious flaws like Knight. Then, after years of drafting guys that had essentially no value after their rookie contracts, they cashed in their draft equity and traded for Griffin, who was always going to be an awkward fit with Drummond. The lack of depth at the wing position meant they really didn't scare anyone, and their offense limped along for two seasons before Griffin got hurt, and they finally decided to tank.
