This week we’re going to review Audient’s new product the “Sono.”
This is a rather wonderful device because it’s an interface geared towards guitar players, and as we say in the United Kingdom it contains a “valve” or as Americans say “tube.”

Hi Friends, today we have a super exciting product that i've been wanting to get my hands on for some time! Audient’s new Sono Audio Interface for guitarists! I've watched a few other reviews on this product and one thing they all have in common is they focus strictly on recording guitars, but the Sono is still an INTERFACE! So we’ve decided to push the Sono to its boundaries, of course I’m going to play Guitar, but we’re also going to record a full song using the Sono's Built-in micpres.

Nice demo. man. I have this and it's great for recording guitar and bass, thats why i got it, the tube really does adds warmth and allows the guitar to sing when it needs. Good work on going through the Two Notes amp simulator. I wasn't too impressed with it at first as whole but the convenience is there when you need especially when you're on the move. The free installed amps it come with are basically a Fender, a Marshall and a decent bass amp with a few cabs, pretty much all you need. The only thing is I can't seem to find out is if the headphone output is good enough for my headphones. I've recently discovered I may need a headphone amplifier for my Beyerdynamic dt900 premium. I bought it a few years ago and I'm not sure if it's the 250 or 600 ohm edition. I did read somewhere that one of the Audient interfaces does have a headphone output which is designed to drive a high OHM pair of headphones but not too sure about the Audient Sono. Headphone amps are quite expensive and with that money I'd rather upgrade my speakers which I should do anyway lol.

Hey Warren. Thanks for the great review. Thinking about getting a first audio interface for guitars and the odd synth. How do you feel the Sono compares with the ID14? Obviously with the Sono you gain all the two notes software, but do you lose anything?

Hi Warren! Love your channel! I am about to setup a home recording studio and am looking at audio interfaces. I plan to record mainly guitars, bass, vocals and program drums. How do you compare the Sono to the IK Multimedia Axe I/O, that you also favorably reviewed? Except for the expandability given with the optical input, both interfaces seem to offer cool tone shaping features for guitar players plus reamping and amp/cab simulation. I am also very interested as how the TwoNotes software compare to the Amplitube 4, tone wise. Finally, would the higher quality (I presume) of the Audient preamps over the IK ones make a real difference in recording vocals (through a condenser mic)? Thank!

Can you daisy chain this to any interface or mixer? Also, if you can, and hook it up to something that has, say 16 tracks or more, does that mean that all 16 tracks have the tube/valve option? That would be pretty rad for being able to run a bunch of tracks through the same tube without having to buy a dozen of them.

Lots of things you can do with the sono that you cant with AXE...the Sono got a Tube preamp with have a warmer sound..the sono can take pedals infront of it..your favorite wah, or overdrive..you can store presets in it and use it live without a computer or a pad as a preamp/amp..And the 2 notes IRs are miles ahead of any VST out there. Ofcourse the sono Preamp converters are way better then the AXE IO..

Hi, I'm not sure if Warren was taking a clean D.I in the video but this is actually possible with Sono. A clean D.I will always come in on Input 11 in your DAW meaning if you want to send it to your favourite amp sim or reamp (use Sono's to-amp output) it through a hardware amp you can! This way you will just have a very good sounding tube front end to your amp sim! Thanks, Andy @Audient

@@Audientworld Thanks for the reply. This is cool to know. I super appreciate the demo for sure. Re-amping is necessary now days, right? @@Producelikeapro Some of the Focusrites have a pair of jack inputs that do this, giving access to the DAC without blocking the other inputs. I bought this audio card 4-5 months ago. I am extremely disappointed from the unit and audient support. I bought this audio card in order to replace my Scarlett 2i2 1rst gen. After I bought it I re-recorded all the rhythmic guitars for 6 metal songs. After that I was trying to figure out the tone of the guitars using vst plugins. I struggled a lot because I noticed that the signal was getting dirty easily with crackles etc. I did an experiment to see if the valve preamp is noisy and the problem comes from there. Well, increasing the gain of the signal at parts where I was recording but I was not playing the guitar I expected to hear noise floor but I found sth else. Just by recording from the valve circuit and even having the output volume of the unit at 0db, I found out that in the track there was recorded whatever was playing in the background e.g. the metronome. I did the same experiment with a backing track. E.g. I have the rhythmic guitars playing and I play the solo and recording in in another track. A part of the rhythmic guitars was recorded in the solo track. It doesn’t matter if I had the volume of the backing track at 0db. This means that all my new recorded rhythmic guitars have had extra noise from the recorded metronome. Loading vst overdrives, distortion and digital amps the noise was exaggerated and I got more noise. I did the same experiment with the Line in inputs and there was not the same problem. This means that recording from the Valve input, which is why I bought the audio card, is not an option for those who want an as silent as possible DI signal. From the audient support through the email they told me that the unit must be defective and that I had to send it to my seller. My seller told me that the unit was ok and refused to do the above experiment even after I asked audient support to tell him about my problem. Audient support told the seller that everything is ok and that probably I am the one who doesn’t know how to optimize my DAW. After that I found the audient community on facebook I made a video of the experiment and asked a question there. Daniel Mills (technical support manager of Audient) answered this: “A very small amount of cross talk is expected in the valve gain due to the gain staging that is used and the fact it is an unbalanced circuit, however, this will typically be buried well in the noise floor of the input and practically inaudible under normal usage. However, if you are normalising this signal so the loudest peak is a 0dBFS then you will of cause hear this alongside the massively amplified noise floor because of the normalision.” What I did in the video was that: I recorded from the valve input to one track with the guitar plugged in but its volume at 0, while having another track and the metronome playing at the backround. I recorded silence. Then I normalized the signal and apart from noise floor you could hear the metronome and the backing track playing. This is for audient normal. But for me and my needs isn’t. This just makes my DI dirtier when I use different vst amps and overdrives. Another problem unrelated to the previous one is that when I plug an instrument to Line In 2 the leveling meters of the audio unit doesn’t respond. To this question Daniel Mills didn’t even bother to respond. Overall this audio unit sucks big time. I have the chance I would replace it with something else. Don’t buy this unit if you really need clean silent DI tracks.

I concur 100%. I remember the first time I heard that song, when I was about 9 or 10, it just blew me away. Cream was marvelous band. I was fortunate enough to see one of their MSG reunion shows back in '05. Not a cheap ticket, but worth every penny. And thankfully, they played "Ulysses" at that show, which I don't think they played at the RAH reunion shows that year, for whatever reason I can't comprehend.

@@Producelikeapro fair enough! The two notes products themselves have saved me ears immensely! And gives me options I just wouldn't have. Still fun to mic up some amps. I personally just don't like the front end /pre amp section of the Sono for guitars..it sounds great on vocals, audient makes great stuff just don't think the tone stack is on par with today's options.
