The telegraph was already invented though, not only the electrical telegraph but the optical telegraph even earlier. OK, I get it, even if there were telegraph lines between New York and Philadelphia and some along the railroad lines that is not true in the Wild West. Still, I think there would be faster means of communication if they would want to use it. Like, hey boy, go to the nearest telegraph station by horse or boat and then send this message to Washington D.C. But it is like nowadays: if a water pipe cracks in the office, you can phone your superiors that it is an emergency, send people to fix it at once. Or, if you want the office flooded for some reason, you can write a report on paper and have it sent to the headquarters the next morning, claiming that this is the official way to notify your superiors about stuff happening in the office:P Sure, this is an exagerration but the point is that I think they could get some faster way to communicate if they really wanted to. But you can always say that the mailboat is the usual way to carry reports and you saw no reason to do it otherwise because of this little island occupation :)

As for the US Invasion of Canada, outside of some old Cold War contingencies, if the US were to invade Canada, a NATO member and also part of the Commonwealth of Nations, it would WWIII, between the US and the rest of the Free World.
@netuddki2009
@netuddki2009 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure about that, I mean take a look at how Turkey, a NATO member took half of Cyprus from Greece, another NATO member, the NATO did nothing. And if this would happen, I'm pretty sure all the NATO members would make up the most brilliant ideas for NOT going over there like hey USA you are NATO and Canada you are NATO as well, you guys sort it out it's not our problem:P Hell, no other NATO members could take on the US, not even the UK, and the other member states wouldn't even wanted to get involved in something big like this. If any country, then it could be Russia or China to start the war for they could not tolerate such an increase of US power and influence like doubling the US size. Of course, THEN the rest of the NATO member states SHOULD join the war too because then it's a NATO member state attacked by a non-NATO member and there is no excuse for that, but... I'm pretty sure most of the member states would simply betray the alliance and wouldn't come to help the US either. I mean, it's the World war III, an all-out nuclear war, and just because the USA is an idiot in this scenario with other regimes involved too which don't give a crap about half of their countries blown up, the rest of the world won't follow suit rather start constructing fallout bunkers for their politicians:P No, I think the only way the European member states would be involved in such a war if they would be directly attacked too because then it doesn't matter anymore.

Actually in the 1920s/30s there was a plan developed by the US to invade Canada (-> War plan Red). It saw the possibility of an armed conflict with the British Empire and attacking Canada would be as a way to cut off the British from valuable resources. The rise of fascism in Germany made this plan obsolete.

don't forget about the German British Rivalry on the World Stage. Britain and France feared a united Germany since it basically had the potential to overcome both of them economically and militarily. With Wilhelm I. and Bismarck around as Chancellor, they didn't want the British to gain a single thing, and while Many Germans live in the US, prussian officers helped to train the Continental Army to form them into an European Style Army and German Volunteers helped the union (there is even a german Version of the Battle Hymn of the Republic for those People) i guess Germany/Prussia hoped to gain a partner Overseas against the British.

They mentioned the Hudsons Bay company a lot and showed Rupert's land, but they (understandably) omitted the kerfuffle of how Canada acquired those lands. When the Hudsons Bay company sold the land to Canada, there were already settlements that were long established by fur traders and local first nations. They had no say in the deal at all, so their solution was to form a provisional government and start a rebellion against Ottawa.

Hilariously the Kaiser probably had more reason to side with the Brits than with America. 1. Wilhelm I was the father of Frederick III 2. Frederick III was Queen Victoria's Son-In-Law via her daughter (Also named Victoria) and at the time of the arbitration they were already married. The fact that this guy was able to not be biased that sense **Chef's kiss**

I think the Kaiser simply thought that Great Britain is the bigger threat, or not threat, but player in world politics than the US and so it's better not to strenghten its prestige any further. Yes, sure, the USA was an enormous economy and military power even back then, but funny enough no European power seen it as a power in world politics. That point of view did not change up until World War I. And even after that war there was a strong isolationist sentiment even in the US. So I guess the Kaiser just thought hey why not give it to the USA, anything, just not to assist giving Great Britain any more land when half of the world is theirs already:P And as for the family relations, well sometimes that mattered in state affairs, mostly during the medieval times, but not much in this era. The king of Romania came from the German royal family during WWI too, still he agreed to attack A-H (and thus Germany as well).

It’s funnier than the moments in “Parks and Recreation” when Leslie Knope has a massive crush on VP Biden. Did research into the 'potatoes out of my pig' quote, it is said to be a case of 'may or may not be true' but it was between Lyman and Charles griffin. also fun fact:the border was decided upon by German emperor Wilheim I and he decided to use the United States favored Haro Strait, well including American and brit diplomats. each side would even get drunk with each other during the joint military occupation, the US also raise the Union Jack on the San Juan Islands actually to this day

"People back then went to the top of hills to watch the war. Can you imagine?". Says it, while running a big KZfaq channel about history. Which, to be honest, is mostly "watching all the wars that happened so far". ;-)

So since there was a mention of the Civil War in this video, have you ever considered listening to and/or reviewing Iced Earth's three-part Battle of Gettysburg series from their "Glorious Burden" album?

5:00 I wish more history games had a realistic simulation of this. EU4 has a cooldown on diplomacy based on distance, but that's about it. At least I've tried the nightmare of moving troops around Russia or Subsaharan Africa in that game. (good provinces, particularly Africa, but they're massive regions and take forever)

I can totally imagine civilians off to the side somewhere just watching people at war with one another. They would probably be making Tik-Tok Videos about it to share with other people. They would probably be the same people that stand too close to the window or even go outside to make videos of tornadoes and other dangerous weather. One of my friends posted a video on Facebook of himself looking out a high-rise window at this waterspout that had made landfall and turned into an F0 or F1 tornado. It was travelling pretty close to the window and halfway through his video the building he was in lost power. I can't tell you how many people commented about how stupid he was standing so close to the glass like that. Those are the same people who would be making Tik-Toks about the war...

I’m sorry but if the us went after Canada…….would be a war of horrors not seen by most, Canada would most likely lose, but the sheer emotional damage, let alone actual damage would cripple the the United States for 100 years after the war, would not be pretty 😅

He is widely agreed upon to be the most useless President in the country's history, if not just straight up the worst of them all. Some like Jackson, Johnson, Pierce or Hoover could certainly apply for being the worst for various reasons but I would personally say that Buchanan was just a complete waste of space who deserved the spot.
