I'm not a big hip-hop fan, but my sister is. She introduced me to Blackalicious right when Blazing Arrow was released, and it blew me away. Years later, when Into The Spider-Verse came out, I didn't recognize any of the big famous songs in it. But then Chemical Calisthenics started playing and there I was again, listening to Blazing Arrow on repeat after the movie. Blackalicious deserves all the success they get.

@Dipsoid
@Dipsoid Жыл бұрын
True, there's a lot of snobbery with hip hop when it comes to rock fans (and probably a healthy dose of racism from some) talking about how "easy" rap is. It's very easy for someone to learn the basics of guitar and play a power chord too. Sure there's a lot of unskilled rappers scoring pop hits with a tired beat and a flow that barely qualifies at rapping, but if you're basing your thoughts on an entire genre from top 40 radio, take a listen to shitty rock radio of the early 2000s and listen to the onslaught of nearly identical pop-punk songs with the same chords and similar melodies and one-note lyrics that a 12-year-old could have written. As with anything in modern music, the barrier to entry is very low, but the ceiling is infinitely high. Not to say that something has to be "hard to play" to be good music anyways, because it shouldn't even matter.
@saveusmilkboy
@saveusmilkboy Жыл бұрын
This is how my bassist friends explained playing the bass guitar to me. When you start, the basics are simple. But as you advance, the curve gets steeper and steeper. The techniques are wilder and more complex, and all of a suddent it is a totally different game You can't get away with downpicking the roots of the chords. Basically, even I can teach you to play the bass like Sid Vicious, but if you want to play like Victor Wooten or Marcus Miller or Flea or Les Claypool... see you in ten years, man, and good luck to you.

It was not a set up that Radcliffe knew the lyrics. He's kind of famous for memorizing rapid fire lyrics -- it's like a hobby for him. Radcliffe recited a Tom Lehrer song (from the early 1960's) on the Graham Norton show, and that off the cuff thing got him cast by Weird Al Yankovic to play him in a movie. I kinda love that strange progression from Tom Lerher -> Blackalicious & 90's Rap -> Weird Al Yankovic. Fascinating video, T1J!

Love Blackalicious. A couple years back, I went to Blazing Arrow to introduce my now-wife to non-pop hip hop. After one song, she asked to see a photo and, sure enough, she had interviewed them years back when she was still a journalist and they visited her hometown on tour. She knew little about them, but in the interview she did some playful freestyling back and forth with Gift of Gab. She has great things to say about them and I'm glad she now has a bit more appreciation for just how dope that experience was.

I think Daniel was leaning into the awkward flow deliberately. It has to be funny for the show since no one other than Dan and the “backing band” (the Roots being real audience, which is what makes this even more wholesome and loving) the real joke. Fallon had a football player do a beastie boys song and it’s the opposite. Football bro is doing karaoke. Radcliffe is doing a bit about how weird it is that he knows obscure hip hop. So the bur doesn’t work if he slays it as a rapper. Other than that you ragnarocked the main point. Respect.

Still love acts like Gift of Gab or MF Doom. I was shocked when I found out about both of them. Love underground/indie rap in general. Some of the best stuff is still there and not just from a technical perspective. Many times lyrical depth and thought is also far more than what you would hear in a group with mainstream success. Acts like Kendrick Lamar brought some of it mainstream, but there is still far more range in topics from daily life to struggles to beauty to - you name it. Songs like Vinnie Paz's Same Story still hit me harder than most other songs because I have a very relatable experience. The stuff really should be more marketable than it is.

Thanks so much for the video and the breakdown. I’m just about 100% physically recovered from a crazy health crisis and just coming to fully grasp now with what I’ve been through. No time to lose. Subscribed.

I found Blackalicious when Nia came out, I was amazed by Gab's lyricism, world play and story telling. I was lucky enough to meet Questlove and gift him my copy of Nia to introduce him to Blackalicious. It is one of the memories I hold dear.

Seeing this has got me all in my feelings. I miss Tim so much, for my money the most under appreciated rapper ever. RIP Gab. ❤️

Man, thanks so much for this episode about Blackalicious! I fell in love with them years ago when they first started getting play down here in Louisiana.... I even did a skateboard video part to AA and it was edited so that the faster the song got, the more hectic and frantic the tricks and editing became. This is a great ode, I kinda live in a bubble when it comes to musicians outside their music, so all this was brand new to me... amazing, and painfully underrated talent. Terrible that Gab passed away so damn young, it's always a shame, but it hits a bit different when that person is in the middle of being prolific in their passion. It's like equal parts sad and appropriate (for lack of a better word) in that old sense "at least he died doing what he loved," though I'm not really a big fan of the latter sentiment. Thanks again for this segment... as an old head, you had me nodding my head in agreement while enlightening me at the same time. Take care and all the best, cheers from the dirty dirty.

Awesome video. It's sad that they never got the recognition I always believed they deserved but I'm glad I got the see them perform the craft at Earthdance. Probably one of the best most energetic concerts I've seen.

Had the pleasure of seeing Blackalicious, DJ Shadow, and the whole Quannum Projects crew in 98 at a small spot in NYC called Wetlands. Got to see Alphabet Aerobics live, and it blew my mind that someone was able to do that.
