My favorite part of the original sketch is when Keenan says, "hey it's 100 floors of frights, they can't all be winners," and gives a sly lingering glance at the camera. Contextualizes the whole thing as a meta commentary on criticisms of SNL.

What I loved about the sketch is how it took a weird aspect of Halloween - that half of it is comprised of genuinely scary shit (the undead, creepy ghost girls, monsters, masked killers), while half of it is comprised of "spooky" things that aren't scary at all but symbolize scariness (black cats, skeletons, jack-o-lanterns) - and played with the intersection of that. David S Pumpkins is both the LEAST scary and MOST scary thing they encounter.

there is also the point that a lot of costumes are movie characters, and not a public domain character like Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, the two most popular costumes in recent years are Harley queen and the clown from IT, and i don't think it is a coincidence that they are clowns, funny things but scary

Ambiguity, and The Unknown, is what David S. Pumpkins represents. Our brains want closure (like when we play a crossword puzzle), and when we don't get it, we are left in a state of uncertainty. It's off-putting. Those with active imaginations, tend to project into the unknowns. Without context, most seem to lose orientation, but still clamour for it. All fears, I believe, stem, from the fear of "not having control". The people on the elevator, have no say. Free will, was removed. It is a linear path, of disappointment. When one begins to accept that disappointment, as that one becomes desensitized, then enculturation takes hold, it becomes a feedback loop of uncertainty. (Enculturation is the process by which people learn the dynamics of their surrounding culture and acquire values and norms appropriate or necessary to that culture and its worldviews.) The linear structure of it, is a giveaway. Someone is afraid of things getting out of line, so they use pressure/force, to attempt to mold it to their vision. Nature usually fosters an environment, where things can flow into, based on the Phi ratio. i.e. Predictions can be made about the size of a forest, based on the measurement between the branching on a single tree. With that limited data set, we don't need, to know every thing in between. With David S. Pumpkins, no predictions seem to help, to orient. He is independent, of our models. We then give up trying to see what's wrong with him, and are left with self examination. Why did we buy into this premise, to begin with? To be presented with the off-putting? The unknown, potentially, scares the pants off of us. ¿Preguntas?

Exactly. I saw this sketch for the first time last year, completely removed from any of the stuff he talked about and while I giggled at the silliness, it was the last bit where he really does scare the hell out of them that made it a favorite. To me he's like the really scary things, the killers that look completely ordinary or maybe just a little weird until they they're not.

An essential part of the gag - as I see it - is that he actually DOES scare them at the end. I mean, a huge part of why I found it hilarious was that it was Tom Hanks. If it was, say 1990s Jim Carrey, or any other notoriously humorous or goofy performer or comedian... it definitely wouldn't have been nearly as funny. That, plus something I always love, which is when some people are the "straight man," seeing it as ridiculous as the audience probably does, while other supporting castare acting as though they're completely familiar and comfortable with this utterly absurd, ad hoc or completely original thing going on; and _we're_ the weird ones, for **not** already being totally familiar with this thing we obviously could never have even heard of before because it was just made up like thirty seconds ago. Something like that.

What made it funny and scary at the same time was how absurd he was and the final way he popped up behind them. It’s the complete unknown as to how weird that was going to get and what all don’t we know about him that makes him frightening. For example the scariest part of 28 Days was that moment he realized the city was completely abandoned and he didn’t know why and he is standing in the middle of an empty city in a hospital gown , no weapons or protection for what ever scared everyone away and you have absolutely no idea what is going to happen next , but know that it’s pretty bad.

Hey @T1J. I believe what most people miss about the original 100 Floors Of Frights skit, with David Pumpkins is the first time the ride guests encounter him he says "How's it hangin'? I'm David Pumpkins and, I'm going to scare the hell out of you." then proceeds not to by dancing around then asking "Any questions." but the elevator doors close before the ride guests can ask and he hasn't scared the hell out of them. The 2nd time he appears he answers a couple questions then does the dance again. By now, the guest riders are fogetting his first statement that he's going to scare the hell out of them. Then on the 99th floor, a gut with a chainsaw appears saying "Arrrrrrrgh!!! I'm crazy for David Pumpkins!!!" and David and the skeletons dance by from left to right. On the 100th floor, it's just the B-Boy skeletons, but where's David Pumpkins? Well, he's about to scare the hell out of the guest ridars and he does 100%. It's like a knock knock joke, you don't get to the punchline after 2, 3 , 4 or even 5 times. On the 100th floor, he scares the hell out of them and that's what completes the skit and makes it so funny. Only a small percentage of viewers get it. And the ones that do, made it go viral. With that being said, here, watch it again: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLlgY9uI09fbpn0.html

Great video ! New subscriber ! 🎉 I agree with your statements but I think you missed something big . That being said I think part of the reason why David Pumpkins is so funny is how it hacks our brains. Everything is on the ride is derivative. In a time of constant sequels , prequels, reboots and such having some NEW is refreshing. The fact that the audience watching is probably having the same experience as the characters in the sketch. It’s so absurd and ridiculous and bizarre that we feel uncomfortable which in itself is scary because we don’t know what it is or how to react and the UNKNOWN is always the scariest thing. The sketch is playing with YOUR Expectations. It’s so random and the punchline at the end is so good with David doing a great jump scare gag and you understand why he is scary because he’s so random and unpredictable and unknown. David Pumpkins dares us with Any Questions as his tag like and he never answers them.

my 2 cents: 1 - Ear Worm/gets stuck in your head music loop (look up the SPACE PANTS sketch which has a similar ear worm track.) 2 - Tom Hanks crazy eyed smile and perfect comedic delivery 3 - The crazy skeleton costumes with the Troll Doll like hair and great dance moves and make up 4 - many times it's the overall combination of many otherwise small things that when put together make up a very memorable sketch.

This is needlessly sentimental and personal, but as a kid growing up without a dad, Tom Hanks was my surrogate dad. I'd watch Big and The Terminal on repeat especially, something about him just clicked in my kid brain. And I really, really like David Pumpkins. I never quite knew why, as I'm an adult now with adult bullshit and too much cynicism. So this was very cathartic and hits home for me. And god I really fucking hope he's not cancelled. I'll be devastated.

Yes! I love you for hyping The Burbs! 💜 Been one of my faves since childhood, but it was always _constantly_ mentioned as one of Hanks' few "embarrassingly bad" films. _Wtf?_ He's hilarious in it! So many quotable lines from that film. The Money Pit is another way too often disrespected Hanks comedy.

Thanks for this. Great breakdown, explanation. I still don't get it, but at least now I better understand. And Tom is a treasure.... he doesn't get it either, but still plays the character because he knows it makes people happy.

On Halloween THIS YEAR, I had the itch to watch David S. Pumpkins. I was high and half-paying attention to my friends, and typed "F Pumpkins" into the KZfaq search bar before hitting enter. KZfaq still knew exactly what I meant: the SNL video was the very first result.

I wouldn't say it has absolutely nothing to do with parody. It's light and fluffy yes but it's also about memes and pop culture references being absolutely everywhere. Without context David S Pumpkins makes as much sense as some guy wearing a goalie mask or a striped suit for a costume.

What made it stick also was he turned out to be genuinely scary at the end by appearing behind them suddenly, which made him seem actually supernatural and creepy. Almost like a Beetlejuice type.

Part of it is watching Tom Hanks having the time of his life doing something genuinely stupid. I think David Pumpkins works on a Halloween level because Halloween is just a huge trainwreck of whatever people can come up with. There’s the genuinely scary stuff which is easy to define and identify, but when you look at “family friendly” non-scary Halloween stuff you can name pictures (black cats, Jack o lanterns, etc) and maybe Charlie Brown or something. It isn’t rife with actual CHARACTERS and details that can be named and referenced. So along comes David S. Pumpkins, goofy and weird Halloween guy that so many people see because SNL gets watched by a ton of people during election years, doing something off the wall and memorable.

The second DSPumpkins was funny because it was the idea that nobody went home from the elevator ride and wanted to spoil DSPumpkins…. Living in the world today? It’s the joke I got a day or two later… unlike the first. But for real.. I had no clue. Honestly. The cartoon wasn’t as good… but returns was great! This video was good man.
