In this episode of Haunted Cosmos, Brian and Ben continue season three by looking at the haunted house phenomenon through the lens of a specific story and with the hope of answering the question: Why are we so interested in haunted houses, and what dangers lie therein?

Here's an idea, why don't y'all consider the classic high back leather chair in front of a fireplace. You can read the stories off of an ipad (or your phone) mounted to an "old leather book" shell for effect. If you have no fireplace, then a tv mounted with a "hearth" shell displaying a fire would be sufficient for effect. Low light, slightly dark background, and the glow of "fire" illuminating two mysterious figures reading and discussing the haunted quarters of the cosmos.

Ephesians 5:11. I remember a certain paranormal ghost show being something I enjoyed watching up until the Holy Spirit convicted me. I understood that contacting "the dead" was to be avoided but after you all mentioned Ephesians, the light bulb got brighter. We should absolutely avoid even watching someone trying to contact supposed spirits of people who have passed on because in that, we are participating with them. That's my conviction at least.

Atchison, Kansas is my town. We knew the Sally House has a reputation for being haunted. I heard that for a while it was like a creepy AirB&B where people go to spend the night in hopes of having a paranormal experience. It’s a regular, kind of run-down looking house in an old neighborhood about 2 blocks from the river, like the guys said.

I once saw an interview of one of the girls who was in the family that had so much trouble in the “conjuring” house. She said that things got much worse in that house after the Warrens conducted their seance in that house. Surprise. That seance let in more evil. This woman seemed very angry about what the warrens did. It could be because of the reality that they did make things worse or it could be that she was angry that the Warrens made money on their story… or a combination of the two. I believe that terrible deaths can open a means for a familiar spirit or spirits to enter into an area and manifest. I also believe that due to the fact so many people are involved in occult experiences and seeking to speak with the dead that some houses do become places where evil familiar spirits reside….mainly because of their occult involvement. Just attempting to speak to the dead gives these evil spirits access to an area. These people who think that they are conjuring the spirits of the dead open the door for the deceiving spirits to enter. “Ghost” hunting seems to be a pastime for many people. It is like a hobby for them. It is sad that people do not instead decide to seek to know the Creator of all things through the word of God. People are made up of spirit, soul, and body. They seek spiritual experiences. Unfortunately, many times the Christian church shuts off all possibility of know THE Father of spirits. God becomes someone far away instead of the realization that the Spirit of the Living God can reside inside the believer and lead them and guide them into all truth as the Lord Jesus promised. The weekly prayer meeting that many churches used to have has all but disappeared. “Praying at all times with all kinds of prayer and supplication in the spirit” is one of the weapons that God gives us with the armor of God. We need to teach people how to continuously grow in fellowship with the Lord so they can continue to grow up spiritually and not stay spiritual babies through their lives.

Excellent point about suffering in this world. I think the false narrative is ubiquitous among paranormal discussions "something tragic happened here and now it's haunted," etc. but yes the curse affects all creation, how could one random tragedy open a place to haunting activity. If that were the criteria, everywhere would be haunted by now

I’ve shared this before and it’s a much more longer and interesting story but the short of it is my first apartment left me feeling attacked every time I engaged in Bible study or prayer. I will have cold spots that would come up randomly and very strange neighbors but it all culminated in one day when I felt attacked I was about to leave and as I stood at the doorway pondering if I should really let this thing rule me, my stereo was on the floor across the room playing Christian worship music from the radio and as soon as it said the name of Jesus the power cord was ripped straight from the back shutting the stereo down. I fled for a while and prayed and came back and prayed that this thing would leave and I had peace after that. That’s the short version but the gist of it.

I understand how comfortable the love seat is, but I also vote for the old set. Part of the uniqueness of your show is the banter back and forth between the two of you (as opposed to single person podcasts). I listen to the dusty tome on patreon when it comes out, but I wait for Haunted Cosmos to be released on KZfaq to watch you both interact with each other. My absolute favorite moments are when one of you makes a comment then side eyes the camera. It draws your audience into the conversation. I will say, I was never a big fan of the white lighting. I vote get more comfy chairs and sit across from each other. However, since I am high in agreeableness and avoid confrontation like the dancing plague of 1518, you should do what makes you comfortable.

You seem to be saying that by being in God’s presence the unredeemed feel like they are in hell. Is that what your meaning? I’ve never heard that idea and it is surely interesting. I don’t know what you do with Jesus parables about the rich man and Lazarus and the words He speaks about throwing the branches into the fire… as of they are separated though… I’m sure you can’t certainly mean that all get to be a part of the new heavens and the new earth. For I cannot imagine the man who r*** a mom, cut off her chest, and burned her alive in Isreal during Oct. 7th will just be welcomed into God’s presence no problem…. Unless he does come to repent and believe Not to mention is God unloving at that point to continue forcing those people into His presence… I don’t deny God is love. I believe it with everything in me. I’m just thinking through your idea

@@Heather.Isaiah43.1 Hi! Thanks so much for the comment. There are many passages which teach that both believers and unbelievers will be raised. In Acts 24:15 Paul says, "There shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked." In Revelation all are raised out of hell/hades/abrahams bosom. I am not a teacher, I am still a student so I encourage you to look into the Orthodox view of the eschaton. It has answered many troubling questions I had as a western Christian. Lots of people think God would be cruel to punish someone for eternity, quite the opposite, they punish themselves and cannot bear the fiery love of God. Jesus died and went to Hades and preached the gospel and rose again, defeating death by death.

Worst-case scenario...it's just a demon." 😈😯While that wasn't exactly what my 8-year-old self wanted to hear, (😂) I ended up owning that phrase every time I thought I saw something move in the dark because I knew Christ was stronger. That is a brilliant insight about how every place has seen human suffering. I think the best ghost stories, the ones that are composed as fiction, tend to have an element of justice. The person who encounters the ghost has to somehow help the victim right that specific injustice, thus freeing the ghost. I realize this isn't the bulk of ghost stories. Maybe it's the ones coming out of a Christian culture.

I really liked the across the table, back lighting look of the previous set. It was unique & a little more groovy spookyish. 🫣 I’m kinda miss seeing the water pitcher/drinking chalice too. 🤭

As to the comments on the set. I hated the old set. But I really liked how you guys were with Right Response on their set. You should do two chairs like that with a cool bookshelf behind you.

I actually don't mind the set. It's very different. It has an antique vibe that goes with the age of some of the stories. It's not as spooky or mysterious as the other one. Maybe you can find some hybrid that makes this setup more mysterious? Like more dramatic lighting, perhaps?

Nope..old format pls...the silhouette with white window gave the perfect ambiance for your tales...love your mugs, but watching the distracted facial expressions when the other is talking is, well, distracting...if you're going to keep this format...I can always just listen thru ear pods..but pls reconsider...thank you.

To ease the visual assault of this awful new set, and the discomfort of having to look directly at both of you, I decided to take a drink of bourbon every time one of you touched your mustache. I go into rehab tomorrow.

I don't mind changing formats, I'd rather see you looking at the camera, but this isn't it. Check Sunday Cool's NAB - individual shots, or perhaps two chairs in almost a forum type setting would work WAY better.
