The conversation between Jim Garner and Jack Elam is a perfect illustration of why Garner was so widely popular as a star. A combination of friendliness, intelligence, humor and wisdom. How I'd have loved to have had a conversation with him.

James Garner is a classic, in the same vein as the likes of Jimmy Stewart. An elegant man, from a more civilized age. Actors and actresses these days feel like children compared to the greats of old.

So, I saw it the first three times in one day (at 8 or 9yrs old). I still watch it annually (or maybe more) because it is just too good not to. That adds up to 50+ times I have seen this movie and I do not regret a single watch. To the whole cast and crew I say thank you for making one of the greatest comedies ever

Bruce Dern had a great line in Down periscope. " I don't think it's good policy for the navy to turn over a billion dollar's worth of equipment to a man who has welcome abroad tattooed on his penis ".

Best western spoof and one of the funniest movies, period. Always a pleasure to watch James Garner, but the whole cast here was exquisite--and this was the first time i'd ever seen Jack Elam as a nice (and very funny) guy. And Bruce Dern! "Do I have to listen to him? He ain't nothing but the town character!" Has anyone posted the scene featuring Garner and Harry Morgan where they discuss the "departing" of Prudie's mother? Priceless stuff.
