It is one of 85, and more like one in a million for Green Mountain Falls.
Nestled high within the freshly designed Red Butte Recreational Area, the James Turrell Green Mountain Falls Skyspace was the crown jewel of this year’s Green Box Arts Festival, an annual celebration of international arts that concluded its 14th season in July.
Alongside an abundance of performances, children’s workshops, educational events and artist residencies, each festival brings renowned installation artists to the 650-person hamlet in El Paso and Teller counties. Past presenters who have incorporated work into Green Mountain Falls' appropriately named local ecology include Patrick Dougherty and Bruce Munro.
2022’s festivities welcomed the Green Mountain Falls Skyspace, one of 85 permanent Skyspace structures across the globe. Each Skyspace - a concept creation of North American multi-medium artist James Turrell - coalesces sensory illumination, deprivation, LED lighting and natural materials within a unique, built environment.
