A Large Model Paddle Steamer Engine - In The Workshop - My good friend Chris Lockwood at 21st Century Steam Company (www.21stcsc.co.uk) called in to see me a while ago and brought this engine with him. I thought it was a good idea to feature it on a video, so here it it along with some other interesting items at the end of the video................................ / keithappleton

When some of the Chinese Manufacturer started producing steam models they were absolute junk, but they learn very fast and now some of there stuff if absolutely excellent. I have bought a two cylinder engine from one it is in the mail and am bidding on another.

The tooling artifacts on some of those pieces almost leads me to believe they were 3D printed and sintered brass instead of CNC machined. The way the bevels look on the main uprights holding the bearings, like they were cast, but still have artifacts from the stepper motors in the printer. That being said, still a beautiful piece of machinery.

Hi Keith; I realize that this engine runs, and runs well, but to me it looks more like a work of art than a working engine. The parts are absolutely beautiful. If I owned it, I would almost be afraid to run it, because I wouldn't want to get it all oily. I, am in agreement with you, hex head bolts would look better on a steam engine. The Allen head cap screws and the polished brass with no paint, look too modern to give it that nostalgic look of most steam engines. These thoughts, however; are just my way of thinking. Very nice video as usual.

(only just found the video): The engine in the video is identical to one described in the German booklet "dampf17" (steam 17) published by Neckar Verlag. According to the book, it was intended as an engine for a paddle steamer. An acquaintance of mine made one of these in the 1990s. The curious noise may come from the fact that it is a uniflow engine (that is, if the makers in China kept close to the drawings in the booklet). Edit: there is a video here on youtube labelled "transparente Dampfmaschine" where someone has made a perspex version of the machine.

I think I would actually prefer those Allen head bolts over ordinary cross heads everywhere

I'll assume the complaint is that they are too modern and not "period correct"

I agree, but I would prefer hex head screws to either Allen heads or cross head screws.

For the looks, i like studs and nuts. For working engines i'd rather have allen head bolts (internal metric hex.) Just so much less of a hassle to work with

If this was made from steel, iron and gunmetal instead of brass, and the Allen bolts replaced with studs, nuts and taper pins, I'm certain it would be a wonderful model suitable to drive a very large model boat.

My 1939 Mamod SC3 runs very well even though it has brass moving parts, it does have a displacement lubricator which were stopped after WW2 as none of my other Mamod's have one but one of my SEL's does and the Wilesco's do although the little oil cup on my quite expensive Wilesco D11 was a little disappointing with my other Wilesco's the cheaper models having full on displacements :( I prefer the chromed boilers and pipework on the Wilesco's, just look so nice all gleamy and clean, my Mamod's tarnish only on days ending in "y" and its bloody annoying as I think a steam engine should look clean and presentable when not in use imho
