When you say that about literally every crime, the statement becomes meaningless. It's like yall can't think past "kill em or throw em away" for any crime above theft. Yes I agree the man is terrible but far from the worst out there and personally I'd rather not pay for all of his meals and medical care while he stays in prison for life. Yes taxes pay for those and yes I pay my taxes.

@@onetiredempath I know Sweden is a much smaller place, but I do think having a look at their policies on rehabilitation and incorporating them into our current system might be possible. People reoffend because prison is just a babysitting service instead of rehabilitation like it was meant to be. They sit there and think about ways they could have done it and such instead of being put to some kind of rewarding work and therapy.

They were not even college students, but minors in high school. If there had to be a school trip, as a parent, I'd insist on an educational place, not a tourist town where there isn't much to do but drink, gamble, and lie on the beach.

I grew up there in the same circles and i'm pretty sure his dad was mixed up in criminal activities and corruption. No doubt involving cocaine. This kid was way too used to his lifestyle of doing whatever he wanted and scamming everyone. Remember how he fled to Thailand and just started a pimping business. He was used to the underworld activities and that had to start at home.

my father used to take me gambling when I was only 14 and that’s illegal in the US and he was the best guy ever. He was a fireman, a family man, married for 54 years when he died and never caused anyone any harm in his life.

@@AKayfabe while I’m sure there are exceptions like in your case but generally it is not a good idea to introduce kids to gambling. Kid’s brains are still forming as teenagers and it puts the kid at risk for gambling addiction. It also fosters unhealthy thrill seeking behavior. That all said maybe your family is different and you had the maturity to be able to handle those kinds of environments but as far as average kids go taking them gambling isn’t a good idea. Your dad may have taken you gambling but I imagine he instilled good morals as well and was a healthy role model. My guess is Joran’s dad was not a good role model and certainly didn’t instill good ethics on his son.

Well he wasn't a local he was a Dutch national who happened to live in Aruba. He had a reputation for being a big gambler at the casino's and for seeking out tourists for his own sick sexual gratifications. It's because of this that I totally believe that Natalee Holloway was not the first one to be attacked or killed by this creature.

He won't be out anytime that's for sure, he still serving his 28 years, plus another 20 years, for blackmailing, and 18 years for trafficking cocaine in prison, in my estimation, if he's still around, he won't be released until he's well into his eighties which serves Joran right and will hopefully give Natalee's family some closure, just a shame that they couldn't lay her to rest. RIP Natalee.☹

As a Dutchie, this brought back so many memories. This story dominated the news for ages, spouted debates, memes, documentaries, and international issues regarding the autonomy and police force of our overseas territories. Maybe an idea for another video: the crime reporter who dug into this story (and who ultimately pretty much solved it) Peter R. De Vries, was shot and killed in 2021. He has worked many high profile Dutch cases, like the 1983 kidnapping of Freddy Heineken (yes, thát Heineken), the exoneration of two men who were wrongfully convicted for the murder of a 23-year-old woman in 1994 and the eventual discovery of DNA that lead to the real killer, and for uncovering that the new fiancé of Dutch Prince Friso had ties to a few of the biggest names in Dutch organized crime, causing Friso to lose his claim to the throne and his royal title after he went through with the wedding.

Hey Jiles, I’m an Aruban living abroad for many many years now, but this has been the best retelling of this case I’ve ever heard. You got all of the facts right and really highlighted how much of a conman Joran really is. One thing to note: while the authorities admittedly were slow to take her disappearance seriously, once they did, they never relented. It’s been one of the most expensive investigations to date on the island. Also, once the Aruban community became aware of her disappearance, there were hundreds of people volunteering in searches for her around the island. Aruba is a relatively safe island so it was awful to have this happen. Another note, lots of us locals are absolutely convinced Joran’s dad/someone else was somehow involved in the cover up. There is NO way Natalee’s body would have gone out to see in the manner that Joran had described. For her body to be picked up by the currents he would have needed to be a LOT further out to see than just being knee deep in the water. So he must have had a boat and some help. His father was also adamant that he not talk to the police. In the end, nothing will bring Natalee and Stephany back, such a shame their lives were lost in such a horrible way. Joran is a true monster. Take care Jiles and thanks again🍀

I have also never believed she was put in the ocean. I think either his family/friends helped dispose of her and he’s covering for them or, she is buried somewhere. He knows if she was dug up, the shattered bones would tell the real story. Plus, keeping the body is a way for narcissist killers to continue to keep control over the victim and family. He won’t give her up unless he gets something that is worth more than that control.

I couldn't imagine this happening to a loved one and then the criminal got to go on for years just blabbering and lying about the murder of your loved one. Even scamming money out of different people and the mom of the victim over false confessions.. All not leading to an arrest or solving the case.. Until way later and the monster kills another victim.. What a horrible case. That family suffered so much pain and torment.. It's awful

When my high school class went on trips, we were not allowed to leave the hotel. We were in countries where we could legally drink but it was made clear we were not allowed to. The one guy who did got his flight changed and he and his parent were sent home the next day. While I believe Van Dee Sloot is totally to blame for her death, I feel like the school should also be held accountable for allowing students to run around at all hours of the night. They had no security and no safety plan for those students so it was a matter of time for one of them to end up in a dangerous situation.

Nice coverage Jiles. One of the most important moments in the Holloway case wasn't covered though. Peter R de Vries and a "friend" of Joran did an undercover operation where Joran(on a spy cam) confessed in great detail that he did kill Natalee.

It's really not that bad a place. Even things like getting mugged are not really a worry and few places can say that. Sure there is corruption, cocaine, theft and all that but it does not mean you are not safe there. This assclown Joran gave Aruba a bad reputation that' s all. I grew up in exactly the same school, hotels, and social circles as this guy and i assure you it's a great place to grow up. But he's just a psycho POS you know....they could be anywhere and that is what they do regardless of their environment.

What cracks ne up is he says 2 robbers are holding a girl hostage in his room demanding money, and not only do the allow him to just leave "to go to an ATM", but once hes safely out of the room, he goes to get them money instrad of alerting law enforcement to get the robbers arrested, save the girl, potentially save himself, and therefore being able to keep his money on top of it??? Wow, just wow.

I was a travel agent in the early 90s and I did a lot of traveling and partying in Mexico to make a Grand Cayman. I was very lucky at nothing like this happened to me. I was naïve as many young women or especially when they’re drunk 😢

I've seen this case covered elsewhere before. Hopefully when he starts serving his U.S. sentence, he'll have a very friendly cellmate who will teach him about consent. It's disgusting that any country has a statute of limitations for murder.

Something interesting about this case. I'd totally forgotten about Joran, but when the photo of Natalie popped up I remembered her & the rest of the case immediately. Usually it's always the Killer that people remember!! I'll definitely say I think you're spot on though. Kid was a big lad, had easy access to his prey. Thankfully it seems this guy wasn't the brightest.

Omg this brought back a buried memory. I remember as a very young child hearing my mom talk about this case when the news about natalie first came out. Since i was so young it was the first time I sort of conceptualized the existence of murder, and the name "van der sloot" stuck in my mind. it scared me for weeks realizing people were capable of killing each other. somehow completely missed the 2010 murder years later and completely forgot about it until now. interesting to finally hear the full story

I am from the Netherlands and i was obsessed with this case at the time. The news was on the radio while i was at work and right after the report they put up this new song: September - Cry for you and well it made me cry for her just listening to the lyrics. Now these 2 are forever connected to eachother. Such a sweet looking girl she was and my age as well, maybe that's another reason it stuck with me. The van der Sloot family never was populair here. Thankfully he is in one of the worst prisons in the world.

We all knew he was guilty. Without his father's money, he's nothing. Considering he was flat broke he's figuring that he will get fed, a bed to sleep on and free medical care. Again it's all about him. He doesn't care about the two women he killed. He's such a bad actor.

As a Belgian I followed the case at the time it had just happened. We were such fans of Peter R. de Vries, a crime reporter who was instrumental in getting Joran arrested. He was shot a few years ago. Such a loss. I do hope he is mentioned in this episode! Now you are living in The Netherlands, it would be such a shame not to.

Funny thing in this case "Johann van der Smut", a.k.a. Goldmember, was a parody of this monster. Because at that time... this looked to be a bit harsh in hindsight because Joran van der Sloot's the real Dutch villain.

That's pretty wild, but it has to be a coincidence. Because "Goldmember" came out in 2002, the events of this case took place 3 years later in 2005, and van der Sloot wasn't arrested until 2010.

This comment sent me down a googling rabbit hole, I’m back to share what I’ve learned! Turns out Johan is a very common Dutch name, and van der ___ is an incredibly common prefix to Dutch surnames. There’s a Dutch footballer w the surname Van der Moot and a famous Dutch filmmaker named Johan van der Keuken. So when coming up with a name for a Dutch supervillain in a comedic movie, Johan van der Smut definitely fits. He wasn’t a parody of Johan van der Sloot due to the film release being a couple of years before this, however, definitely an incredibly interesting coincidence.

The Dutch journalist Peter de Vries ensured that this story stayed alive in the Netherlands and did everything he could to get him in prison. On television we saw the undercover action where he told how he killed Natelie and what he did with her body. Unfortunately, this journalist was murdered for the work he did. The Netherlands is ashamed of Joran. It's unbelievable that he was able to walk and travel freely.
