From your videos, I can tell that you don't wilt in the rain and wind, which is a good thing. Given that this is an El Nino year, here on the East Coast we are already experiencing a fair amount of rain and, farther north, a good bit of snow. As you probably know, this is a more humid region of the country than most places in the West -- but then you are from Oregon, so that will serve you well! A couple of suggestions for you, if you have time before you head to Georgia: (1) Take a bit of time to research the trees, flowers and animals you will see from Georgia to Maine -- and how they will change with the seasons and the states. (2) Similarly, if you have any interest in history, it might be fun to look up the history you will be walking through. You will be walking through territory that was once the home of groups like the Cherokee, Iroquois, Abenaki and others, so it's cool to see the mountains through their eyes. Plus, you will be walking through some Civil War battlefields as you move north through the Mid-Atlantic area, and if you know what to look for, the signs are still there, even in the woods. All of this will help you discern the differences and details, so that you aren't just seeing a green tunnel for miles and miles.

Thru hiking the AT is a great adventure.The better you prepare, the easier the first 500 miles will be. Treat all of your outer clothing and gear with Permethrin to protect yourself from ticks. There are 9 tick diseases along the AT. Six years ago, my wife and 7 others in our small area died from tick diseases. Carry an SOL Heetsheet Emergency Blanket. It is bigger, tougher, and quieter than mylar emergency blankets. You may need it to help you be warm at night. Lay it on top of your sleeping pad to reflect heat back up to you. It is reusable.
