So what exactly happens during a gouache study session (and why?). In this video I will be showing my entire process from initial idea, value study, color concept sketch and then final study. It's not really a tutorial, but rather a way for me to share my authentic study experience. Hang out with me while you work on something and we will be painting buddies today :) #gouache

When I turn on KZfaq I look first for a new video from you. I love everything you do. Scotland has always fascinated me and because I can’t physically get there, you take me there on your adventures outside. You have also helped me to plan out my sketches and paintings better. And you’re helping me so much in learning gouache. Sorry this was so long. Please keep the videos coming, short or long doesn’t matter.

That’s the great thing about gouache… you can regain the light way more easily than with watercolour. It’s really helpful, listening to your thoughts as you go through the paintings/drawings. It’s also nice hearing the normal chit chat of a lovely couple. Especially given all the awful things going on in the world coming to light. On the whole, educational and uplifting. Thankyou ✨🫶🏻✨

I just discovered your channel and really enjoyed watching this video. Coincidentally I just picked up a package of Tombow greyscale markers for about 3 pounds at our local dollar store. I’m not sure why they were so cheap and how they suddenly appeared at our store very fortuitous with your video discovery. It is very good how you’ve gone from a greyscale study to showing how you apply those principles in your painting. I appreciate the intellectual approach to your process and artwork.

🙏 I really enjoyed this longer video... Both times! First view was watching and listening to learn about the painting process. The second view today was just listening, whilst I colour swatched new shin han gouache... Its a new medium to me and I'm loving it, so thanks for the recommendation (from previous vids) and of course the process insights, hints, tips and company... No doubt I will return to this share/little online painting convention 😁

Thank you, Sarah!! Old gnarly trees are my absolute favorite… well, trees of any kind, really. This was so informative and interesting to me! I just basically sit down, do my sketch and paint! If I did that much thinking, my head would explode 😂 I’ve never been formally taught and I see vast improvement in my painting, which makes me happy. At my age, I’m not looking for anything more than improvement. My medium is watercolor, but I’m experimenting with gouache, which is fun. Been watching your channel for years! Thanks, again!

I really enjoy listening to you while I work on something of my own. Today it was a splodge and scribble watercolor seascape. (I borrowed the name from Helen Cryer but actually first learned this technique doing urban sketching with Taria's Sketchy Adventures. I'm really enjoying just splashing the watercolor on where I think it should go and then tightening things up a bit with ink later. It's much freer than my old way of pencil first then ink and watercolor, in a tight staying in the lines kind of way. It felt like coloring in lol. This way there's no pencil, just my number 12 brush and some paint and I'll figure out the rest later. Just on a side note. I know you like hobbit houses and the "Living big in a tiny house" youtube channel had a walkthrough of the big hobbit house yesterday. They went through how it was built, the scale of it and how they furnished it. I'd live in it 😄

I’m glad that you told how you feel like your brain is fried after painting 😅 not glad that it happens to you though. Due to my health condition I get tired a lot quicker than others, so I find it a relief in a way that healthy people and even professionals get that as well after painting. I guess it makes me feel more normal. Although i’m sure my sessions are way shorter

Funny you should ask what we're working on... I began what was supposed to be a "pencil & wash" of Dunnotar (from my trip there 15 years ago-I live in NY), but I always end up overworking it to the point that the pencil gets covered too much. TOTALLY did it again. Not to mention, although I sketched it a couple of weeks ago, I'm home with a fever right now and pulled it out for something to do. TIP OF THE DAY... Don't plan on painting a 'masterpiece' when you have a fever. This has gone into the, "Oh well-at least I got in more practice" category.

I could write a book about this episode 😂 1st thank you for the longer full process video! They are so helpful & fun to watch. You’ve inspired me to really start working on value thumbnails first, I’m always so inpatient & pass up that step & find myself lost in my painting later when it looks flat & I’m tryin fix it. I’m working on finishing a sketchbook painting of a double waterfall I didn’t finish on my last hike. Loved the chit chat too, my hubby & I have played D&D for 40 years. Met online on a gaming website I ran. The Die 20 (d20) table top system revolutionized the online gaming world. Monks are BA, one of my fav characters was a monk. Hubby is also playing Boulders Gate. I feel like we’re soulmates as we hav so many mutual hobbies 😂😅 Cheers 🍻

Oooh I LOVE that! So cool that you share the entire process, that is very very helpful, I love your calm but concise style of explaining and I can learn such a lot😘 Also besides the "painterly learnings" I always really appreciate there is an other part... Sometimes when I only see people's short videos I can't really estimate how long it really took them to finish what they show and what steps that included. That then makes me feel like my process is sooo slow and I neever get to the end. I know we should not compare but I still feel the need to get quicker in what I do... So thank you for showing in this one that you too take your time! That should be a good reminder 🙃

I saw a video recently where you talked about using watercolor pencils in the cold/snow and was wondering if you've tried the caran cache neocolor 1 &2? The neocolor 2's a pretty much qouache and you need such very little water to activate and the neocolor 1, are water resistant, but can be layered on top of the 2's. It's a pretty amazing medium, especially for those who love gouache and want a portable solution.

Working on twilight from a Hawaiian mountain/ocean photo. First round has some interest but it is more help to try again. Using watercolor. My brother-in-law is supposed to send me photos from a recent trip to Big Bend, hope he doesn’t forget.

I like this type of video you gave alot of helpful techniques of layering, especially for new artist.. have you ever thought of making homemade books of your paintings like just hole punching three holes use twine and wrap then sell them for a small amount you might be surprised how many people would like those" little booklets" of your paintings even if you dont think much of them..its a way of getting your art to people that love your creative pieces but dont have wall space or alot of money to purschase your lovely wall art..💙✍👩‍🎨🎨🇺🇲🇨🇦💙
