4 losses is the 2nd fewest losses ever to win the cup. The domination to mow down every series was unbelievable. He gave up 3 goals only twice the entire playoffs. Every other game was 2 or less that he gave up. No 4 goal games. Unreal. Never seen anything like it.

Billy Smith’s 1983 finals performance is insane. The 83 Oilers led the league in goals w 5.3 per game in the regular season, and in the playoffs upped that to an insane 6.16 gpg before the finals. What did Billy Smith do? Oh just sweep them with a 0.953 sv%, allow just 6 goals against the Oilers, and held Messier and Coffey to 1 point each in the series. Fucking *insane*

@@a_coleman11 we also can't ignore how many NHL goalies have said its far harder to make big/timely saves when you're only facing 15-20 shots max most nights. Kevin Weekes always says Marty was by far the most mentally strong & focused goalie, he could go 2 periods without a shot, then face a breakaway from the opposing teams best players while still making them look like idiots. His finals against Detroit in 95 was insane as well. Only gave up 7 goals in 4 games, 3 of which were even strength. Federov had 3 in that series if I'm not mistaken. That Detroit team was unreal, not sure how Marty never gets credit, yet Matt fucking Murray gets credit for back to back cups with the Pens while he in reality got carried by a good team, now look at him. Could never say the same for Marty, idc if he had a solid defense, he was the backbone of the franchise muchhh longer than said "defense" was.

He never got enough recognition for that run imo. The Coyotes should have never made it to the CF, their offence had less expected goals than their opponents in every single game bar one in their entire run, but Smith was saving a whole goal above expected per game on average (3x more than Quick!). It's truly one of the biggest one man carry playoff runs ever.

The starter at the start of the 1997-98 season was Bill Ranford. He strained his groin in the second period of the first game of the season. That gave Olaf Kolzig the starting job and he never gave it back. Kolzig carried The Capitals to The Stanley Cup Final in a Cinderella run.

One other note on the Islanders: Chico Resch in 1975. Like Murray, he hadn't reached rookie status (he finished 2nd in the Calder the next year-to Bryan Trottier), and he was the man in goal for the Islanders' Cinderella run. One thing about Osgood & the Islanders. They picked him up, I think on waivers, right before the season began. That was right after they had acquired Yashin & Peca and it was going to be their redemption season after missing the playoffs for years, but for all the publicity those trades got, it was Osgood who got them into the playoffs. No Osgood, they miss. He had an excellent season for them, and was good in a tough 7-game playoff loss to the Leafs. So Osgood wasn't just a guy who got lucky in Detroit. He was a good goalie throughout his career.

I'm not decrying Quicks run because it was excellent on a decent Kings team that got hot at the right time but I'd pick Thomas's run as better. In 20 games Quick only faced 30+ shots on four occasions to Thomas's 17 from 25. He had 6 games facing less than 20 to only 1 for Thomas (There are other reasons but Quick was definitely surrounded by a well drilled defence) Ironically both Quick and Thomas's legends are made in there series against Vancouver where they both outgoaled Luongo.

I need to mention Mike Liut in 1986. Now it wasn´t a long run but lot of what ifs. He had 5-2-0 and .938 with Whalers. Now what many people don´t remember Liut got injured during third game against Montreal. Missed almost three games due to knee injury. Weeks replaced him and had 1-2-0 .875. Liut came back in 6th game with shutout. 7th game was close but Claude Lemieux happened. Now who knows if Liut stays healthy whole series. Maybe Whalers actually goes to conference finals. Does that bring hope to Hartford. And obviously Roy, Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe does not happen that year. But obviously what ifs. :)

Not seeing Belfour in either 99 or 00 is kind of upsetting since they were left of the list, he backstopped the team to consecutive cup runs going 16-7 and 14-9 with .931 and .930, winning 1 of 2. Also no Bulin Wall shout out for 2004 is sad too since he out played Kipper in the final and won the cup, and posted better W% and SV% through the playoffs. Solid list though and can't really complain about the guys you picked, although I do think Roloson's run with the Wild in 2003 was better than his run in 06 with the Oil. But you rightfully have J.S. for 03 as the Ducks really didn't have any business getting out of the West without him. Chris Osgood is a fantastic goaltender and it’s a shame that he played with so much talent most of his career because everyone kinda acted like because he played with Lidstrom and Chelios and Stuart and Murphy and Fetisov and Rafalski all the great defensemen that played on those teams that they could’ve stuck any goaltender back there and would’ve won with them, but those of us who watched him knew he was as good as any of his peers at times. I think because he was so soft-spoken compared to goalies like Roy and Brodeur and Hasek that maybe he wasn’t noticed as much in terms of the press and such as well. But honestly when he was on he could, and did, go toe to toe with most of them.

Bob had an off night and the cats hit some iron but possibly this is where they get derailed.. Vegas doesn't beat u with overwhelming talent or HASEK level goaltending they just beat u.

I don't think there's any question that the Blues miss the playoff in 2019 without Binnington. Allen was such a headcase that year. Once he was made the backup, Jake played much better.

Maybe it's rose tinted... but Arturs Irbe was a kick ass goalie that was cup caliber.

Osgood and Cujo both deserve to be in the hall, it's a shame that they're not.

Pelle Lindbergh was an amazing GK.ASG in 1983, 1984, and 1985.40 wins in 1984-1985. That season, The Flyers went to The Stanley Cup Final and lost to The Oilers. But on Nov. 10, 1985, Lindbergh was driving drunk and crashed his Porsche 911 slant nose against a stone wall. Two passengers were seriously injured. They lived. Lindbergh was declared brain dead and died the next day. Lindbergh's death is what opened the door for the legend that is Hextall.

Friendly reminder that Chicago had both Belfour and Hasek at one point.
