Malvern is home to Comeng Z3 high floor trams and Siemens Combino D1 trams. Malvern Tram Depot runs Melbourne Tram Routes 5, 6, 16, 58 and 72. The video looks at the overall depot setup and other bits of information.

I remember when the "bang road" was just a single track and probably not used, and it turned into the rear of South Shed. In those days the public could walk between the North and South sheds. There were also a number of preserved trams at the rear of South Shed, now at the Hawthorn tram depot museum. There is or was a building in a side street (Stanhope) which was connected to the tramways. I can't remember if it was for the union or the tramways band. Thank you for showing.

The Z class must be getting close to retirement, I like their distinctive hum when powering up. Great clip and good info Brenden, you should hit Yarra Trams up for a shed tour, be nice to have a gander inside and see the maintenance and cleaning being performed. Nice work Brenden!

They are planig a F Clsss tram that will take the place of the Z Class trams. But this won't ne until 2030 or later. By the way many older W Class trams where for 60 years on daily services.

@@dieseldavetrains8988 I think z3 will retire in 2025 or later well they extended the life of z class trams (also z3 149 got scrapped for what ever reason)

Great Video. The north shed was built a fews years later after the Malvern Tramway Trust started services along Glenferrie Road from Malvern road to Kew.

Very interesting. My father worked as a conductor, and later driver, there in the 60s and 70s and my mother as a conductoress in the 60s. My god father also worked there as a driver and driver trainer until his retirement in the early 2000s. We lived around the corner from it, off Wattletree Rd, in a house that no longer exists, cleared to make way for the big shopping centre built there.

I was down there a few days ago, and saw a e class testing down glenferrie road towards Dandenong road, weird seeing it down there. Nice footage!

@@Schony747 From memory E class are supposed to start public operations on route 58 in October 2021. When do you expect they may commence on route 6?

@The train set man A few months ago when track relaying occurred east of St Kilda Rd on route 6, that additonal power was installed in the roadway between the two tracks along at least part of High St, Prahran. Apparently this is a necessary precondition for E/E2 class operation.

They are planing a new type of tram for Melbourne - the F Class. This new Class of trams are planed to take the role of the Z Class trams and maybe replace the A Class trams. The new F Class lokes at to lot like the E Class but it shoud be cheaper to build as the E Class.

Interesting to see that there are only 5 roads in the south (old) shed: in my day it had 6. And we used to call the sheds “old” and “new”: it was simpler!

Brenden, great video. At busier junctions or pouints where one driver 'takes' another, given no run numbers have been displayed for many years on the front and rear of trams, how do drivers know which tram is 'theirs', especially if there's late running?

Drivers ask each other the run and table number to confirm the correct run.
