Unreal, UT99, UT2003, UT2004, UT3 became part of my life. The whole mechanics, visuals and overall fun of the game still holds to this day for me. I never liked all the crazy mods but some out there looked promising. Thank you for this in depth view of Unreal Tournament. The game that put Unreal engine on the map and now how Epic wants to get rid of UT from history is a slap to themselves and to us who loved this game. Unreal forever!

R.I.P to the Unreal franchise. Angry that Epic is choosing to pull the plug on the series, despite the very promising success a new instalment could have so long as the game saw some love from it's developers. UT2004 had a lot to offer, more than most games nowadays - just hope Epic find it within themselves to see the beauty of that game and bring servers back online. UT deserves developers. Give the IP to 1047 Games if Epic can't be bothered to continue supporting it.

If you sail the seven seas you can find a copy of Unreal Anthology (Unreal, Unreal 2, UT99, UT04) on an "Internet Archive" if you get my drift.

The modding community is still alive in UT2004, speaking of whom I once actually knew and played alongside with some of the people that modded the game to hell and back for over a decade, roughly. When .:..: was helping create Half Life mods with weapons and the NPCs and playable vehicles as to port it from Unreal I to U2K4, it was really spectacular. He also worked on porting Doom levels and modded in weapons and such to it as well, with co-op campaigns from Unreal Gold, Wolfenstein and other such things. He was usually around the servers Tony's Unreal Realm (TUR) and DJ's Mega-server way back then. It was also combined into an RPG which had the difficulty scale on your character with more enemies each particular map. It was INCREDIBLY popular, especially when you combine it all into Invasion, it was just incredibly fun with so many people playing. I've known and played alongside the guys who devved the Command & Skaarj replication of Command & Conquer on the mods and it was sort of the same people, where you can effectively play Unreal Tournament C&C with all the different factions of the game's lore. Took part in its suggestive development tracks too when it was first released. Tony who owns TUR really got that effectively produced and up to date with .:..:, Leon and some other fellas who's names I can't remember now. I think Freeman who owns the Black Mesa Server was definitely involved in it, too. Just type UT2004 CNS and you'll find videos about it in the search bar. There was also a C&C Renegade mod that was replicating its multiplayer with active base building in an RTS in combo with an FPS. But that project was cancelled. You could physically commit a whole hour long video to just about mods for Unreal Tournament 2004 that you still won't be covering the huge mountain that it's basically created because there's a lot of deep history behind it. Like, Rocket League WAS directly created and inspired from CarBall; another very popular UT2004 mod as its origin story. This video brings me back a decade and a half, really enjoyed it. UT is and always will be a special game.

I'm so glad that you finally covered UT 2004. It's the greatest first person shooter of all-time, with that lovely old-school gameplay, a ton of content, great mod support, and a lot of customization. There were things you forgot to mention though, such as the music player, widescreen fix, and the classic rocket launcher found in the UT Classic mutator. Incase you didn't know, there's a mod that brought Unreal 1's single player and weapons into UT 2004. There's also Old Skool Monsta Toolz which is another single player mod for the game. The latest version of it has issues, so I recommend getting version 1.4. I've been trying to find the Unreal Championship weapons mutator for UT 2004. Where did you get the mod?

I'm one of the freaks that prefer 2003 over 2004. Boost dodging was what made the game fun for me, being able to freely fly across the map at will. I guess that's why I ended up loving Tribes later on I suppose. Funny how Tribes embraced the movement bug that enabled skiing, where Epic squashed boost dodging that elevated the skill ceiling. UT2004 was fine, but I feel like it tried too many things at once. It ironically ended up feeling more like a tech demo than 2003.

Unreal tournament reminds me long Quake 3 team arena. Idk why I remember G4 tv, when I was young, had programs where they held tournaments with various pro gamer teams for Unreal Tournament 4 and Mech Warrior. It played out like modern MLG commentary just on a tv program. Good times.

You forgot to mention that Epic re-released a remastered version for free on the epic game store a few years ago just called unreal tournament. I don't know if it is still up, I played it for a bit but it was missing ALL of the bonus stuff, literally just the base game and nothing else, and no mod support... but it worked on DX11, so there is that I guess

The final fight in the campaign of 2004 is fine, the map isn't too large. If you play on Skilled or above then you'll see that it's a tactical match of collecting the power-ups before the enemy and denying them to him, because otherwise he will kick your ass. You have learn how to run around the map and reach each power-up just a moment before it respawns. It's a 1v1 that's worthy of being called a boss fight. Also, the game randomly chooses between 3 bosses for the fight. Xan, Malcolm, and ClanLord.

+1 Edit: In "Godlike" mode, the short dwell periods between fights is much apreciated to regulate the player's heart-rate / adrenalin level :D.

Not to mention it’s kinda hard cause you will be running around the map and you rarely see your opponent and it’s feels like forever to find him and then suddenly he appears and kills you, the map is amazing but it’s kinda big that feels like a whole maze and let’s not forget the slow high jump when you get outside or on the top of the ship

Weird game series as a whole. UT99 and 04 are indeed the best. Absolutely adore the design choses they've made in UT3 tho. Looks amazing even today imho. Grim and with neon signs around. But the game never took off competitive/esports wise. It was completely overshadowed by Quake, and as an MP game it was inferior. Mostly due to Quake's smooth movement i think. They should have abused Assault mode. It was the perfect idea. Get objectives done as a team. Similar to Wolfenstein Enemy Territory.

7:40 that map is only too big for duels if you're bad at the game and don't strictly stick to item timings and don't know the spawns. Capable players usually fight for the powerups, instead of running around the map aimlessly and will attempt to spawn-kill you. The Skilled and above bots are always exactly on time for the items, but they won't attempt to spawn kill you consciously. If they did, Godlike/Inhuman difficulty would be pointless after the 1st death, you would never recover.
