While Unreal Tournament was brought back more recently than other games we’ve covered in this little retrospective series of ours, its death and subsequent absence from the gaming landscape is still incredibly noticeable. With a legacy spanning close to 25 years, perhaps the time is right for Unreal to make a return. Today, we’re asking the question: will Unreal Tournament ever make a comeback?

Fortnite killed unreal tournament. I have a lot of contempt for Epic Games for abandoning the series that put them on the map for a shitty battle royal game.

@@animeweng They could have put some of that financial success into the UT community. Hell most of us has at least some money in our pockets because we are older and have to have jobs, careers, etc. There is no excuse. They got greedy and arrogant. Screw em. I wish some old school devs from Epic and Bethesda could come together to make a legit Arena-FPS that combines the best aspects of Quake Arena and Unreal Tournament into a kickass game

The creative mind behind Unreal Series was CliffyB (Cliff Blezinski), who left Unreal (at UT2003/4 stage of development) project and created BulletStorm, then Gears of War. Epic never could recover Unreal or Unreal Tournament without Cliff's help. Otherwise, Gears was a tremendous success. UT3 had good ideas, but the maps were so polluted, the plot was so poor that it doesn't leave any doubt that it was a showcase for the Unreal Engine possitilities, nothing more. In that moment they killed UT series. Unreal III wouldn't become the eSports game they said they wanted to create. After a considerable period of time, drinking in Gears of War success, came the lie: Epic were wanting to bring UT to its glory, redeem themselves for UT3 bad performance and get back to the e-Sports scenery. The fans (me included) were so hyped, many good talents started to join the efforts for free and created amazing things. In that moment, Bluehole launched PUBG, a Battle Royale game under Unreal Engine licensing and, with its success, Epic decided to abandon UT4 and its hyped fans to transform Fortnite in a Battle Royale game. Simply like that. Good for Epic games finances, they are happy. But us, who were loyal fans... thrash can was the destiny, with their most important jewel in their history. They don't care, they're rich now. They have lots of money and a true marvelous engine at their service for the present and future. "F*ck the past" is what I 'read' in their attitude.

And cliff is now a twatwaffle yalking about toxic masculinity in videogames. He demands be called clifford now and guilt for having fun shit talking and creating cliffyb's ownage hit him hard. This often happens to people who made it easy through talent and good timing. They look for a way to make themselves guilty.

I can tell, if Unreal Tournament ever comes back, its not gonna be the same. Probably gonna be littered by 8 billion different microtransactions and overcomplicated movements, while the good ol' weapons gonna be nerfed to oblivion with preset loadouts, and will only have 1 or 2 maps each gamemode (which is probably gonna be limited to TDM (not free for all), CTF and if we are lucky, either form of DOM. Ah of course, BR too. And no, I ain't talking about Bombing Run there.

The future of UT may be uncertain but if one thing is for sure is that its past is SOLID. The classic UT still has a strong and active fan base and it's first versions are always great to play. My personal favorite is the UT Game of the Year Edition. Hats off and hands down to the its creators and to the fans who still create maps, mods and maintain the servers. Any first person shooter gamer cannot honestly feel the true experience without trying this classic game. I invite them to try this quintessential classic.

What happened to UT was it was too hard for newbs to pick and play with practicing. Games with short skill curves were suddenly selling like hot cakes because they took no real practice to get god at. I want another Unreal Tournament based in congested castles and labs. Not Unreal 2003, or Unreal Championship, or any of the rest. No special skills or powerups, etc. The original UT improved perfectly on Unreal, and was the most fast paced, skill based fragathon ever.

Its was a good narration. Thank you. I guess the main problem with this is that the game development become a corpare thing, which may makes high quality content but also become very greedy. Anything which wont make the developer increadibly rich is not considered succes. Makeing games which have souls, but only brings back 2 times the invested money is not a goal anymore. Its a big shame.

You missed several UT games in the history section, the ones people actually played too.. As much as I enjoyed that kind of game when i was a kid, it's just not for me anymore. I was in the closed alpha for quake champions and it was a blast, but I can only play games like that for short bursts, and eventually I just didn't wanna que up anymore. I won quite frequently, but my heart can't handle it. It would be pounding out of my chest at the end of each match. I kinda remember everyone dropping that style of game for Counter Strike when it got popular. It's just easier to watch I think.

Like you pointed out with Open Tournament, it will be a new indie developer that eventually becomes the spiritual successor to UT. Epic as a company is not the Epic that created the original UT. Same as Blizzard, not the same company that created Diablo. But you can see new indie games and companies popping up that are taking on the mantle of the original games. Heck even Blizzard just re-released Diablo 2 Resurrected because they know the original is still a thousand times better than Diablo 3 and probably Diablo 4.

Quite honestly from what I learned over the internet about Unreal Tournament 4 in just only a couple of hours, with the developers whom jumped ship for a possible bigger payout and that is very imaginable in this point of time. I do however truly believe it was the modern generation of young gamers that killed the Unreal Tournament franchise and thus is why Fortnite was able to prosper in the end. if you really think about it, the younger generation was just not familiar with ANY Unreal Tournament product of series of games in general. So what Epic did was a fresh new product and they choose to cater to only one audience (the modern gen of gamers) with that being said - They simply wanted to make a product that was a sure thing in the modern era of arena FPS and so they took a gamble with Fortnite and of course it paid off big time. Unreal Tournament is not worse than Fortnite - not by even a hair, infact in the early years of PC and console gaming for the older gen FPS arena shooters UT was on the top of the list and only sooner or later mostly every successor that ever compared to Unreal Tournament (The Quake series) was now sadly in the same boat of drowning out to something more relevant in this day and age. Epic did the obvious, they went with something that made them more money and they knew what they did but of course they would never tell you that personally how they really felt about jumping bandwagons to work on another product that screamed for more attention in the long run. Are they still proud of the Pre Alpha with what they did up to this point with Unreal Tournament? Sure They Are! Also why they left and abandoned a much more legit product and more known title in UT that had been around for years and years and in the best of circles with the genre of PC and console FPS arena shooter classic gaming with gamers young and old and past and future generations to come. Now the UT community along with gamers/fans of Unreal Tournament are left with this in their hands to finish the product to mold and perhaps create more then what we see in the state it was left in. The terrible part about gaming is the current state that it is in now a days its all about money money money and nothing else. Unreal Tournament was NEVER a failed product, it was just in the wrong hands of developers who turned to the modern era of gaming - more less, the younger generation of gamers that we live with today. There will be successor to the Fortnite franchise sooner or later, its only a matter of time - but it won't go down by any new Unreal Tournament game any time soon. Fortnite has to be one of the most brainwashing fasacnations for a young gamers fantasy that ever had existed, Example: you take the Fortnite merchandise that god knows you know forsure Epic is making a killing off that alone and that is just one thing surely Epic is quite proud that Fortnite exists. The kids (MOSTLY ages 10-15) will play this game and love everything it has to offer (even if some of the in game content gets removed for more WORSE content) its simply a huge payoff to them in the end as long as the kids whom play this are kept in interest only because its SO streamlined towards their direction, the merchandise of figures and dolls and such is AIMED at an audience of a young age, the toys are AIMED for an audience of a young age, the memobelia is AIMED for an audience of a young age. Epic basically took something away from one generation to give to another, is ALL they did for greed and NOT for the love gaming. Blame Epic (mainly for catering towards ONLY the young generation) for Unreal Tournaments fail NOT Unreal Tournament as a standalone product in the industry of FPS arena style games.

If a new unreal tournament is ever made it'll have nothing of the grittiness that the others had. Definitely forget about spamming 'die bitch' taunts or anything remotely like that. It'll be pc. Whatever it will be, they're more than likely never making another ut due to current culture. It's a miracle already that something like warhammer still exists. If they make another UT, it'll be watered down as fuck as to not offend anyone. In other words, fortnite is more lucrative.

Before fortnite, unreal tournament 3 really killed the whole thing. It wasn’t bad, but it lost its personality, and looked too much like gears of war. It was just disappointing.

Unreal and Unreal Tournament is dead. They recently delisted all the games cause they didn't want to keep the server browser online.

The narrator lost all credibility at 7:02 when he called UT3 a success, which makes me wonder if he actually experienced the games or just read articles and watched videos in preparation for making a video containing little insightful content. UT3 on the PC proved to be a huge failure and may not have had even 0.1% (one one thousandth) of the online multiplayer activity that UT99 or even UT 2004 achieved in terms of online-player-hours. I purchased UT3 a few days after release, played UT3 Warfare online for a few months, and I can testify that UT3 had extremely low PC online player counts and its PC online multiplayer scene was almost completely dead a few months after release. UT3 on the PC felt like a half-finished console port and IMHO was the final nail in the coffin for the series.

Played UT2k4 since release, can confirm UT3 was the beginning of the end (or the end). No one I knew wanted to switch over, and momentum for 2k4 started dying out. Clan disbanded soon after

we should at least get more UT content for Fortnite, if this game is dead af. All we got so far is just 1 song. Lame.

Gears of War happened and they made unreal Tournament 3 .. and the franchise died since it was way demanding - Whoever did chose like voice packs and made sound in tht game should have been fired.. for kids younger than minus 3 -like amobea

Nah, there is no future for unreal, sadly. AFPS is just no in favour of newer generations of players spoiled by arcady cod gameplay, skill-based matchmaking and flashy colourfull skins. Quake tried to mimick that bs by adding "heroes" with "abilities" (defying genre basic rules: all are equal on spawn) and adding microtransactional bs to milk it - failed miserably. If ut tries something like that - it will fail too.

UT 2004 and Soldier of Fortune: Gold are my favorite FPS of all time. IMO UT put FPS on the map.

Sweeney, dude, not rich enough yet? 8 billions, right? I really looked up to you since the Future Crew days. You gave talented people like Brussee and Bleszinski a chance who made your company big and your wealth even bigger. You created awesome MEGAgames in the 90s based on knowledge and skills you(r) guys learnt from the demoscene, smooth parallax scrolling and awesome tracker music (Epic Pinball, Jazz, Zone66 etc.) - and eventually UNREAL (even the name you got from FC I just realized, lol) and its engine. Your games were cool, you were kings and your engine was and still is gold ...but when you stepped back from UT and Bleszinski left, Epic started lacking a lot(!) and it's a shame how you treat UT and its fans (aka the ppl who put Epic on the big screen). This is bullshit. What happens when nobody plays Fortnite anymore? Don't you think the younger audience may hop to something more serious like UT after being done with Fortnite? IF UT4 was finished finally, and get a RTX pass even etc. I mean you got/had the foundation and many years of experience. How hard can it be... Release the sourcecode at least. Or still pissed you didn't get FC's Pinball sourcecode? ;) Anyway. RIP best arena shooter ever. Still dreaming of Deck 16...
