Queen's Escape, Château de La Tuilerie

Жыл бұрын

Lots of château buyers buy with the intention of massive renovation. That was not the case with us. We wanted projects, yes. But we knew we didn't have the capacity to take on a ruin and bring it back. The former owners of Château de La Tuilerie didn't just own the castle, they lived in it. As a result, all systems were in good condition and the interior was move-in ready. That's not to say that we don't have plans to re-decorate to bring our Queen's Escape concept to life. We do. :) For now, we're focused on tidying up the exterior, painting, planting, trimming, and freshening. We found the interior to be ready-to-rent. Although we went ahead with a deep cleaning of every square inch. In this video we'll take you on a little tour of our Queen rooms to let through our bed & breakfast.
-------------------
Learn more about our château, nicknamed, 'Queen's Escape and book a night in our bed & breakfast or start planning your wedding or event: chateaudelatuilerie.com/
Subscribe to our KZfaq channel: @Queen's Escape
Queen's Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We've named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
With it's sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

Dress the rooms with large pictures and large mirrors over the fireplaces AND put in Chandeliers. That will make the rooms look more elegant. Oh carpets too. Thus comment is in addition to the one I just left about the Queen Elizabeth bathroom. LOVE your channel!!

We had neighbors coming to pick up large mirrors after the owner left, if you can believe that. So, we’re down a few. But planning to replace. We appreciate your suggestion. It helps confirm what we were thinking.

Beautiful chateau! Thank you for sharing it with us. Two things to suggest: taller bedside lamps- they are not in proportion to the glorious size of your rooms. Also, I hope you have adequate doorstops on all of your rooms, because you seem to enjoy, placing the mirrored wardrobes behind doors, and I am so afraid that the handle is going to smash your mirrors. Forgive me if you have already addressed that, but sometimes people can be a little clumsy, and having those armoires against the wall, between windows, or something like that may avoid an accident. Thank you for letting us see your beautiful Château. Look forward to seeing what ideas you have. Having each room named after a queen was a very good and imaginative idea.

It’s amazing how much work you got done in a short amount of time. The rooms have good bones but look very bland. They need character to match the Queens and time period they are representing. There is good bone structure and light. I would go as bold as Angel Strawbridge at her chateau. The bridal suite should be very elegant in white, gold, linens, lavender, sage green, Moroccan silk rugs in a faded antique pattern. It will be so lovely to see your vision for the rooms come to life. You care so much for this building and it will be beautiful.

I 100% agree , the rooms have wonderful foundations to make stunning Queen's rooms. Period style wall papers (modern copies or large wall stencils ) rugs, lush fabrics, strong cordinating wall colors and artwork ( reproductions or resonalble priced second hand finds). With each room representing the royal style each queen might have been acustomed too living in. You don't have to be period exact, but more fantasy versions of the individual queen's style. Good luck , I am sure you will achieve great sucess.

Looks lovely 😍 can't wait to see each room decorated for each queen. I did notice your armours are so close to the opening doors, the handles could break the mirrors on them. A simple solution to stop this, would be a rubber door stopper that screws into the floor. This would stop any unnecessary breakages which could be costly . xx

Concerning an efficient method for ironing sheets, have you considered a Miele rotary iron or an oversized pressing machine? I’ve tried a steamer but I could not achieve a “crisp” look. A lot more to do to make the rooms more cozy and up to date but there is certainly a lot of potentional! I was wondering why you choose these queens in particular. Its a real mix ofmodern and queens from the past. Except from them being queens there is not a connection between them.
@BoSAChristensen
@BoSAChristensen Жыл бұрын
Hello Nicole. You’re right, we’re just getting started. There’s lots to do, and we want to use colors and themes for each room. Something that is related to each particular Queen. We had several different Queens on the idea board. We wanted Queens that had a nice history. Margrethe II - our Danish Queen was my first choice, because she is very creative and has brought a lot of design to us. Did you know that she was evolved in designs for The Lord of the Rings? Bo

@queensescape
@queensescape Жыл бұрын
Hi Nicole, Bo explained Margrethe. We chose Eleanor to have a French Queen since we are located in France, and also bc she was a French native unlike a lot of other French queens. We chose Queen Elizabeth bc she is loosely considered our queen in the US. We chose Cleopatra to represent the middle eastern region. (The queen of Jordan was also on the table.) I spent considerable time in the MENA region so have an appreciation for the culture and design. We chose Catherine the Great simply bc her status as an important Queen can not be ignored and I personally love her support and championing of the enlightenment. Himiko was chosen to represent the east. She is not the most well-known Queen, but the histories of some of the most famous queens from the region don’t represent values and stories we could align ourselves with. Himiko, because of her slightly feminist slant and somewhat mystical story felt like a good fit. I also didn’t want to give up the opportunity to have a Japanese-inspired room. So, it may seem a bit random and spread out, but it was a thoughtful process.
@starveartist
@starveartist Жыл бұрын
I could definitely understand the thought process behind choosing queens that represent different regions. Cleopatra also includes Africa, which is good along with Himiko to give a more global/multiethnic/multicultural representation. Not an easy task to choose 5, but I could see they were well considered. Well done.

French pronounciation: Acquitaine - Ac-qui-taine: Aah-kee-ten (like the number 10) Looking forward to seeing Cleopatra room redesigned with an Egyptian flair.....will be exciting!b I looove the bathroom in the turret of Elizabeth! Beautifully done! There are carpets in Eleanor & Himiko rooms that are of Navaho type. Would they not be better placed in Cleopatra's room? Or did they come with the chateau? Chateau de Cayx - Ca-yx: Kah-yicks. Any plans on painting some of the walls? They're all off-white....will each queen have her own color? Looks like the dumbwaiter only needs a new left side rope....should be an easy fix. Check the pulleys - they may need a little grease/machine oil. These were notorious for getting jammed up with rope fibers. I once worked in a Victorian museum and the caretaker had restored one. His biggest challenge was to find a rope of the correct thickness to match the original but he eventually found a supplier.

@@queensescape You are so kind. Isabella of Castile: Let us leave her historical importance, and the fact that she was a smooth operator in a man's world aside, if you do not mind. Her portrait appeared amongst Henry VI, Henry VIII, Richard III and a few other VIPs in a watercolour by James Stephanoff (1789-1874) The painting was made for Pyne's Royal Residences, specifically for "The Old Drawing Room", also known as "the Queen's Private Dining Room" in Kensington Palace. It was like the renders that interior designers do nowadays to present their projects to clients If "they" (Kensington Palace) can have Her, so can you ;) Catherine of Aragon, impeccably educated (she was fluent in Latin, Spanish, English, Italian and French, more or less like you two) was Isabella of Castile's daughter, first wife of Henry VIII, mother of Mary Queen of England (Bloody Mary) and aunt of Emperor Charles V. @@queensescape I think much larger rugs that go partly under the beds would also help. I watch lots of chateaux channels and my husband and I owned a remodeling company before retirement. I helped clients pick out the flooring, tiles, paint, countertops, etc. Definitely watch as many chateaux channels as possible. I watch How to Renovate A Chateau because of Phillips humor. I do not like Anna’s style at all. It’s way too modern and monochromatic. We RV full time and I love visiting old mansions. Have you seen the mansions in Newport, Rhode Island?

We love traveling in Europe and the Dordogne region is a favorite. Your castle looks lovely! But - The beds are all important to me, and all of your beds look un-inviting, with hard mattresses it appears and none are Queen or king sized? Also those shower floors look quite dangerous because they appear to be very slippery and have a sunken part, therefore have uneven floor! I hope your rooms eventually become more luxurious …

Thanks for the observations, Betty. We haven’t had any complaints on our beds or floors, but we’re not for everyone. Luxury hotels would certainly offer more luxurious amenities.

I get that it's a work in progress. You need lots of big carved furniture...used reproduction is fine. I think some rich colors that are period appropriate would be good.

Uh... Cleopatra wasn't Arab as she was Egyptian. There's a massive difference. I'd be more careful going forward as that might be offensive to many people. And Eleanor of Aquitaine was also the queen of England by her second husband, Henry P., not just the queen of France. I think that's important to note when discussing her.
@queensescape
@queensescape Жыл бұрын
Yes. We know. Egyptians are Arabic-speaking and Muslim. We've lived in the Middle East. Eleanor was French and the queen of France before England and ultimately moved back to France. Your points are valid.

Have you given thought to disabled guest?
@queensescape
@queensescape Жыл бұрын
Yes. I have disabled members of the family. Ultimately we’d like to put an elevator in our servant’s staircase to make everything more accessible. The cost has this job further down the list unfortunately. We don’t have space for a ground floor bedroom, so the elevator is the correct solution. For the Orangery, we will install ramps and wheelchair-accessible bathroom stalls. That’s where our thinking is now.

I would seriously consider putting ceilings on the bathrooms and a door on the turret bathroom. No one wants to do their business when someone can see and hear them.

I know u said in time rooms would be done properly. Naming the rooms …a bit premature, as nothing in the rooms relate to the names…actually can’t imagine the final images that’s in your mind…the “ queens “ theme seems very restrictive, formal and pompous. U mention desk and chair for each rooms…that’s a rigid formal thing …maybe soften with make up mirror on the surface and an arm chair. You ve got a lot of work ahead in terms of interiors. Lighten up, soften up….plush and luxury will induce relaxation and comfort…

Noticing all the hard work and cleaning y'all have accomplished but seriously disappointed when you opened Cleopatra's door and there was nothing that said Cleopatra! rich colors, pyramids, obelisks, gold. Honestly, until you get more design happening, I would leave off with the names. As is, it is a simple nice place to let rooms for holiday. I just feel your clients or customers would be very disappointed. No offense meant.
@queensescape
@queensescape Жыл бұрын
No offense taken. We feel the same. The guests we have had didn’t take much notice of the names. They were just pleased as punch to stay in a nice, large chateau room. Branding-wise, you’re in point. The experience has to back up the idea. -KC

Yes, definitely obelisks would work to unite the theme, but still not clashing too much with the architecture. Something pyramid too, and maybe some animal print on upholstery or pillow. The trick is to keep it tasteful and harmonious with the chateau as a whole

To my experience the worse clients that you get doing B&B in France are the people that stay at your place because of a marriage second worse are couples with children that run around being loud and vases or other art objects tend to get broken. Some children are fantastic but not all of them. Doors between room are only good if it is family or friends in the rooms otherwise it is no good since you can hear everything that is going on in the room beside.........
@starveartist

I like that they have a curtain AND a door between those rooms, but they could consider HEAVIER curtains to dampen sound more, or add another door, like modern hotels do to give more separation and sound barrier

I really like the rooms but I do not like that the bathrooms do not have high ceilings. It is a dust trap the way it is now. Are you going to change that in the future? I am not critizing you because I know it take time and money to change things to your taste. I think your properts is lovely.😊Ylva

The bathroom ceilings are as high as each room ceiling, so no, there’s no way to change that. Maybe I misunderstand you. How would you adjust that? Could you mean that the wall doesn’t extend all the way upward between the room and bathroom? Yes, we will raise those walls all the way.

I'm sorry, the rooms have good bones but are pretty dismal. Bold colors, wallpapers, elegant bedding, lush curtains, period furniture are needed. People are paying to stay in a chateau and it looks a little like an inexpensive motel in the US. I wouldn't rent out those rooms until you've redone them or people will be unlikely to recommend them to friends and family. Sorry, but concerns me that you think they are ready to rent. Best of luck on your venture. It's a beautiful home.

I think when considering the HUGE task of restoring such an old building (especially after watching so many old chateau restoration videos) just have CLEAN, functional, weatherproof rooms means that they are usable (and rentable) as a completed goal or task. Then then next level is to give them more design and character, which I don't think should be rushed, as decor that is found over time thrifting and antique shopping will give the quality outcome they will get to in order for it to be even MORE rentable.

Not sure of your future design strategy with designing around Foreign Queens as inspiration. Cleopatra? Really? The decor should reflect the French culture, since that is what people come there to experience. These rooms are stark and absolutely uninviting. You can get great bargains at French thrift stores the dress up the rooms. Pictures, statues, vases with flowers, pillows, candles. If you haven't any idea how to decorate a room, please ask for help. Your guests should feel like they are in France, not Motel 6.
