Queen's Escape, Château de La Tuilerie

Жыл бұрын

It's February and Karen's sister is in the château. During the first week of her visit we removed the shutters from the 2nd floor, found a laundry pressing solution, visited the Brive open-air market, and got some exercise. That's château life right now. :)

Queen's Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We've named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
With it's sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

Hey Sis, a great way to knock out those sheets in a quick and professional fashion would be to get your chateau a ‘mangle’. Way back in the day my Grams used to ‘take in’ ironing jobs. She always used her mangle to iron sheets, and it’s quick. I used to love helping her, and seeing how sheets would go from wrinkled to smooth and crisp. I think you can even order them from Amazon these days. Hope this tip helps! Love your chateau!

I agree, they call mangles “rotary steam irons” now on Amazon. They cost about $2,800. My mom also had a mangle (family of 8 children)and did all our sheets, pillowcases, tablecloths and linen towels on it. For a business like a wedding venue or bed and breakfast, I would imagine that it would be worth the investment for quick turnaround. Sheets and pillowcases dried in the sun smell wonderful, unlike anything else. It is a fond memory of my childhood.

You asked a lot of questions in this vid clip. I will only sleep on cotton sheet - but they MUST be sateen finish. That gives a smoother finish ( and NO - that doesn’t mean they turn into slippery satin sheets). I have tried everything to make my sheets relatively smooth. You need a slow spin and I fit them to the bed and use a steam iron to get rid of the wrinkles - easy peasy! DO NOT use a powdered laundry detergent as that leaves a residue on the sheets. IMPORTANTLY - you do not need as much detergent, let alone a highly perfumed one, to clean the sheets. Your next question was re the number of advertisements - I simply love your channel because you do not do this. I can cope at the begining and at the end, but too many advertisements I simply loose interest. I live in the stunning Deep South of New Zealand and would love to come and visit.We had a brief stay in France just before Covid changed our lives and one day I will come and stay in your amazing Chateau. I LOVE how you are telling your story which is why I dont change the channel. Please don’t change anything

There are two professional approaches that you can take: 1.) get yourself a mangler machine which is specially designed for sheets and coverlets or 2.) you can place your sheets directly on the mattress and use a steamer to iron out the wrinkles while on the mattress. This approach will also sanitize the mattress between each new visitor.

Hi Karen! Loved the video with you and your sister at the market. That is what I love to see in the videos that I watch of French chateaus. I love the experience and I love to see the food of the region. I also loved that you showed us the area around you. It is so interesting to me as a native of Western Colorado who will probably never see France in person. One of the main reasons I was attracted to your videos is that you and Bo are actually running your B&B. That is fun to know the day to day tasks. I love too seeing the renovations that are going on in these magnificent castles ( that’s for Bo. I loved how he explained in an earlier video the difference between Chateau and Castle.) I don’t mind ads. I totally understand the work that goes into what you are doing in these videos and the costs of renovating. I say go for it, if it will benefit you. It is fun to get to know you and I loved seeing your sister.❤

Thank you for working on the shutters. Several other chateau owners have been there for years and years and still have crappy broken and chipped shutters up. BTW, run the ads and get whatever revenue you can. We are all used to them. You need to make money off these videos as the editing and filming can be extremely time consuming and we don't want you to decide it's not worth it and stop making them.

Mr.Claudi is also the man to Pollard the trees . especially the ones you showed from the decorative top window with the "hole" that looked like birds nest area. This is very French to groom and top-trim the trees annually to control the shape (from branches hitting building and windows) and it encourages new growth. This process keeps trees healthy and long-lived along with a stylish shape. Good will for your adventure.

I like the videos because they are calm but exciting. In chateau vlogs, I like content from the chateau itself, the outbuildings and the property. Content from travel and markets is boring, it's fine with a bit of it, but if it's too much, you'd rather watch travel vlogs. Too much talking is also boring, I think you have a good balance there. It's fun with q and a now and then. But the videos where chateau owners sit and talk and talk in every vlog, uninteresting. I want to follow around in the chateau, getting to know it together with the owners. It is because of my love for historic and beautiful buildings i watch chateau vlogs. So far, your vlog has become a favourite. It's not fussy and it's informative in an exciting way. The balance and the variation in your content is perfect. Don't care about the commercials. Very good work.

Watching this episode and I suddenly realized I had seen another chateau owner, with bed and breakfast, same problem. They purchased a “mangle.” It’s like a big wringer but it irons beautifully. We used to have them here in the states, in the past. My mother in law had one. Linen suppliers use them but they are much larger. Another chateau owner I watch, got hers in either England or France. She is British and French. It’s Stephanie Jarvis, Chateau La Lande. Her Administrative Assistant, Natalie may be able to help direct you to a supplier of “mangles.” I really enjoy your program. I’m Danish-British-American. Learning to speak Danish which always scared me but loving it. I wish you every blessing. I’ll be watching😊. So, I feel that ironing the sheets will go faster. The steamer is to small, maybe for a garment it would work. Also, I fold fitted sheets standing slipping my hands in corners, gather up opposite corners , then folding right to left fitting the corners together. You'll get 99% of the wrinkles out this way. Practice makes perfect. Also over dry sheets will set wrinkles, take them out just barely damp and steam iron. Best of luck👍

I used to work at a hotel in Germany. We had a clothes mangle to run all table linens through as it was too expensive to have them professionally cleaned. It works for sheets as well. You can also get a professional steam iron. Maybe, once business picks up, you can get somebody in to do the ironing for you. Would be a great job for a Single Mom to earn some extra $$$ while kids are at school and have a flexible, on demand schedule. Single Moms are very reliable as they need to income.

When you pull flat sheets out the drier, fold them with someone…stretching each straight edge then pul the diagonals as hard as you can. Fold and stack, the weight of sheets piled either help straighten well folded sheets or help iron them. Fitted sheets iron themselves out on the bed. You can spritz or steam them flat

You could try to fold your sheets while they are still warm just after taking them out of the dryer. Fold and press them down with your hands and stack the folded sheets one on top of the other, it weighs them down and no wrinkles. Hope that suggestion solves your problem. I would hate to "have " to iron sheets, but what about one of those iron presses? It would let you cover a lot more area than a traditional iron. Also, check out the options on both your dryer and washing machine. Mine have multiple options to allow for non-creasing of loads, I use these for sheets and clothing I have no intention of ironing. I would think that four minutes to steam a pillowcase is really no quicker than ironing it. The markets looked great. I really wished we had more of them in Tasmania as we have so much wonderful food here. I watch a lot of the different chateau vlogs and what appeals to me, is actually that you all do it so differently. Some things are the same, but it makes it interesting to watch and follow and that you are all such different people, and follow your own path.

A few ideas; You need an AGA, or similar make, which is a UK make of cooking range. They are great for folding a stack of freshly washed and dried folded sheets on. Leave the sheets on the silver hob lids for a few hours and they will press them selves. Also do not dry the sheets bone dry. Get them out of dryer just slightly damp, and do not leave them in the dryer once cycle is finished. That just sets in the wrinkles. Also, her ein UK, you can get anti wrinkle dryers which rotate items both ways in dryer which cuts down on wrinkling. And soon, the weather will get warmer so you should hang sheets outside as that also minimises ironing, especially if you fold and put on AGA. For winter or wet weather, have a shed or utility room to hang things in, ie a drying room, Make sure it is well ventilated or best if you can open windows if it is windy.

Another possible option for drying your sheets is to use a local laundrette. They often have them in supermarket car parks. The machines are much bigger so sheets don’t get so creased. They dry quickly and it doesn’t cost much. You could buy a bigger dryer for at home. I have seen one that’s about 1000 euros !!

I also live in a large manor in France. In a smaller room I hang and iron the laundry. I never use a dryer. I hang as many clothes as possible on hangers to dry on a long clothesline. I put the fitted sheets right out of the washing machine tightly around the relevant bed. And I put the duvet cover tightly on the largest bed in another room. (even though the rooms are not heated, they are dry in 1 night). OR: I hang the sheets over 2 clotheslines so they don't hang halves against each other. (over a thick wooden rod is also possible). In the drying/ironing room. I hang the pillowcases, well beaten out, on a drying rack. I only iron the pillowcases. Good luck.

The Best Steamers on the market are made by Jiffy. Their large steamer sits on the floor with a wand and support rod. They also have wheels to move around on the floor. I think the one we use in the shop has a gallon or two tank. They have a pre-heat setting which indicates when the water in the tank is warm enough to switch to steam. They make garment steamers that are smaller and also the best in the market. I bought one for my wife for Christmas this year since she asked for it. We use their larger industrial one for upholstery steaming and it worked fantastic on my daughters wedding dress too! Just what you need for your brides!!! I use them almost every day in my restoration shop for steaming dents out of furniture as well. Jiffy make interchangeable heads that come with them, they have large head options that are around 12" wide. The heads are made from cast metal and gets hot from the steam creating an ironing effect along with the steam. When I ran the customer service dept. for Ethan Allen I brought them into customers homes to apply to wrinkled skirts on bedding, crushed velvet repair, sofa skirts , chairs & pillows. Their steamers will also work well for drapery. When using them you do need to moderate the slight burping that occurs as moisture condenses in the hose by lifting up the hose to allow the water to run back into the tank. I however think one of the large industrial ironing rollers will work better for your application. These are used in the hotel & dry cleaning industry to do sheets. They are around 48" wide and have a power roller. Out the other side comes a nice ironed sheet with much less effort and time. Best, Brian

Queen's questions: *It's nice not having an ad in the middle, but if it's really cutting into your profits, then I don't mind another break in the middle (just not every few minutes like some vlogs). *I like how the two of you seem to make a great team with mutual respect for each other's skills. The Beau Chateau is another channel that shows a sweet respect for each other. On The Chateau Diaries, I enjoy the volunteer program that they have because it's like an ever rotating multicultural family and they bring skills from all over the world. On these channels, my favorite part about chateau channels is learning about the history and hidden surprises and discoveries (you really should do some metal detecting!). Before and Afters are always inspiring too. *Dislikes? If there is a strong accent that I can't understand and there are no subtitles for that part. Also, I don't mind background music as long as it doesn't drown out the voices speaking. *I think it must be challenging to navigate having the government approve changes for your own property, but these charming areas wouldn't be so charming if it wasn't somewhat controlled. Some people have some pretty hideous ideas on how to treat a historic home. LOL! One question, why is it Karen and Bo and not Bo and Karen? I'm wondering because when we got married, my new husband wondered why the bride's name was first on everything (even on a billboard in front of the hotel having the reception!). I think it hurt his ego a little! ~snort~
@queensescape
@queensescape Жыл бұрын
It isn’t Karen & Bo for any reason except that when you add our last name, ‘Karen & Bo Christensen’ it sounds better to me bc it’s his name and has been longer. So, no real reason. 😊 We appreciate the answers to our questions. The insight really helps! 😊 P.S. Mutual respect is very important to us both on and off camera. It makes me cringe when I see partners berating the other on any programming, even jokingly. That’s bc I know Bo would be very upset if I spoke that way. We tend to think women have the right to treat their husbands a bit less than respectful in the US - in a joking way (berating fashion sense / how to do some things). But I don’t agree and think as a culture we should change that. White men in sitcoms are often the butt of the joke bc in life historically they have a lot of privilege and power, so they ‘can take it.’ I still don’t think it’s good for a marriage. That was a much longer response to your simple, nice comment. 😂 Thank you again.

I think the best way for the sheets is to hang dry them - but it means no rushing. Perhaps there is somewhere handy to have some big lines from the ceiling that would work for you. If you must a steam press (like a wider ironing board that has a top and bottom board) may be the answer to finish up. Good luck. I spotted the fresh scallops at the second market. Yummmmm. My answers to your questions. "NO" ads, "great" the least the better! As can distract. So interesting, such a great watch to see people reinvent their life& the property they buy, wherever it may be! Also nice, when you watch people like yourself that seem sincere in doing this challenge together, whether new to them or not. See mistakes but also how they rectified as you learn, and we learn too. Not much I don't like, really, unless its sales/advertising of items being sponsored on "every" episode. It is always interesting to know about the history of the property, why it came for sale, was it always in the same family, and does the previous owners ever pass by. Last but least...And just keep doing what you're doing.

Hello, thank you for your nice comments. We will continue to produce more videos as we go. We are in good contact with the previous owners. Last time we saw them here at the Chateau was in October last year, but they let us know that they watch this channel to follow the development as we go. It is a good idea regarding the history of the Chateau. Something we have been looking into already, but maybe also something to make a video about in the future. All the best, Bo.

I would buy a Tefal steam generator iron. Really effective at removing creases even from bone dry cotton. Alternatively I think you can get steam/iron table presses. In the summer make sure you have lots of washing lines as it saves masses of time on ironing. I would also invest in 3 sets of linen for each bedroom or at least half the bedrooms to buy you more time between change overs and maybe you could employ a local person to help with the housekeeping as your business develops.

Watching from Australia where clothes driers are a bit of a thing of the past. We dry everything outside on a clothes line and creasing not an issue especially if your front loader has a function at the end of the load that fluffs all the washing up. Might be worthwhile seeing whether there is a local hospitals washing service. In answer to your questions, you can create a poll for people to choose an option on KZfaq. These are only visible to me if I use my mobile phone though. Don’t mind the ads because I can just skip them with a function on my remote control.

I put my fitted sheets on the bed slightly damp, then smoothed them out. Use a mister in case they are too dry. They dry smooth, no big wrinkles ! I did other jobs and when they were dry I finished making all my beds. It solved the problem of storing them. If I wanted to use another set I just folded the sheet after it was dry. I purchased a second hand professional ironer for the flat sheets and pillow cases, etc for anything flat !

To run ads or not to run ads, I'll watch either way, they don't bother me in the least, and if you're going to utilize the monetization aspect of KZfaq, then you need them. You do what's best for you! I'm also not picky on how you form your vlogs, with or without sounds, music, voice or voiceovers etc. Again, you do you! I do enjoy the walkabouts and the time lapses, walking or driving around the area, and knowing when to use FF is really key to a good vlog. I look forward to following, and the best of luck to you both!

I agree on whatever with the ads. Sometimes ads are a great reason to run to the bathroom. (As a child of the 70s-80s, it's a technique we had to perfect back in the day.) I watch about 15 different chateaux. I'm a renovation junkie. I got tired of HGTV showing an absolute wreck of a house become a designer showcase in an hour. I like watching progress in "real" time. It takes years to do a decent Reno especially on larger buildings.

The dyer looks a lot like the one we once had in an apartment. It wrinkled everything and took an hour to dry 2 flat sheets, lol. Idk, if yours will handle the sheer volume of sheets you'll have to do, but the good thing is that most of your large parties will be in the summer. Air dry on lines if you can, and put them on the beds while slightly damp. Let them dry for a bit and come back to either press or steam. As budget permits, investing in a larger steamer and a mangle ought to do the trick. Good luck! Beautiful chateau!

Glad you got all the shutters off in one go. Now the big job of renovbating them can begin. Much quicker to iron the sheets etc. You can get special balls in the UK that go in the drier. They are supposed to cut down the wrinkles. My wife has tried all the tips & tricks but still finds ironing them gives the best results. Fold the sheets in 1/2 before you iron so takes 1/2 as long to do. Pillow cases only take a minute to do. Better than faffing about with a steamer. A slower drive around your area would be great the fast forward trip was not a good experience. A vlog about just the scenery around you would be excellent. Thanks for sharing. regards from the UK

I have a small cottage that is a short term rental, I use a spritzer to lightly spray the sheets on the bed. You can “iron” with your hand, add the top sheet, repeat… you can add a drop or two of lemon oil, lavender, etc., for a faint fragrance, being mindful that some are sensitive. I only use Egyptian cotton, 500-600 tc. So they aren’t too thick and hot. Of course, I’m only making one bed 😊

The only other way is to hang the sheets outside on a clothes line , here in NZ that's what we do all our clothes get hung outside but if it's raining they go into the drier ,. Was just thinking, do you have a room that you could convert into a linen room? Somewhere where you have your mangle set up, a steam ironing station, a folding table ( or if no space, an additional, sturdy ironing board to fold on and put away later, your clothes drying racks. Do you have a dust free room in the basement where you can string washing lines and install an additional washer and dryer? We used to dry clothes on lines in the attic, back in Germany. They freeze dry in winter. You just stick them in the dryer god 10 minutes to soften them up before ironing. In summer, you could install an outdoor clothes line. They look like an upside down umbrella. It’s wonderful to watch you adapt to your new life and all it’s challenges The two of you are doing a great job. When your radiators are on, place the drying racks in front of them and dry your socks or other small items on top of the radiators.

Hi. My sister bought 2nd hand trousers press to do her sheets for a holiday let. It was quick easy to use. The tree near the corner tower where you were unhooking the shutters has been “pollarded” - the branches cut back- to keep the roots of the tree from growing too much and affecting the foundation of your castle. I understand that has to be done in the fall, I think, every year. The pollarded ends are the little “nesting spots” you were seeing from above in the tower stairwell.

There is a ironing device that has rollers, about 3-4 feet wide...like making pizza crusts in advance...you just roll the sheets through...usually fold in half or 1/3's and then let the machine grasp the ends and roll/iron in seconds...over hours..... Get doubles of all sheets so you will NEVER have a set dirty and the other always ready in advance!!!

I ran a 10 bedroom B&B with my family for years so my top tips are- use flat sheets easily ironed & folded never fitted, invest in a good quality iron I had 2 = 1 x rotary & 1x Laurastar large industrial yes they are expensive but I bought my first set used they lasted 10 years before I bought new. Put Bicarbonate of soda in with your washing it keeps them white & soft they also spin dry better I used to buy large tubs from wholesalers but amazon do it now. When you do washing separate into single sheets, double sheets,king sheets, pillowcases & wash in batches. When you put in dryer don’t dry completely as it makes ironing difficult. I always had exactly same white bedding saves time no need to match up. Always use mattresses & pillow protectors that can be washed (this is a must for hygiene) ikea do some good quality pillow protectors. If you have the space set up a separate laundry room and look into industrial washer & dryer or at least bigger than your using now they are not suitable really. Always set breakfast table night before it is a lifesaver in the morning. Good luck it’s very hard work but worth it and so rewarding I loved it
