A look inside the Gemtech GVAC Upper

The Gemtech GVAC upper is designed to make suppressed shooting more comfortable thanks to a bore evacuator built into the gas block. In this video we're taking a look at it to see how proprietary it is, and how it compares to traditional methods of tuning a rifle for use with a suppressor.

As a former Main Gun Loader on an M-60A1 Tank. That bore evacuator covered about 90-95% of the gases. It also required regular maintenance. But, extremely reliable at not only evacuating gases. But, also in utilizing the gases to assist the round out of the rifled gun tube. I wonder if anyone has tried to develop a miniaturized version of the bore evacuator. Which is different in design than a gas block.

I was about the comment the same but thinking about it and our stupid gun laws it probly just doesn't make sense. full on tank style one I'm assuming it would be to effective for what little gas AR has and be borderline if not considered an NFA item "silencer" I'm no engineer but in my head it seems like it would be a very expensive solution to a small problem that already has cheap solutions, NFA item or not.

@@19DESERTFOX91 The only question would be: How would a suppressor be affected by a miniaturized bore evacuator. The barrel of the rifle would require proper ventilation. And, the owner would need to do occasional PMCS on the unit. In theory it seems like a good idea and an advancement.

Nitriding is what it is. A cost effective finish that is very corrosion resistant, toughens and hardens the surfaces and has fairly appealing visual properties, it also does not change the dimensional aspects of the treated parts. It's become a well-accepted part of the industry as the cost/benefit is good.

I broke an optic mount shooting off a lead sled like that… all the recoil is hitting the optic system. I started using a bipod and rear bag. It’s just flat out better than a lead sled in every way. Having 2 separate points of contact for you shooting rest is better than just one. Also with your bipod it’s nicer to shoot because if you load it forward properly, you get a very pleasant and natural recoil simulation, which returns to the same position. With the rear bag you can get a more natural body posture around it, plus you get a very natural elevation control just by squeezing and relaxing your hand. It’s a lot more portable too

Had this upper for about a year at this point. Shot with and without an Abyss on the end. It's a really nice upper and shoots well. My only complaint is the crush washer and ETM flash hider. Mine was out of spec and locked the silencer mount onto the muzzle device. Both are still sitting in a bag, attached, and I've since swapped to a different mount. Other than that, which Gemtech is supposed to have fixed at this point, it's a solid upper/silencer combo.

I love the hodge .625 gas port approach, but hate their price. Buffer spring and buffer tube weight are the easiest to change on a rifle or find middle ground to work with or without a can. I use a strong spring and h3 suppressed then an H2 and mil spec strength spring. But I have a regular baffle suppressor
@ToastbackWhale
@ToastbackWhale 3 ай бұрын
That’s not even really the trade off. Go look at third-party metrics like PEWScience. The FLOW762Ti performs very well at both the muzzle and ear, the CAT stuff does even better, and the highest rated suppressor at the muzzle at the time that I’m writing this is the PTR Vent 3, which is also has low back pressure due to its PIP technology. Even if you look at something like the FLOW556k, I’m pretty sure it still has the highest ear suppression rating, though it suffers at the muzzle (relatively speaking, it still outperforms some baffle cans lmao). It’s not about more or less backpressure, it’s about what you’re doing to the gas.

A couple companies have done some shady marketing practices around suppressors (looking at you, Sig) , and while i dont feel like this falls into shady, it seems less than optimal. Sorta on the right track but not quite there. Cost: My uppers were $1340* each w/charging handle at MSRP prices and its not gassy at all because i bought barrels with an appropriate sized gas port. So appropriate that a "just as good" BCG was actually short stroking without a suppressor on. I dont know how much of the cost goes to what, but this seems like a rather expensive way to achive very little. Aero Enhanced upper, Radian CH, BCM BCG, Triarc Track 2.0 barrel, Riflespeed gas block, and Mk4 Federal handguard. Thats 1340 with higher end parts too, get a basic tunable or Superlative Arms gas block and bump the handguard down to a NightFighter and youre in far cheaper with basically the same effect.

Like I understand it has a bore evacuator and a high speed looking BCG, but do those changes actually do anything over any other 16” mid bbl 5.56? I know you said it shot well with low backpressure cans, but that’s kinda the point of buying a low backpressure can in the first place, most uppers shoot well with them with minimal tuning.

@@lordhellfire153 I’ll go a step further and say that since the K-spec doesn’t change the cam path, the gassing won’t be any different that milspec (except that less of that gas will be directed at the shooter), so I’m not even sure if the K-spec BCG would be necessary to replicate the effects of this upper.

The dirty secret about suppressing guns is that most of the garbage comes back through the barrel, so even if you tune the gas way down you still get gassed out from the ejection port. The bore evacuator blows more of it out the front of the gun. But since it's not really tunable it helps to have a low backpressure can in the first place, and then it's really only a nice feature and not a game changer.

The best part about going to product launch events is I get lots of visitation time with MROs, and most of them aren't zeroed and sometimes they're broken!
