Chick saw his Chick Tracts as a tool to recruit the "unsaved," and the comics are full of what many consider to be hate speech. Thankfully VICE art editor Nick Gazin is back to teach you about them so you never have to pick one up yourself.

I think some are legit and come from a real place. (Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, Te Nehisi Coates Black Panther) I think others are just to get press. Mainstream comics are all about getting press attention and most of the motives are as honest as when DC killed Superman. It's just about sales through any means necessary.

Nathan Warrington Considering it's likely that Angela(name of the comic) will be read by less than 1% of Marvel's entire readership, I wouldn't exactly say they're pandering. They know it's a fringe comic only appealing to a certain audience.

@@markcelio9597 I worked with a woman who claimed to discern spirits almost everywhere. She was cheating on her husband the whole time. Were the unclean spirits she saw real? Was the "spirit of hypocrisy" she saw in others influencing her behavior too? Would she have retained the gift while she continued in sin? I think she claimed she'd been forgiven in the past and was allowed the occasional lapse. She was eventually terminated for preaching on the job. A gay man stood up for her. I think her church offered him a proxy baptism. They told him to hide his orientation, not to change it.

I’m sure they got better overtime, but the art in the ones shown here looks mundane and unimpressive to me. There’s nothing unique to its style, it’s very derivative of popular comics of the late 50s early 60s comic strips.

the most messed up one I read had no wording or conversation. It's a little girl like 8 years old who gets abused by her dad, then gets kicked out to the streets, she's then homeless and attacked by a stray dog and shunned by people. She then starves to death in an alley way. Finally an angel picks her up and takes her to heaven and says "somebody loves you" WTF

Sometime bout 1964, when I was headed off to College, someone handed me a copy of "This Was Your Life" in the Birmingham, Alabama Greyhound bus station. That one sure has stood the test of time.

Oh my god! I read the comics when I was in high school back in 2008! A friend brought them at school and some classmates and I read them through and through, and I love them! Despite me not been a religious guy, I'm quite fond of them because they were disturbing and entertaining and I liked the style. They were great, really. Omitted the religious moral or whatever, but they were good stories haha

I used to work for Jack Chick personally. The dude was incredibly humble and great personality. It was him and two other artists who drew. His warehouse is actually pretty chill and the people there are friendly!

Jack once said something to the effect that if you're walking down the street at night and see a house burning, there will always be those people inside angry that you've awakened them by banging on the door and yelling. But the ones thankful to be saved are your reward.

Jack was a professional artist and cartoonist. Fred Carter was self-taught, and is often referred to by professionals as onr of the greatest ever.

There was a Chick about a sick and dying little 7 year-old girl. She went on her last trick-or-treating with her brother. An elderly couple answered one door, saw she was in trouble and decided to put a "saving" tract in the little girl's pumpkin. The little girl read it, accepted Christ and was saved before dying. 1. So this 7-year-old was able to read and comprehend a Christian tract all by herself? 2. Bottom line: Was this 7-year-old really going to go to Hell in the first place?

Those tracts pretty much say anyone who doesn’t follow Jack Chick’s version of Christianity is going to hell. Doesn’t matter if you’re a despicable criminal or good sort - or only seven years old. The only thing that counts in going to Heaven is believing in Christianity the way Chick does.

That tract was actually depicting the Babylonian mother goddess and her son Tammuz, that's why they were in hell.

That wasn't the "historical" Mary, God's humble servant who weeps over all the idolatry that her otherwise good name has been attached to. That's Semiramis, an Assyrian queen who introduced devil worship to her realm to consolidate her husband's power. Semiramis has somehow convinced many putative Christians that she is a virgin goddess.

Jack Chick took the images of bearded, effeminate gay men in his 1971 tract "The Gay Blade" from a TV documentary. on the subject. This title has been withdrawn from circulation but can still be viewed on the chick.com website. He replaced it with other titles: "Wounded Children" (which was also withdrawn), "Doom Town," "Sin City," and "Home Alone?" "Sin City"''s Reverend Ray seems to be based on Rev. Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Church. In "The Birds and the Bees," which has also been withdrawn, one of the gay characters is the spitting image of Nathan Lane.

We go to heaven regardless if we do these or not Romans 5:11 “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” This is not Catholicism

Christians, he believed that anyone who didn't practice his highly reactionary brand of Christianity would burn in hell forever. A Satan who charts the progress of corruption, anarchy, and homosexuality (among other vices) gleefully presides over the carnage.

@@Prilavolus well, the Bible teaches you don’t go to hell when you accept Christ as savior (Romans 10:9) Sir , we all have terrible sins going against us . That’s why Christ died for your personal sins . (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) I recommend to look at the historical figure Jesus Christ through the KJB as your perfect example, rather than a sinful Christian

I remember reading books with lots of colourful illustrations about some of the prophets and their lives and miracles. They never showed the face of god OR the prophets. Very stupid books, honestly. They just kept going on and on about how the prophets were at first normal people following their tribe's normal religion and then one day oops they find the one true god (who's name is allah) and they start preaching and spreading his message. Of course, everyone turns against the prophet and then there's a plague or an earthquake or a flood and everyone dies except the prophet and his followers. All the stories follow the same basic outline and are quite absurd.

he came into the record store i worked at years ago, left 5 tracks around the store. he died 2016. used to find those in bathrooms at gas stations and fast food places in so cal, all over.

@Dillon Sudduth Can’t believe this is three years old. I still don’t believe in Jesus, I actually got into psychedelics recently. And I can tell you right now that Jesus is not real, he is made up so they can put fear in people and stop them from doing wrong. Religion and fear are used control people. If religion was never made up, there would be nothing from stopping hundreds of millions of people from just going out and murdering someone. Of course we have morals, but a lot of those morals are religion based.

I remember reading those when I was younger. The church I go to used to have some of them on a rack. They were extremely dark. "This was Your Life" scarred me as a kid and still hunts me to this day. I liked the series of comics that had a little Christian girl who held a sort of rivalry with her school teacher because of their opposing views.

That wicked "Ms." Henn -- any woman in Chick's world who uses "Ms." is clearly evil -- obviously made a pact with Satan to win her students over to evolution, sex ed, liberalism, feminism, and tolerance toward alternative lifestyles. The two gay husbands she bought into class for show-and-tell were crawling with demons. Lil' Suzy could discern the evil spirits from afar.

I used to see these around somewhat frequently. Maybe every year or two. Usually in a bus station or maybe a phone booth. Somewhere like that. Back in the old days. (80's/90's)

i got one of these comics or one very similar at a restaurant next to the cat and dog ads. i think it was called "its not your fault" or something similar. its was about 2 young boys living in a foster home then one of the boys hangs himself and the other boys finds him. the cops try to take all the kids out of the foster home but the judge is like nah theres no reason to. apparently years go by the boy gets adopted and the mom of this boy realizes hes having night terrors asks the boy why and the boy said the judge was molesting him and his now dead friend for years and the boys mom just tells him to forgive the judge and the boy does after some time then if by "the grace of god" the judge dies instantly of a stroke. it disturbed me deeply and thats why i remember it so vividly.
