It's a go on the Singer Serger found sitting on the top of a dumpster at Salvation Army. I did go in and pay $5 as they might have cameras. Enjoy the video.

Thanks! I have an old 14U454B (circa 1999) that I have started using quite a bit the past year - and have been researching how to maintain it. Your gem of a dumpster find is very similar to mine.
@capedoryus2 жыл бұрын
These machines are so simple compared to a regular sewing machine and maintenance is pretty straight forward. Once every five years or so take off the bottom to get the lint out and a few drops of sewing machine oil on the visable joints. The top side needs to be brushed out and oiled a bit more often. Notice the joints as you turn the handwheel. These are the joints that need a dap of oil now and then. Less is more in this case. Only use sewing machine oil or a product called Triflow. These oils are very light and will evaporate before they attract so much lint as to stop your machine. It's nice to do your own maintenance. You can get it done in the time it takes to drive to the shop and a lot cheaper.

I'm so excited to find your video! I just bought this machine secondhand (of course) today! I hope you decide to show more about it, maybe how to thread it and clean it? Thank you!
@capedoryus6 жыл бұрын
Renee Crites I would love to do a more in depth review and thread guide. I tried one take on threading and all you can see is my ham hock hands blocking the threading area. I'll try again. I may try with a lazer pointer. There has to be a million of these out there and I would love to help. It's a great little machine. Looks like there are only a few companies making sergers and the big names contract these companies to make them. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi John, I just came across you videos. Thank you for sharing your tips & tricks!! I do have a nagging problem with my right needle thread breaking too. Can you please do a short video showing what your talking about section 4:55. I need to get a closer look to work on mine. I believe I've had my Singer Serger 14U34B for 25-30 years & still working other than the needle thread breaking, I just sew with the left needle. For maintenance, I oil it & blow the dust away...Again thank you so much for sharing!!

Thanks Causha, I would do a video but I'm 400 miles away from the serger. Helped a friend move from Tampa to Trenton and stayed in Philly for Birthday. Lock down followed. I'm with family in Philly and serger is in Indianapolis. My thread was breaking due to the silver plate that's over the feed dogs had a nick in it or the thing that looks like a nail was bent. Ordered a new one and it fixed it. There is a Facebook group for Singer Serger users. Wish I could help more. Don't give up on this one as it's a great machine. I did pick up a $1500 Elna at a garage sale for $50. Hated it so much I gave it away. So fussy it was and the more features the harder it becomes to work with. Love the simplicity of 14U.

I have two of these, a three and four thread. The four thread I bought new and the other in a thrift store. This is a wonderful machine. A simple little workhorse.

I agree on this being a gem. I found a serger for $50 that was over 1K when new. Did not all that more than the dumpster Singer. Love the 14U.

I have this machine & I love it when it works properly but it is currently skipping stitches & can’t get it worked out. Any advice?
@capedoryus4 жыл бұрын
Wish I did Steph. I had a problem with a nic in the throat plate (silver piece on top of feed dogs) that was causing me problems. I used sand paper to file it down. I would also make sure the thread is sitting proper in the tension wheels. Since they are behind plastic it's eazy for one to be free. Change needles as one could be bent. I fixed my sister's Brother serger by bending one of the loopers by a tiny tiny bit. It seems somebody removers fabric by force after a jam and bent it out of spec. As you might guess by now I am not even close to an expert and can only offer the usual you find on the net. Wish I did have an answer for you.

I’m new to surgers and this one was given to me from my sister who got it for free. So I know little about this machine. Do you happen to have a video that gores over how to thread it? I can’t seem to find any on KZfaq.

Hello John, thank you so much for sharing this. I got one from a thrift shop a few months ago. One problem that I've had is finding replacement needles. I'd really appreciate if you could tell me where you purchase the right size needles for this machine. Best wishes!

Hello Nedoux Singer 2025 or Organ SLx75. I have purchased the Organ needles from Sharp Sewing through eBay. They seemed to be closed now due to Corona. There were a lot of people offering the needles on eBay. Sharp is great in that it's free shipping and they a lightning fast. Good luck n thanks for watching

I just picked up a Singer QuantumLock 4 Serger very similar to this one and it came with a foot pedal power cord - looks original and says Singer on it. At the thrift store, I plugged it in and it worked with the foot pedal. However, now home, only the light comes on, the foot pedal does not activate the machine needle motor. Any ideas of what to check to get it working again?

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner Scott. I really don't have a clue. Wish I could be more help. When I got mine from the dumpster I hotwired it to make sure it was not a dude. I think it's in the original videos. You have to be NASA scientist level of attention while screwing with electricy unprotected. I used a serg protector and alligator clips. This would tell you if the pedal is at fault. I purchased my pedal used on eBay for $20 with shipping. Its pretty standard Singer pedal. Wish I could be more help.

Do you know what type of needles I should buy for this machine the needle heads are so small i cant fit my normal overlook needles in it
@capedoryus3 жыл бұрын
I don't have the machine with me. If you go to Singer.com you can get the manual. I got mine from Sharp Sewing on eBay. They are great and shipping is fast and free on even one pack of needles. I would check and make sure you have the flat part of the needle facing the right way and that the screws are out far enough for the needles to seat properly. Don't ever take them out all the way as they won't go back in straight as I know from experience. Good luck

I bought a 1987-built 14U32 (3-thread) 2 weeks ago on eBay for $80 in good shape, and works perfectly. Yesterday I bought $40 worth of parts on eBay to add the 4th tension dial and second needle. Hopefully this will yield a 4-thread serger for only $120!

I have a Singer 14U64A, I think my looper timing is all messed up. Iis there anyway you can help me to calibrate? The lower loop thread came off as soon as I feed the fabric. It's not looping at all....

Amy I wish I could help. I am a far cry from a technician. Like you I like to figure it out and sometimes I get lucky. I know there is an order for threading and then running the initial stitch having to do with the needle thread looping on the LLooper. I never followed it but do recall reading it. With I could be of more help. I'm 400 miles away from my serger (lock down) and am sewing facemasks old-school. A royal PIA but doable. Kinda used to it. Good luck.

Hi Amy, Still no answer to your question but I did notice a kind soul contributed great tips in the comments. Check em out. Might be on the other serger video but I'm pretty sure it's on this one. Good luck

Hello, I wish I could but I am away from my serger. Went on a trip early Feb to help an old, 80s, friend move back to her family from FL. My sewing stuff is in Indiana and I am in Philly. I stopped in Phila to visit family when all the Corona stuff broke out. Lucky me in that I am with family with 2 machines I had stored here. Making face masks. I really wish I could help you. If I remember the manual does not tell you much more than the obvious. Just make sure the top knife is pushing against the needle plate. If it's to high up it will pop to far over to the left as your looking at the machine. There is a serger group on FaceBook. The last set I brought from eBay just to see and they worked great. Good luck

It's catalog #2054 in Singer world. I ordered them through Sharp Sewing through eBay. Free fast shipping with no minimum. I don't have the Organ needle number but I think Sharp has a cross reference. Singer has the manual on line for download. I put it on my phone and Google Drive. Here's the link to the one on my G Drive. drive.google.com/file/d/1mtFFaLUaGteaoaVAP-7Ut7s-zlK6RMDw/view?usp=drivesdk

Hello sir , l have this same overlock sewing machine. Right on l ‘m having a little bit of problem with my second thread it’s loose it’s not tight when I saw and I just adjusted keeping trying . I couldn’t fix it , so right now it is in for some service . And how often should I change my needle !
@capedoryus2 жыл бұрын
Sorry you were having problems. I would make sure the thread is going all the way between the tension discs if it should happen again. Ask when you pick up your machine if they will show you how to check it it's seated properly. I know you can figure it out but if they can show you in a few seconds it's time well spent. As far as needles are concerned I don't think I ever changed them unless I bent one by pulling the fabric in frustration after a mess up. These machines take needles that are made for sergers. I like to think they are more robust than regular home machine needles. Good luck. My serger is my most important machine.
