Thank you so much for posting this video I haven’t used my machine in almost 30 years and was afraid to do so since it has lain dormant. This video has taken away my fear of opening up my machine and oiling it all. There was a strange difference, my machine didn’t have the oiling pad on the inside. So, I oiled all that I could reach. After watching this I realized that the needle clamp was damaged and I found that I had the confidence to take it off and really investigate the damage.

I've had this machine for many years and recently, the tension has gone all woky. Thank you for teaching me things I never knew about this looper. Gotta go - I'm off to do some cleaning, oiling (that's never been done!) then adjusting the tension. Happy sewing y'all!

Am window shopping for a used serger. Just looked up this model and found your video. It is wonderful. I have learned a lot about the nature of sergers from you and about how users can help extend the life of their machines. Thanks!

Thanks for this. I have been pretty good about cleaning and oiling my machine since I got it 1986 but have never taken it this far. I'm glad I did. My wick and pad were dry. I remember reading the manual to oil it shortly after I first had it. All the oil points said 2-3 drops and the one above the wick said 20-30 drops. I decided it was a typo and should be 2-3 drops. So I've been giving it 2-3 drops only all these years. Poor thing. That said, I've run it hard over the years and have never had any issues. I should treat it to some new cutting blades. Thanks again.

Hi Wes, Can I just say that I've used Isopropyl Alcohol to clean as well and it's good for cleaning grease and oil, but you have to be very careful on the outside of the machine as it can dissolve/smudge the printed lettering on the dials etc. I now use just weak watered down detergent to clean the outside of the machine for this reason.

I’m so glad I found this video. Had a 5 thread quantum lock given to me that’s been sitting for years. Cleaned and lubed it up but discovered the top bushing on the needle bar was too low. There wasn’t enough clearance and it wouldn’t do a complete rotation. That’s fixed and now the upper looper horn was bent... I’m determined to get it running smoothly.

I just received this exact serger-a friend of a friend bought if off eBay 5 years ago and never did anything with it. Mine is filthy, and I'm in the process of taking it all apart so your video is most helpful! Most of the removable plastic parts on mine are broken and or cracked-I see what you mean by tightening the screws too tightly. I'm hoping to be able to order some replacement parts but haven't gone down that rabbit hole yet. Thank you again for a very helpful video!

I was always taught to thread a serger loopers first, then needles. You threaded the needles first.
@SewingMachineRepairGuy
@SewingMachineRepairGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. Nice catch! It is possible to thread the needles first, just a little more tricky as the looper thread will have to go under the needle thread. Good rule of thumb, always thread loopers first. Do as I say, not as I do, lol.

very beaut. thank you. I've upvoted and subscribed. we just got an old singer 14u12, virtually the same as the machine you've got here. It's working not too bad - we're beginners, know nothing - but it's not cutting the cloth properly at all. I guess that means it needs a new knife? doing a video on that maybe?

I just found your video! Thanks for such a good video on cleaning this machine. I loved how you showed what the correct tensions should look like (the Y's and U's). I am going to take a good look at mine. I bought this model used MANY years ago. What is the best way to secure the colored bands on the tension knobs. They are coming loose.

So this could be super helpful for me? I hope. I have a Baby Lock 428D. It was my first serger and had been stored in my sewing cabinet unused for over 10 years and when I went to use it, it appeared to be dead. one chug than nothing moving. I'm thinking now it's possible it's dry as the desert. The old serger isn't worth anything of value, but it has value to me. I'm going to at least get it open and look at it. If there is anything special about these old sergers I should know I would love some input if possible. Loving your videos. This is awesome.

Thank you so much for this video. I was given this machine. It was sewing fine and then it locked up on me. I opened up the machine and found that the needle bar assembly had a part slipping to the left and hitting against the cover that would cause the wheel to stop when the part hit the cover. I took a screwdriver to move the part to the right which worked temporarily, but when I sew, it manages to slip back to the left and jam again. Any thoughts? I would add a picture of the part but can't figure out how to attach it here.

I have this exact serger and came to this video for help with my tension as I’m having the same issue that the looper thread won’t reach across to the leftmost needle to form a fully locked stitch. How do you adjust the looper? Seems all the pieces that loop aren’t adjustable on this model. Trying to look close at what you do but it’s inscrutable. Thank you

Hi, I'd like to see a close up of how the lower looper thread is threaded. The manual mentions a hole on that bar and the thread going in the groove from left to right, but I don't see the holet and so not sure if mine is threaded correctly.

I just got a 14u44 from a garage and it seemed to be in beyond perfect condition (not a single piece of lint). Which I didn't realize until i followed your video to take it apart and clean it up. My question is the looper cover seems to be hitting the arm the operates the blade. is this just a flaw with the machine or does something need adjusting? Any help is greatly appreciated as I am struggling to find any answers on my own.

I own one of these machines. I took it apart, cleaned and oiled it, adjusted the loopers back to factory spec, gapped and alligned the loopers to the needles and eachother. needle height is correct. I'm still having a problem with the lower looper occasionally missing the left needle thread when sewing fablic. Though when fabric is not present, it grabs both needle threads and chains all threads without any problem whatsoever. The clearance gap between the lower looper and needles is a close to zero as I can possibly get it. I cannot figure out why it misses the left needle thread with fabric present. I cannot get the lower looper any closer the the needle. I alligned the far left position correctly to the needle down state, then made fractional mm adjustments to get the best results, but still have problems missing when fabric is loaded. SMRG, what do you think the likely causes are?

Why I do not use a serger, three to 6 spools of thread. Threading is a nightmare. My quantum 9960 has a overlock stitch that does a great job! Any electronic machine has an overlock stitch.

I wish I could add pictures in the comments. It's completely new, clean, and unused. I tried it out once on an inch of fabric when I first got it. And it worked like a gem. But dumb butt over here (I'm the dumb butt) had the bright idea of not storing it in its original box to save space. It's been in storage (covered so no dust) for almost 2 years. But it's been crammed with other stuff.
