Thank you. Yes, I use active carbon which helps mitigate chemical wars between corals, but not very effective in curbing water yellowing. Skimmer and filter floss are much more effective in this regard.

Thank you Mark! I heard of fan cooling used in nano tanks at an ambient temperature below 30. I'm not sure how effective is fan cooling applied to larger tanks at a higher temperature. Another consideration is water evaporation. You need to top off reservoir much more often with a fan.

@@zzyz Hi Roger, You are welcome and thank you too! I originally had a 250 gal and purchased a nice chiller for it which worked fine but not only did it take a lot of space, it also required maintenance, a lot of electricity to operate (I think more than the offset of the extra water needed through evaporation), it was always noisy and added heat into the room at a time when you really didn't want it. Time went on and things in my life changed and I downgraded from an 8' to a 5' tank. So now the chiller was too large to place under the smaller tank. I happen to be a professional refrigeration technician I knew the power of a little air over water so I decided to try a small fan instead of the Chiller. The fan I still use is a simple 4" USB mini fan connected to a small usb power supply which only takes a half amp (500ma @5v) of power. The nice thing about using a fan like this is that you can make slight changes to the direction of the air hitting the water (either on top or in the sump) in a way that throttles down or speed up the evaporation hence cooling effect. So for people like me that currently use an ATO for dosing Kalk, if I see that I need a little more PH in the water through the Kalk in the ATO I simply direct the fan a little more onto the water which in turn causes more evaporation and since I have my heater set to 77F the tank keeps that constant temp. I can also direct the fan further away from the water to slow down the evaporation and thus lower the Kalk dosing as needed. One thing for sure, you don't need much air blowing across the surface of the water to keep the tank cool. I believe the small fan like I speak of will cool a very large tank without problems if utilized correctly.

Thank you Dennis! The mandarin started to eat frozen brine shrimp in about three months' time. I trained it in the quarantine. I introduced it to the display thereafter. But it seldom caught brine shrimps during feeding due to its slow movement. It obtains its main food source from live rocks where lots of micro creatures are living.

@@dennisbell6365 My pleasure. Yes, I think so. The algae reactor will feed the pods population. But make sure you train the mandarin with brine shrimps as well to serve as the last resort in case of falling short of live food.

I have both UAS and algae reactor. But the algae reactor alone will suffice. I'm using a small brand from a Chinese manufacturer due to its cheap price. I'll recommend big names such as Kraken for better qualities.

I'll talk about flow in future updates following feeding. In a nutshell, I have two wavemakers and both are set at the lowest speed and the longest wave lengths.

I put their feet inside the rock crevices and surround them with branching live rocks to support their bodies. Hope that helps.

@@zzyz by returning something to the ocean you run a big risk of also returning pests or invasive species etc. it can destroy your local ecosystem.

Think of how many individual things from a different sources you have introduced to your system. Then pretend they each carried a bacteria/disease/algea/pest organism that was not native to the area you released the anenome. The ecosystem you affected could be very negatively impacted by your actions.

Yes, I keep at 75. Your temperatures look awesome. I wish I could live in a place much cooler. Generally, I didn't see any adverse effect for temperatures between 64 and 77.

@@zzyz most people say to keep temp above 76-79 which makes no sense ocean is cold so nice to see i don't need to pop a heater in yet because so far i've been having success at my 72-74 range

@@MrDon967 I don't think you need a heater. Btw, algae don't grow well above 77. As I culture sea lettuce, I have to keep the water cooler. Algae disappear on the coast in summer as they are afraid of hot weather.

@@zzyz i see i'll keep an eye out for my new tank that i'm gathering stuff to set up to start the 125g reef if i run into algae i'll try heater but rn in my nano reef no algae issues so far

@@MrDon967 Sorry I may not have expressed myself clearly. Sea lettuce will not grow well if the water temperature is on the high end. But warm water may not help much in getting rid of nuisance algae. Algae reactor is much more effective in case you run into algae issues in the future.

No. UV is not effective in killing either ich or dinos. Wait for the cycle to finish and quarantine well. Everything will be fine.

I find that all tank inhabitants are fine with 64-77. I keep at 75 most of the time. If you culture algae, try to keep below 77 as they prefer cool water.

Even though the house is air conditioned, I will still recommend a chiller for two reasons. First, you will probably not run air con 24/7 to be environmentally friendly. Second, water evaporates much faster in an air coned room, which means daily maintenance of reservoir rather than weekly.
