ForbiddenForest I hate that she can trash her room, and have somebody else clean it for her. Now she'll think it's still ok, because somebody else will clean up her mess. It's setting a horrible precedent. She needed to clean it herself. The work of doing it herself would allow her to learn not to let it get that far again. People can't clean up her messes for her. Literally and figuratively.

Tina Lionti my mum always cleaned my room for me because we were alwas busy. One day when i was like 15 my mum was like ‘why is yor room a mess, clean it’. Like i had never cleaned my room before. Thats one of the things she got wrong with parenting. Im still a messy person. And i dont think its ever gonna go away. I find it really difficult to keep on top of, it is slowly getting better but i dont think i will ever be the same as someone who was taught to clean up after themselves from a young age.

Not necessarily- look I deal with my messy room and my mom yells at me a lot to get it clean and trust me- my mom is in no way lazy it is just me (I am getting better at it but I still struggle with it) this is very extreme situation but I've faced similar and it isn't the parents fault it's the kid.

Never would have happened in my mother’s house. We had to make our bed when our feet hit the floor in the morning, we had to put everything back in its place 15 minutes before bed time and each of us was responsible for an area of the house outside of our personal bedrooms. I had the living room, my older sister kept the bathrooms clean and my brothers were responsible for the recreation room and shared yard work and repairs with my father and my mother kept the dining room and kitchen. I love folding and organizing so I did the Linen closet periodically.

You forget that some people who have messy houses or rooms are likely triggered by a mental illness? Some people are just afraid of throwing anything out as it gives them a sign of comfort. It's not easy for everyone to keep a place spotless. Not everyone is tidy. These types of people need help before tackling a hoarding issue. If you tackle the hoarding issue before the source of the problem, it will bring them into a state of shock and they will become very defensive.

L. A. McDonough It is easy to judge others. I had a daughter who behaved like this no matter what we did. She saw her parents care for disabled and sick Grandparents for many years. She saw her infant brother diagnosed with a life threatening illness and when she was 16 she was diagnosed with the same illness. She is brilliant and graduated college with honors. Now she is married and keeps her house neat and tidy. She also values love, faith and family so in the end a messy room wasn't that important.

+Sherry Wyllie I am "grown" and battled a severe bout of depression for 2-3 years after a few personal tragedies. My type A personality became type idc. I have been decluttering for 6 months and I'm feeling more at peace. (Also going thru a divorce and trying to rid the ghost of husband past out which can lead right back to depression) I am not a hoarder, but I can go into a shell and just not handle things that are important like the mail etc if I don't push myself. I'm a room mom for my kids school, volunteer at every event, used to use my label maker daily, yet depression was/is the source. I never saw it coming. My daughter helped me see the change in me. Terrifying.

I dont know why the mom wasnt able to sort this small issue out. Together they should have had the throw out bits done in an hour. Nice clothes in the closet, not rocket science to figure out decent clothes hangers for your clothes. I tell my daughter pick up what you want to keep, anything I find on the floor I throw out. Let me know your ready for me to come in. I do have what she needs for storage available and over the years I have tossed her many many teddies, books, little girl clutter as it's too much clutter. Kept the very best of the nIce stuff. Typically dont tell her because she wouldnt do it herself and she likely to hiss I got on with it. I dont toss specail items that granma gave her etc. Never had her fly off at me.

I asked someone in my barracks what was the worst room they’ve seen. There was a marine who had a room to himself… never showered… bed sheets had a giant gray stain in the center… A pile of clothes in the center of the room.. that had TWENTY FIVE DEAD MICE UNDERNEATH. The barracks next door had a mice infestation and was demolished, so the mice came to his barracks.
