My grandpa passed in October of 2020. I am unbelievably grateful to the morticians who worked on him and worked with our family. He had an open-casket funeral and looked like he was asleep, so much so I wanted to jump in the casket and shake him awake. He was buried in his favorite shirt, blue jeans, and his favorite cowboy boots. He had his reading glasses in his shirt pocket, his favorite cowboy hat on his chest, and his dog's (who had died a month or so before him) cremains at his feet in the casket. He had a wonderful veteran service and I'll never forget it. God bless Frank and all those who work with the dead and the grieving families.

It's interesting hearing all the details from this mortician as a Muslim because as part of our religion we don't do any embalming or cosmetics after death. Once dead, the body is washed in a particular way by the closest family members of the same sex as soon as possible and the deceased is buried in a plain pine coffin, generally and ideally within 24 hours. All of the funeral ceremony and viewing is basically combined into one ceremony where the family and friends do a prayer, view the body and then the body is taken directly to the graveyard. Tbh I'm not exactly sure why there's no embalming other than so the body can decompose naturally and go back into the earth over the time. As the funerals and viewings are done within 24hrs there really isn't any need for keeping the body viable for viewings for several days or even a week or more - which I've seen happen in several funerals for various types of Christians and a reformed Jewish family as well ... Very interesting stuff for some reason lol

@@MoAli-wm4of it used to be the same way here in the US but the death industry has taken over. I believe that's why people in the West view death in such a taboo way. We are no longer close to it. Back in the day the family would wash the body, have the service in their home (this was what the living room used to be used for) then they would be buried in a simple pine box.

2:06:47 The baby story 😢 Theo handled this so well; no jokes. When it comes to the tiniest most helpless it's very serious 💔 Thank you for sharing this very difficult story 😢 I'll never forget when I had a c-section, my 1st and only baby and was up walking around as soon as possible and I noticed a specific wing decorated with butterflies above and around the doors. I finally asked a nurse very quietly why there were doors with butterflies and signs to be very quiet... she softly told me, "Those rooms are for mothers who have just lost a baby or the baby is dying." I didn't say a word as tears poured out of my eyes and down my cheeks... the nurse grabbed a tissue out of her pocket wiped my cheeks and quietly said, "Good job walking; go love on your healthy baby." ❤😢❤ My heart was so very heavy. I made sure to explain to my husband what the butterflies and quiet signs were for. Bless all the mothers who've lost a baby; I'm so sorry 💔😢

We are in a small town and im so grateful for our local funeral director. Im the person in our family that takes care of most of the famiy business. Like arrangements, calls, just whatever is needed. So i rarely get the chance to see our loved ones to grieve. So the family that owns the local funeral home lets me go after hours, has let me help wash and care for my people. Ive done their nails, hair, help dress them... Usually just get to spend quiet time to say good by. But if not for that, the first couple funerals were a whirlwind of ppl coming in, having to tell the story over and over, feed ppl, help find pictures, music ,etc.... 😢 So thx guys! If you ever see this!

1:02:32 When I was in high school, a career test said my personality fits to be a mortician or funeral director. I’ve always thought, “man…my personality must be STRANGE if that’s the career choice I should follow”. I didn’t go into the industry. BUT it finally hit me of why I perhaps got mortician/funeral director. When he said “I’m their rock. I’ll handle it. I’ll take care of things”…I’m that person in my family. You need something taken care of, call me. I’ll handle it. Or I’m just strange 🤷🏻‍♀️

Real talk Theo, talking to people like this is important not only to help with public perception of industries like these, but to help break down the taboo of death in general. There were a few questions that made me recoil, especially when the subject of dead children was broached.. but I think that talking to people like these on popular podcasts such as yours is very important to tearing down taboos and ultimately making death and such less wierd and uncomfortable on top of grieving.. you know?
